What People are saying

Nice hotel in convenient location

Ruben Don 01/08/2017 15:27

Me & my family stayed at this hotel 3 nights in first week of July2017. Booked a "Standard Plus Double room" well in advance hence got a great rate & they allowed my 12yr child to stay free (no extra charges). The hotel is about 2 mins. walk from Hamburg Altona train / bus station. If arriving at Hamburg airport, you can take the S1 (s-bahn) train which goes to Altona. Although we had large size luggage, it was convenient to walk from the station to the hotel. The entrance / reception / check-in is next door at Best western Raphael Hotel. The reception staff especially Mr. Michael Jenni was very polite, welcoming and check-in was swift. He even offered to assist us with our luggage. This hotel does not have an elevator; however, you can reach upto 3rd floor using elevator at BW Raphael hotel (as both hotels are interconnected -pic attached) hence if you have heavy luggage please request for easy access to elevator while booking as we did. Our room was very spacious & clean and bathroom was spotless. The room had a Safe, fan, hair dryer & basic toiletries. A Complimentary bottle of sparkling water was also provided. The room did not have a fridge & air conditioner. Even though the room was facing train station, it was very quiet. We found the streets around this hotel and neighborhood to be safe and not dodgy or sketchy as mentioned in past reviews. We did not include breakfast while booking because the Altona station had many food outlets including McDonalds, a chinese outlet, supermarket and many others plus Mercado shopping mall next to the station had Burger King & a large food court. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here and would definitely return to this hotel again.

Good two star hotel, perfect location

Just as we expected - small room with a double bed, bathroom and cabinet.
Perfect for a vacation on the go - we used the room for sleeping before exploring the city, and this was perfect for us.
Unfortunately the Altona-station was closed due to work, but there was no more than ten minute walk to the next station.

As Advertised - but beware!

We had one night in Hamburg before our return flight the following day. We reserved here because two of us were coming by train from different destinations and this hotel is advertised as "walking distance to the train station". Beware - they are talking about the "Altoona" train station which is right across the street from the hotel. We both came into the Hamburg main central station and this hotel is a $20euro cab ride from the main central station. We were not pleased. In fact, the cab driver told us there are 4 train stations in Hamburg so you need to be very specific as to which one. Also there are 2 "Central Hotels" in Hamburg and specificity is required here also.

My room (501) was exactly as pictured above. Older, but functional and spotless. Depressing, semi-sketchy neighborhood with not a lot to see. We managed to find an Italian place up on the square that served a decent salmon pasta and had good wine, so that calmed us down a but from the frustrations of the exact location. My room faced the trains but I did not hear them it's quite soundproof.

Not my favorite experience I'm afraid. . . .whatever money we saved by booking here was eaten up by un-planned cab rides to get to it. The staff is friendly and very nice (but they work at the Best Western next door where you check in). I would not return.

Good hotel; dodgy street

We walked to the hotel from the Central train station and became more and more nervous as we went along. There were drug dealers and prostitutes everywhere. The hotel, however, is very nice once you walk through the doors. The front desk staff was helpful, but you do need to haul your own bags up the stairs and my room was on the fourth / fifth floor. Maybe because I was at the top of the building, but the room was unbearably hot with no A/C. They did bring a fan very quickly when I requested on.

The room was very clean and the breakfast was more than decent. If not for the location, I would give this hotel a much higher rating.

OK hotel with good location for Altona and Ottensen district but far from Hamburg city centre

I can't get excited about this hotel. There was nothing really wrong with it, apart from less than impeccable cleanliness in the room (particularly the toilet). The bed was comfortable and everthing worked but there was a drab atmosphere everywhere but in the breakfast rooms. That brings me to a good point of this hotel: the breakfast (various kinds of smoked salmon and other fish, cheeses and meats as well as lots of healthy bread choices and some hot options as well as the usual cereals etc). It is right next door to the Best Western and I suppose it is functionally the same hotel. I would not recommend it for travellers seeking a quiet hotel because being near the train station there is a fair amount of noise. There is no hotel restaurant but many really good restaurants in close walking distance. The best thing in the Altona area, once an independent city, is the Ottensen district about 10 minutes away on foot. Built by the Danes more than 200 years ago it is a charming area with lovely shops and places to eat. If you have business in central Hamburg, I wouldn't recommend staying in Altona unless there are no rooms left. It takes about 15 minutes by metro to central Hamburg. However, the docks and other interesting sights are on the Altona-side of Hamburg (as is the Reeperbahn red-light district).
