We booked this hotel for a short family trip last week because it was on the beach, had several pools and activities for the kids such as bowling, arcade, etc. I am by no means picky and I know we take chances when staying at these saturated commercial family beach locations and not staying in name brand hotels so I am use to not staying in a five star resort and its generally fine. I also take reviews with a grain of salt because I know some people are just hard to please or like to complain about every little thing so I read the good and the bad and consider the things that will make a difference to me.

I was immediately turned off when we parked in the garage and I saw that there were rooms basically right in the garage almost but hey, "hopefully we wont get one of those rooms". Although the lobby was decent, and the staff was very friendly and helpful, I should have taken a clue when the stall in the lobby bathroom had a broken/missing lock. If they couldn't even fix that then who knows what else they don't take care of. The hallways are grimy and I felt like I really didn't want to touch anything. They need to be power-washed and painted. The doors to the rooms need to be cleaned and painted. Some of them look like they have dirty finger prints by the locks like someone was trying to break-in or like the police had "dusted" them to locate the culprit.

We had an ocean view room on the 9th floor which appeared generally clean but the headboard was caked with dust and there were at least 2 cigarette butts on the balcony, although it was a non-smoking room. If I am paying for an ocean view room, part of that experience is having the balcony so when you clean the room you should be cleaning the balcony too. The safe in the room was missing a few batteries so did not work. We did call the front desk and they immediately sent someone up to "fix" the safe by adding batteries and putting tape over them. Followed by housekeeping who came to wipe the headboards and pick up the cigarette butts. The bathroom was very small.

We went to the pool for a little while which was not crowded at that time in the early evening and seemed ok. No real complaints. But once heading back into the room I just felt generally sceeved out walking through the halls. I noticed a huge amount of caked on dust on one of the fire sprinkler wheels which was just gross. All housekeeping needs to do is pass a duster over it daily...simple. What they say about the elevators is true. One was not working and the other two were slow; someone even said it took her to the wrong floor and it made an announcement that it was having "technical difficulties".

We really tried but after dinner we returned and just really couldn't stay there. I was concerned that if they do not do proper maintenance and cleaning of what I can see, what about what I cant see like the beds. I just couldn't sleep there. I was embarrassed since I had picked the hotel and then had my dad make the reservation so I felt bad that this was where I suggested that we stay. Me and the kids did go to the bowling alley which was fine while my dad went to the front desk and requested that they move us to one of their sister properties, the Landmark, where he had stayed recently which they accomodated and we were able to move that night...and the Landmark was actually less money. While we were waiting for the elevator to leave I saw a roach crawling down the hallway wall. I am so glad I did not have to sleep there and we got to start our vacation fresh elsewhere. The staff did also provide us with vouchers for the restaurants and the arcade so we did return the next day, reluctantly, just to use the arcade which was fine (except none of the stalls in the bathroom had any toilet paper or paper towels). We did notice them really cleaning the tops of the arcade machines. Too bad they do not take that much care with the rest of the place.

Because of the bowling alley, bar, arcade, activities, location, and front desk staff, it has the potential to be a really nice place for families if they just took all that money they are making and put some real care into proper housekeeping and regular maintenance. I don't know what part of the hotel that those reviewers on here who give such great reviews stayed in but it must be a whole different world because there is no way they are reviewing the same hotel that I stayed at.

Disappointed

We can here as a family trip. We had five rooms. We had to change four out of the five rooms due to the horrible conditions of the room. The housekeepers are rude. They called themselves changing the sheets only to replace them with blood stained sheets, comforter and pillows. You can tell the housekeeper must have had a cut and bleed on them. I called down to the front desk at 12pm. I was told they would send someone up to change them. We left our room for the day, returned at 10:30 pm, still no one came to replace the sheets, etc. I then walked down to the front desk to advise them of the situation. What a inconvenience! The balcony carpets are filthy. It seems they weren't vacuumed in years. The hallways are disgusting; walls, carpets, etc. The pool looks like it hasn't been cleaned all week. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The most pleasant staff was Brittany and Keisha who works the bar and bowling area.

