What People are saying

Good Value, Well Located

ClaireMMT on 12/11/2017 10:17

We went on a Brittany Ferries short break with my parents. It was extremely good value. The hotel was lovely - the staff pleasant, rooms comfortable and well appointed and the gardens beautiful (black and white swans and various ducks and geese - lovely) even in November. Because we were only there for 3 days, we didn’t chance the restaurant - the menu wasn’t inspiring and the reviews were poor, but the hotel was an €8 taxi from town so we ate in fabulous restaurants every evening. It is an easy walk but the weather wasn’t good.

Hotel breakfast was excellent. Fresh oranges for juicing, fabulous bread, cooked options (tip: crisp up the bacon on the pancake grill!!)

We avoided the mini-bar (expensive) and were a little surprised by the €10 per room city tax on departure, but that was our ignorance and not the hotel’s fault.

Would definitely go again. Lovely stay.

Disappointing, a wasted opportunity

Oh dear, where to start. Our room, in an outbuilding, was cold and the heating did not work. The accommodation was laid out on 2 floors and the staircase between the two was slippery wooden open steps with wire sides - I would not consider this room with small children. The door at the back opened on to a sad terrace with dead plants and fallen over pots. A railway line was not far away.
The garden in front of the 'chateau' was a sad sight. Poorly maintained with the grass needed cutting and the flower beds were full of weeds. From the dining room the garden at the back looked no better.
The decoration was tired. So much more could have been made of the building.
Dinner was the worst meal we ate in France. Altogether a disappointing experience with mediocre service.

They need a decent chef

We stayed here for three nights booked on a bed and breakfast rate through Britany Ferries. The Chateau is lovely and situated conveniently for the Tapestry Museum in Bayeux and visiting Historic Normandy beaches and war cemeteries. It's location on the outskirts is in a quiet location and the grounds have the added charm of black swans on the moat. The interior of the building has a lovely country house atmosphere enhanced by the roaring fire in the main reception room along with very interesting artwork of the local artist Epuisse. Our top floor room was charming with a vaulted ceiling and exposed beams. However, to our great disappointment the meal we had there on our first night was about the worst meal we have ever had in France. The surroundings and atmosphere were so good we expected good French cuisine to match. I was shocked to be served a Boeuf Bourginonne which was dry, over salted and so over cooked it was tasteless. Also my husbands chicken dish was rubbery meat in a grey glutinous sauce. We were asked to order dessert at the start of the meal and we both opted for cheese as we were in the home og Cammembert and Liberot. I remarked to the waiter waiter 'ordering at the start of the meal gives you time to get the cheese up to room temperature before serving'. Imagine the shock at being served a plate of three wedges of fridge cold tasteless poor quality cheeses. This is a lovely hotel but they reall need to sort out their food. The next night we took a taki to town and enjoyed an excellent meal thanks to checking out ratings for restraunts in Bayeux in Trip Advisor.

First Time in Normandy

pfsheahen on 21/09/2017 07:53

My wife and I took a 2 day trip to Normandy from U.K. We picked Bayeux based on its history and charm. We took the train from London to Paris and then again to Normandy. The Chateau de Bellafontaine (CDB) was about .5 miles from the train and convenient. It is just outside of the town proper which gives it a sense of the country with beautiful grounds. Swans are graceful; even black swans there. Everybody at the hotel was very helpful. It was just right for a quick trip to get an experience in Normandy we like walking and found the 15 minute walk into town just fine. I would stay at the CDB again if we come back to Bayeux. Bayeux is worth the return trip !!!!

Very nice

Stayed here after a disaster booking elsewhere that we had to leave last minute. It was a really nice stay, friendly staff and good food. Lots of people mention the slow dinner service and I have to say that was our experience also, however we only had one evening meal there. The food was really good quality but as there was only one person serving a roomful with food and drinks it did take an age to get anything. Breakfast was good too with a wide choice and good coffee. The grounds were nice to sit in and have a bottle although the black swans got a little feisty once and chased my wife and daughter around.

The rooms were nice (we stayed in the old stables not the main house)
