Stately Home; Troubled Management
Dick Bon 16/07/2014 04:54As our usual Magione accommodation was not available, we, along with friends, needed one night's accommodation in transit to other parts of Italy. We booked a room for two nights in late 2013, and in early 2014, realized that we only needed it for one night, but I was unable to contact anyone, even by phone from Canada. Our friends had booked separately, but eventually got confirmation that we were all booked, for one night only. When we contacted the manager for directions on the day of arrival, we were told that we were a day late, but when we arrived were told it was not a problem. Claudia, who manages it for her cousin, is charming, but my impression is that finances are limited. In the early evening, we wanted to have a drink before going out for dinner, and needed ice. My wife called all three phone numbers given, with no answer, so she went outside, among buildings where she felt she might find someone, but despite calling loudly for Claudia, did not find anyone. Claudia eventually appeared, explaining that she had forgotten to charge her cell phone, and did direct my wife to some ice and soft drinks, information which had not been forthcoming earlier. The pool is superficially attractive, but is greatly in need of cleaning and maintenance. We had no hot water that evening, nor the next morning at 7:00, but breakfast was good. In view of an apparent multitude of challenges, I am not sure why the place continues to operate.
Hugely disappointing....
HongKongFanon 11/07/2014 09:24We got totally lost trying to find this place first of all as the satnav sent us to a private house up a dirt track. Eventually we found it and waited patiently 5 mins for the electric gates to open and let us drive up to the house. We were met by a (teenage?0 girl who, strangely, didn't ask us our name. No problem, maybe we were the only guests.. then we were not asked to sign in or show our passports (which we understand is the law in Italy and everywhere else). Maybe that doesn't apply for this classification of accommodation. Anyway, she told us where the elevator was and so we got our bags in while she sprinted up the stairs and met us by our room. It was about 2pm so we asked about lunch after our longish drive....she recommended a nearby restaurant. Also she spent a long time telling us about access to the property and the car park. She never mentioned the hotel facilities (such as the pool) Anyway we duly went off to look for this recommended restaurant, which was closed when we got there...no problem, we ended up at a nice convent restaurant and mulled over our choice of hotel for the night over lunch. Basically this place was too remote for us. You need to drive... This was our fault as we didn't do our research very well. However what was at odds with our experience was the excellent reviews from other guests who said what a warm, welcoming place it was -completely at odds with our own experience. So we went back to the hotel and collect our bags (had to wait another 5 mins in pouring rain for the gates to open again). The girl met us on the steps and challenged us as to why we didn't use the car park entrance round the back .....- we explained that was because we were checking out. She became very stroppy and said she'd have to check with her boss. What?? I said that we understood we would probably forfeit our night's charges...but she then began to challenge our decision to move on and talk over us when we tried to explain our reasons. She told us that we would not get a refund and her boss would email us (the boss never did). She was basically arguing with us on the steps in the rain!!!! So my point is a) the customer is always right, even if they are not (if you get my drift, b) having a young girl in charge (that day at least) of a hotel like that, with her poor attitude and obviously no experience is, in my mind, not a good idea and c) the owners should put the positioning of the hotel on the website, hotels.com etc etc so people can find it.....
I am guessing that we were maybe unlucky but travellers always remember service above everything and we were very disappointed with our own experience at this place.
Gorgeous Inn in the heart of Umbria
Walsharchon 27/06/2014 04:19The Casale della Staffa is a beautiful Inn located a short distance from the highway, surrounded by 500 year old olive trees and vineyards. The views are picturesque and the grounds are lovely. The building was fully renovated a few years ago and is beautifully decorated. The inn makes a great home base for day trips to Assisi, Siena, Cortona, Perugia....so much to see and do. All the recommendations by Claudia and Ev (our charming hosts) were perfect. My family was very comfortable at the Inn and would have been perfectly happy to simply hang out there for the three days we stayed. A lovely breakfast was served every morning.
Beautiful B&B
Lizzybj11on 22/08/2013 01:30Casale Della Staffa is everything you dream about when you think of the Italian Countryside.
When we pulled up to the property and got out out of the car , It took my breathe away. The views were stunning, beautiful countryside, olive groves, grape vineyards, beautiful landscaping. A relaxing pool overlooking lovely views which we cooled off after settling in. The rooms were tastefully decorated with antique furniture, wood beam ceilings and very comfortable furnishings with beautiful views. The common areas are comfortable and relaxing. The staff is warm and friendly and go out of their way to make you feel at home. The breakfast was great which included cereals, breads, pastries, jams, meats, cheeses, eggs and hot and cold drinks. After days in crowded areas it was peaceful and serene. Thank you Claudia ,Ev
And Odetta for your warm hospitality. You were so accommodating towards our family. Your passion for customer service and hospitality certainly is apparent. My only regret is that We did not stay longer. You definitely don't want to miss this gem in the Italian countryside. It's great for families , romantic for couples, great place to get friends together or just a place to find solitude and tranquility traveling solo!!
Wouldn't have been a complete trip to Italy without staying there.
Highly recommend this B and B. It's absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!
