Jad and Angus could not have been more helpful and their relaxed approach made our stay all the more special. We really enjoyed the food and wine and the house, bedroom and grounds were everything we would hope for in a Country House Hotel.
We would certainly like to stay again.
On our second stay at Cavens we were pleased to find that nothing had changed since our previous visit. Our very capable hosts, Angus and Jane, were very welcoming and exuded an air of quiet refinement and of being totally down to earth. Our room was spacious and well appointed. The dining room is elegant and the main lounge is huge but still retains a warm coziness. An adjacent 'library' is also quiet and comfortable.
The breakfast menu is comprehensive with good alternatives to the excellent cooked breakfast (we particularly liked the black pudding). The evening meal again has a choice of menu, we particularly appreciated the scallops and the sirloin steak, all perfectly cooked and presented. The wine lists features some well known top end wines but we found the cheaper options to be very palatable indeed (recommend the Picpoule de Pinet, especially with fish). A well stocked bar offers huge choice for both pre-dinner and after-dinner drinks.
Cavens is located down a private drive from Kirkbean and has well maintained gardens featuring a huge croquet lawn. The perfect base for a relaxed holiday in this very beautiful area bordering the Solway Firth.
The house is within easy reach of some major attractions e.g. Threave House and Gardens, Threave Castle,
Caerlaverock Castle, Annan Distillery, The Devils Porridge Museum, Loch Arthur, Kirkudbright, Rockliffe walk to Kippford, Sandyhills bay and beach and many more. The roads are relatively quiet and bring back some of the forgotten pleasures of driving especially with the extensive views across country and coast - no wonder this hidden gem is known as the Scottish Riviera.
Perfect 3 night stay, with lovely rooms and ideal location for exploring the Eastern side of Dumfries and Galloway. Angus and Jane looked after us well with good food and even drying our wet gear and storing a bike. Hope to stay again sometime.
Found Cavens Country House Hotel on Booking.com and thought it looked ideal for an overnight stay while touring the area. It was a last minute booking and was quite expensive for the area, but it included dinner and breakfast and looked lovely. I called the hotel directly to ensure they could accommodate us for the following night and my lactose free dietary requirement at dinner. I clearly called at a bad time as Angus answered and was cooking at the time! I had a hurried yes to both and went ahead and booked through Booking.com. We had NO idea from either their website, or from our Booking.com confirmation, that there was complimentary afternoon tea included or that we had to be there for a specific time for dinner! This really needs to be highlighted on the website and confirmation. We could have easily been there for 4pm for tea if only we'd known.
Jane was just delightful and made us feel very welcome and gave us a choice of rooms. Somehow we should have know that we had to be there for dinner at a set time, so we seemed to be on a back foot from the outset. Angus hadn't linked my call to the booking made immediately afterwards, but despite this he did serve me a splendid lactose free dinner and breakfast - both were cooked to perfection and superb. Our room was gorgeous with a small sitting room for relaxing in and we slept very well on a huge, comfortable bed. They have a well stocked bar and the staff are terrific. I would certainly recommend this hotel but suggest that communication could be improved. Let guests know there is complimentary afternoon tea and what time you expect guests to arrive. We arrived just before 7pm and we were clearly considered "late"!!
We - a group of golfers from Switzerland - spent a memorable week at Cavens. We enjoyed every minute of it, despite the wet and windy weather. The rooms are very spacious and the various lounges invite for tea, aperitif and drinks. The fresh local food prepared by the chef is a delight. The garden is enormous and well kept. For golfers: Southerness and Powfoot are a must! We felt like home. Thank you Jane and Angus for your warm hospitality.