Ups and Downs

We stayed during the fourth of July week. It was our "babymoon" before baby #2 comes. We got a King Ocean View room. We were pleasantly surprised when our room was ready 2 hours before check-in and we were able to get right in even though we arrived earlier than planned. The room was fine. Mostly clean but small. The sheets had what appeared to be burns from an iron in many locations. The bathroom was TINY, the lights did not work and the door did not shut. There wasn't any mold or bugs or anything. The refrigerator was cleaned well.
The hallways and common areas were a whole different story. The horror stories about the elevators are true. No certifications are displayed, they are so incredibly slow, maintenance and housekeeping uses them constantly so they are rarely available for guests and one of them made terrifying shakes and sounds if you were able to catch it. We used the stairs the whole time. The hallways were filthy and smelled so terrible. Trash and dirty linens were often tossed on the floor outside of the rooms.
The arcade was okay. We didn't use our bowling passes or try the food there. The breakfast was good. However, if you wanted a waffle you had to wait forever as there was only one waffle iron for the whole dining room and it was always a battle to get one. The waitress was nice but literally checked in every 2 minutes. We couldn't even hold a conversation because it kept being interrupted.
The pools were packed. Obviously we knew this was going to happen..it was fourth of july week. People would go out very early (we were up at 6 and it was already done) and put their stuff on the chairs then not return until 10am or so. Therefore, all of the chairs were gone by 6 or 7 in the morning. If you did this... you are arrogant and rude. The security guard was far more concerned with drinking whatever it is he had then actually securing the pool. The lazy river was taken over by rude kids with parents who do not pay attention to them at all. They didn't use floats, cannon balled into the pool directly next to people who were trying to float (you know..the whole point of a lazy river), intentionally splashing strangers or pushing you out of the way, etc. The security guard said nothing. We left.
Finally, on the night of the third of july, there were groups of people setting off fireworks on the beach directly in front of the hotel starting around 11:30pm. There are so many issues with this; it is late and people are trying to sleep, fireworks are actually ILLEGAL within the city confines of Myrtle Beach and finally, the noise ordinance for Myrtle Beach goes into effect at 11:00pm. We figured that they couldn't possibly go on that long and tried to wait it out. Just before 2:00AM I called the front desk because the fireworks were still relentless. They informed me that yes, they were in violation of the noise ordinance and yes, it was illegal. However, they were not willing to send a security guard out (a group was about 20 feet in front of the hotel building) and they were not willing to call the police. That's just lazy. You know that your guests cannot sleep. You know and admit it is illegal. You know it is unsafe and putting your hotel at risk and you won't call the police. Lazy. I ended up asking them for the non emergency number and calling the police myself. Thank you to the cops who showed up about 30 minutes later and chased all of the violators off the beach so we could get some rest. It finally ended around 2:30am.
We checked out the next morning before 7am. We had decided to check out early because this crappy experience was just not worth being away from our toddler and it was just a miserable "getaway" experience. Originally the front desk tried not refunding me the money I was owed. I had to remind them that I paid extra for the "Vacation Interruption Plan" and wait for it to be sorted out. The money was refunded several days later.
Ultimately, I don't think we will be returning. We would try and find somewhere else. It is a shame. If they cared more about their guests, enforced their own rules and cleaned up the common areas better then it could be a nice place.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY

We stayed here for a week! Housekeeping never came to our room, we had to call to get new towels. We couldn't enjoy sitting on our balcony because people below us wanted to smoke pot constantly. We saw roaches in the hallways and around the pool area. Parking was a mess because they don't have enough parking spaces in the parking deck. A trash bin was set outside the door of our room so we constantly had to smell that. We had breakfast one day and it was not worth the money. The only good part is a handful of the employees were helpful and nice. The arcade is very small and the list could go on.

Annual Family Myrtle Trip

Amazing as always! We have been coming to Myrtle Beach for the week of the 4th for 3 years now and we always choose Captains Quarters. Our oceanfront suite was very clean and stocked with everything we needed in the kitchen to cook our meals. The beds were quite comfortable and the bedding was very soft and comfy. The pool area and water park area is always our favorite spot for sunny days. With a nice clean pool deck and lots of lounge chairs to choose from for enjoying the rays. There were tons of kids activities each day and the pool DJ was great as well. We had a great time playing in the Level 6 arcade on the rainy Monday and lots of laughs during our bowing game. Our 10 year old loves the Friday night Pool Glow Party and we really enjoyed the poolside Polynesian Fire show on Friday night. We loved our stay and are already planning next years trip and it will most definitely be at Captains Quarters.
