A Real Mixed Bag...

It took us several hours to find the Chateaux, which did not make for a great beginning:

First, you will need a GPS to even find the village of Planguenoual; especially in the dark.

Second, few of the locals even know where the village or the hotel is...roughly 3 out of 10 even pointed us in the right direction.

Third, any sign you may see...and they are small and only begin to appear when you are in close vicinity...will say "Domaine du Val", not Chateaux du Val.

We got there very late and insisted that we be escorted to our room and be shown where to park the car...the grounds were unlit, the room signs impossible to see and we would have just left the car in the driveway otherwise!

The room was nice, homey and large. The TV was unplugged, the WiFi was down and the bathroom window did not close correctly and blew in the wind. The stairs up are steep and unlit at night.

The grounds need real attention, the oafish sculptures should be replaced, and the pool had a broken table top thrown in it...

The lawn furniture was a mismatched set of "western US wagon wheel", cheap chinese plastic and mid-century aluminum...with ashtrays everywhere...yuk!

The breakfast was bountiful, the homemade preserves like rhubarb were great and the breakfast staff pleasant and efficient.

The area, in the light of day, is beautiful and the ocean is nearby.

Nothing here an investment of a few million couldn't cure...

Will always attract mixed reviews.

Like most 'character' hotels, the Chateau du Val will always attract Marmite-like reviews. It is not a Holiday Inn ! Expect a lovely old complex ( that really does look like the photos ), tucked away off the beaten track in tranquil surroundings. But don't be surprised by creaky floors, sticking doors and a somewhat faded glories feel to the interior. Like some others, I felt the evening meal was not the greatest value and we only ate in once in 4 nights. Tips : do take the walk through the grounds to the sea and sample the fresh seafood at the beach café; do continue along the coastal trail in both directions - the views are worth the effort.

Passed a fabulous new year's eve here

Absolutely wonderful food. Each table was cooked for individually rather than the kitchen just cooking 60 dishes of the same and then serving them when required. About 9 courses altogether including drinks and sorbets and all the courses were full sized rather than just tasters. Very nice and will return.

Fantastic overnight stay

Chateaux du Val is set in beautiful gardens, and truly gives an 'old chateaux' feel. We stayed in a clean and quite large room, decorated in period style with beautiful old furniture and a tapestry on the wall, a large and clean bathroom and stunning views of the grounds. We had a drink in the garden when we arrived and also had our evening meal there, which was on the pricey side perhaps, but a wonderful meal. A great stay, and dog-friendly is that is important to you. The staff were very helpful and English-speaking.

What a place to stay!

We spent two nights in this fabulous Chateaux. There was so much space. Beautiful Chandeliers in the restaurant and many other rooms. All wonderfully clean as well. We arrived early to a very welcome reception. Arrangements were made for us to have lunch in our own little private dining room. We were attended by a very friendly and helpful waiter. The food was superb and we were unhurried. As my Husband and I have difficulty walking up and down stairs the Manager decided to give us a room just a flight up from the restaurant.
Well, what a room! It was huge and very, very clean. The window overlooked the front gardens. The room consisted of a large table with two high backed chairs. Two gigantic leather armchairs and the largest marble coffee table I have ever seen. The bed was beautiful. It had a pleated satin canopy over it. Also it was very comfortable and the linen was clean and fresh.
The bathroom was in keeping with the whole room. A wash basin for each of us. Everywhere in the bathroom and toilet was fitted out with those small really old thick tiles of different designs, which added to the atmosphere of the whole bathroom. Then of course was the hydrotherapie Bagnoire. How refreshing was that?
Breakfast was varied and filling and the buffet was kept topped up at all times. I cannot stand a buffet that is half empty. A very kind lady met us the first morning and explained where everything was and that we were to just help ourselves.
The deal that we had, included a meal of 4 plats. As we had eaten a large lunch we asked if we could have lunch on the Sunday instead. There was no problem with this and the Manager duly arranged it. Unfortunately, Sunday lunch I was not feeling so well and once again they happily changed the plans. we eventually had a beautiful lunch before we left on the Monday afternoon. Having spent the morning sitting in the sun in the gardens. There is a path from the gardens through the woods straight down to the beach. Apparently it takes about 15 minutes.
If you would like an enjoyable and peaceful place to stay in lovely surroundings with really friendly and helpful staff. This is the place for you!
