A basic hotel in the city

The front desk looked ok whereas the room only equipped with basic furniture with wifi and hairdryer. There is no curtain in the bathroom and no drainage for the water. Eventually the bathroom was full of water. There wasn't any curtain fixed in the room despite hooks were there. Not sure why the curtain in the room was taken away and the room was too bright in the morning! Nonetheless, it's about 10-15min walk from the hotel to the old city Promenade des Anglais and the beach.
An oasis in the centre of Nice

We stayed one night in this hotel which is in a quiet leafy street close to the Massena square and shopping area in Nice.
The hotel is ideally placed as it's close to the city, shopping, restaurants and bars as well as the beach. It's also close to the tramline to the railway station and the airport shuttle bus that runs along the Promenade des Anglais.
We booked a double ensuite room through a late booking website.
We had an excellent welcome from the Reception Manager. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. Our French is not the best but the staff took that in their stride and it was obvious that they spoke or understood other languages.
The reception area is light and airy and the breakfast room is just behind it.
There are about six steps to get up to the hotel and I'm not sure if there was any access for those unable to manage stairs. Inside there is a small lift.
Our room was on the first floor at the front. At the moment there is some underground work going on in connection with the new tramline. There wasn't any noise from this but once it's finished in a year or so that will probably change. The room was clean and airy and had a separate w.c. and shower room. There was ample storage for clothes and suitcases etc. We had wifi in our room.
The hotel is an oasis in the centre of Nice.

We booket the hotel through hotels.com, and the room dosen't look anything like the pictures.
The beds are good. The location is great! 5 min. walk to the beach. Lots of restaurants nearby.
The wifi is really bad!
Great location and great stay

My friend and I stayed in The Carlton while travelling to Nice for the carnival. The hotel is situated in a great location for access to the centre, train station, buses to the airport, promenades and vieux Ville. I do not understand the bad reviews from other reviewers as our room was clean and tidy, beds made with crisps white sheets, clean towels hooked up in the bathroom as well as toiletries and hand soap. All I can imagine is that some of these people have expected a 5 star stay in a 3 star hotel. The breakfast was very good and we had no problems with WiFi access. The price we paid was very good value for money and we would definitely stay again.
Dreadful

On arrival our double room overlooking the garden was not as advertised. Due to laying of some sort of pipework in the street outside our balcony view was of 2 large red containers and masses of heavy duty pipe. The room was not prepared and when i phoned to reception the guy told me he was busy and he would bring me towels when he had a chance. I immediately went down to find him fiddling on the computer. I complained about the room. It was not clean, furniture dated. had not been painted in many years. Could not get the air conditioner to work. The guy said the veranda door needs to be closed for it to work. I told him that it was and insisted he come up and look. reluctantly he did and found that the AC was not working. after several phone calls he said someone would come and fix it the next day. By this time I was ready to go....I fiddled about with the micro switch on the door and got the AC working. Following day I went looking for alternative accomodation but as it was during the Euro tournament there was nothing available. Horrible 4 nights in a truly awful hotel.
