Good Location

We stayed here our last night in Ireland and picked the location as it was between city center and the airport and the price was good. We had a double room and opted for no breakfast. We got there at 1pm and hoped we could get the room before the check-in time of 2pm but were told it was still being cleaned. The room was small and a bit cramped (expected) but had lovely red accents and was clean, same as the bathroom. Sitting area across from reception is very beautiful and seems cozy, though we did not take advantage of it. Parking is included and in an enclosed back lot accessed via a small alley (make a right turn on Rathdown Rd and then a first left). It was precisely what we needed as we ended up just sleeping/packing and being on our way.

Not for elderly or handicapped

5 of us stayed here recently for 4 nights. We had looked at the site online and thought it looked nice, clean and close enough to town that we'd be able to get to the things we wanted to do. And the price was definitely the deciding factor compared to in town prices. What we didn't know was there is no ramp and no elevator and so for people who are older or have walking issues (all of which apply to us), it was a nightmare. There are 17 steps up to the front door ... and if you are parking in the car park, they may just bring you in through the laundry room (I kid you not!) which is narrow and also has steps leading from it through the building and up to reception. Depending on where your room is (ours was yet another flight up), you could walk a total of about 35 - 40 steps every time you came into the building and went to your room. So if you are elderly or physically handicapped, this is not the place for you. The beds were comfortable; however having only 2 outlets in the room (both at mopboard level - one behind the dresser and one behind a chair in the corner) did not lend itself to using the blow dryer (which I had to ask for at the desk as there was none in our room). Sitting in a chair in the corner with no mirror is certainly an odd experience ... but one required since there was no placement of outlets at an easily accessible level nor near a mirror. In the bathroom, the light over the mirror did not work (it's a fluorescent light operated by a pull cord and has the "shaver" plug in next to it). Neither the light nor the shaver plug in worked. On the second day (after our first night), we did ask to have it fixed, but it was not fixed the entire time we were there. There was no towel bar in the bathroom and thus the towels were folded and placed on the top of the toilet tank. So you took a shower, got out dripping wet and walked over to the toilet to get your towels. There was old "mounting hardware" on the wall where a towelbar had obviously been removed and never replaced. The carpet in our room was very dirty with a lot of debris on it (some of it as large as a used piece of Kleenex!) when we arrived. When we returned to the hotel the next day after touring the city, the debris was still there; obviously no vacuum had been used on the room. My husband went looking for a vacuum to clean it himself but to no avail. We asked the next morning to have our room vacuumed and they did do it that day, but no day after that.

All in all, if you're looking for inexpensive and near to the city, this works, but short of that, it leaves a lot to be desired.

I stayed here with a few of the boys for 2 nights and it is the perfect base. It is just what we needed whilst exploring the city bars and clubs. I would definitely stay here again and the staff were fab. thank you so much

The best things about Charleville is the proximity to Dublin Central and the price.

I stayed in a single room. The room only had one small window to open for air but had to have the blind down over it to stop the security light shining straight on my face. I was also serenaded by a neighbour nightly for a couple of hours. The room was very small, but I expected it to be. The bathroom tiles could do with some repair.

The staff were friendly and welcoming.

The overall quirky nature was amusing.

Impressed with the size of the room and the bed was very comfortable. I and my partner both managed to get two consecutive good nights sleep! However, there were exposed plaster and curious large, dark marks on one wall. The window did not close properly because one handle was broken and just spun round.

We had to put the kettle on the floor (to boil water) because there were no power sockets located near enough to the beverage table.

The shower did not work properly and made a horrendous noise when we tried to switch it on. We did manage to get water coming out of the side of the shower head and trickling out of the base, but we gave up because the inside of the bath beneath the shower was peeling from the effects of being painted with vinyl paint, and had a large rusty stain where one of the taps was constantly dripping (See photos)!

We decided that it was safer to resort to standing up washes over the badly neglected vanity wash basin, (See photos, again).

In the bathroom, the window was completely devoid of a handle, and what is so surprising is that the lack of a fixing was so obvious to customers! The bathroom door handle was broken and hanging off on both sides and the door itself...well (See more photos)!

We were only in Dublin for three days, so we laughed all this off and decided that the most important thing was a good nights sleep!

It's a shame because the staff was very pleasant and the Lodge is situated in a great location, with good transport access (Bus 46A) to the main strip (O'Connell Street).

We advised the receptionist of the shortcomings and she informed us that she would record our misgivings and pass them on appropriately!
