A lovely place in a quiet village but near the amenities in Portimao, Alvor and Lagos

I wanted to find a small place with a swimming pool away from the hustle and bustle of the coast (which we were going to) from where we could do short cycle rides with my three boys aged 13,11 and 4. We found this place through a bike company called Outdoor Tours (see www.outdoortours.com) who supplied us with bikes, booked us the guest house and delivered and took away the bikes to/from the guest house. Super service.

The guest house itself is next to an old church on a hill. You have great views from a huge terrace on the first floor and it has a lovely little swimming pool. It has 5 rooms and the breakfast was provided by the charming Svetlana (I think the hired help who looks after the domestic aspects) and Maria (young daughter of the owner Jose). All of them were friendly and helpful and breakfast was simple (bread, butter, jam, cheese, ham - great coffee and tea etc). They also had three dogs which my kids (who aren't that keen on dogs) loved. Especially an old basset hound that they nicknamed Dogbo. The other two were nicknamed Skinnybo and Bigbo.

The rooms are simple but comfortable - both rooms we stayed in had en suite bathrooms.

The swimming pool was great after a hard morning's cycle.

There is a shop around the corner where you can get groceries and the all important beer and ice cream and a number of small restaurants - all of which you can walk to.We only had the chance to eat at one nearby (can't remember the name but food was great).

You can cycle down the hill to a large nature reserve which has quiet beaches (which you can see from the house). We cycled to Lagos one day and we drove to Alvor for dinner one night.

All in all we had a great stay (notwithstanding there being some minor building works going on whilst we were there).

To put it into context, after we were at this guest house, we then stayed at the Sheraton Pine Clffs in Albufera (5 stars v 1 star). This was nice and had all the usual 5 star trimmings (incuding price) but when I asked the kids which they preferred, they all agreed that they preferred "Dogbo House"!

I hope we will be able to go back there again. The kids certainly would like to.
