What People are saying

Nice amenities, relaxing pool

Marie-Claire Son 19/08/2017 22:40

The Chandrika is a locally owned hotel located 40 minutes away from Yala National Park. It offers a very good nighttime buffet, with a grilled meat and seafood stations and the other a deep frying station. The buffet dishes range across tastes and ethnic flavours. When we were there, red rice was available, which I absolutely loved, as well as a wide array of vegetable-based dishes. The restaurant staff was exceptionally friendly.
The breakfast buffet only features instant coffee (gasp). I don't know why, as just having a pot or two would not represent too much more work.
The pool offers a refreshing break from the safari.
Our room was spacious and very clean. Not sure if the staff could do something about the pigeons on the roof and near the balcony. If they bother you, you should specify that you want a unit on the first level.
Although our stay was quite pleasant, the few days that followed it were less so. As we checked out in the morning, the person taking payment made a huge mistake while inputting the amount on my credit card. I noticed the mistake in the evening and spent a stressful three hours trying to contact everyone to right the matter. My card was eventually refunded, but that took 4 business days. Although I believe it was an honest mistake, staff should be trained to be extra careful and show the amount on the credit card device before offering it to the customer for PIN entry.

Excellent place to stay

Stayed in this hotel for a couple of days. Facilities are good, nice rooms and excellent buffets for breakfast and dinner. Especially the personnel is very friendly. My wife required some medical attention. The hotel manager was involved and within one hour a doctor was in our room and one hour later the medication was delivered. Excellent performance which was highly appreciated by us and a good example of the care for the guests that is provided.

Well finished, good pool and bar, handy for Yalla sanctuary

If you've been on the road and missing a bathroom to revive, check in here - my room had a triangular whirlpool bath complete with seat, plus a shower, a huge sink, lovely loo and lots of daylight and ventilation thanks to openable shutters. Food is okay (I was probably put off by the institutional package tour feel to dining room), but bedrooms are very high spec. and the pool is lovely, placed at the end of a double file of palms that made me think of Tracey Island - a few beers and I heard Thunderbirds 1 and 2 launch.. Feels like a sanctuary, which goes with why you are probably there - the safari jeeps will come to collect you any time you want to go to the animals about 25 minutes away. Watch out for the mini-bar pricing - you're better off going to the well appointed bar as the prices for the stuff in the fridge were wildly unpredictable!

Lovely hotel, but disappointing food

Lovely clean rooms and comfortable beds with plenty of space and cute little balconies. Huge Bathrooms come with a luxurious corner bath. Big pool. About an hour from the national park, jeeps parked up outside to take you on safaris.
Problem is with the food and dinner as it feels too much like a production chain - prepare to have your plate taken before you have finished eating. Plenty of choices to eat but the majority of the food is very plain and only a few gems, should focus on cooking less options better.

Would stay again but eat out

Ideal and recommended stopover for Yala National Park

This is a busy but very well run hotel. Most guests seem to stay one or two nights as it is a great base for taking a safari in Yala National Park whilst touring Sri Lanka. We arrived around noon so didn't expect our room to be ready so early. We sat down for drinks at the lovely bar in the garden and to our surprise the receptionist found us within 10 minutes and said the room was ready for us. Excellent customer service! The room was spacious and clean with modern furnishings. The surrounding gardens were pretty and well tended and we enjoyed using the small pool for a quick swim. Buffet and a la carte meals are available. We tried the buffet for dinner, everything was fresh and plenty of choice. As we were taking an early morning safari next day the hotel was happy to arrange a packed breakfast which was waiting for us with the night porter at 5am. We just stayed for one night before moving onto Galle but could have happily stayed longer.
