Last-Minute Booking

My wife and I made a last-minute booking here (based on Trip Advisor) after a very long day's drive dealing with family issues in South Dakota (!). On arrival, we found a perfectly well-kept inn, with inkeepers very willing and able to accommodate our late arrival, need for dinner, need for early morning start, etc. The place is beautiful, the innkeeper(s) are pleasant and interesting people, my only regret is that we didn't call ahead and reserve a dinner table..... Physical facility is attractive AND interesting from an historical point of view, 'local' restaurant for dinner (not at inn - we called too late) was full of 'local color'. No complaints, but certainly not of the level available from Chef Monika at the inn (with advance notice!). Highly recommended on all levels!
Worth it for the food alone!

Just returned from a weekend stay at the Chestnut Street Inn. On a cold fall day it was a nice get-away from kids and a good chance to spend some time with my wife. Jeff and Monika were genuine and very accommodating. I left our time together at the Chestnut Street Inn with great memories of the food that was served and we managed to get some dessert to go as well. Delicious!
Warning: All Other B&Bs Will Be a Letdown

I brought my 91 yr-old mother here about 18 days after Dad died, following years of dementia. We were to stay 2 nights and mom loved it so much, we stayed a 3rd when chance had it our suite would be vacant, anyway. Mom and Dad have stayed at many B&Bs and she is the one who declared that it's no use to visit others now because "they'd be a letdown." So many other B&Bs focus on their precious antique furniture that as a guest, she and Dad didn't feel very comfortable just lounging in the common areas. Here? Super cozy and inviting large parlor where she camped out most of her time, rejuvenating herself while pouring over Chef Monika's myriad cookbooks.
Ok, let's talk about the food, which many others already have. It's all true. We weren't disappointed in anything. I had to stop myself from moaning out loud through every meal (What can I say? I'm Greek. We're verbal.) Fresh! Nutritious! Absolutely Delicious! I've had B&B breakfasts and they've been mostly good, but when an actual certified chef who's studied in France and Morocco prepares your meal, you're going to see that those other breakfasts were child's play.
We also dined in one night to enjoy the Greek-themed 4-course meal and I mean to tell you - it's worth every dollar. Monika changed up the spanakopita a little, which I like, adding a few things that aren't in a "traditional" spinach pie. Each course was amazing in its own right and we finished off with her baklava, which I like even better than my own. (Mom remained loyal to blood, saying mine is better. She's lying through her delicious baklava-encrusted teeth.) Jeff's contribution to your tastebuds is delicious coffee, locally-sourced in various roasts. He'll make you coffee any time you want.
My online search chose this inn because I was looking for a place where Mom and I could have separate bedrooms, another plus of Chestnut Street Inn. The Green Room is the perfect suite of rooms for parents traveling with one child (12 and older) or a couple with a friend, or just two non-romantic people like Mom and me. Its own apartment with three rooms, one is a sitting porch (enclosed) with a small table for dining, where Mom and I watched a movie one night. Both entrances to our apartment can be locked so absolutely no one can even walk past our bedroom doors.
I gave only 3 stars for the location because Sheffield is truly a boring town, and there isn't anything like a lake or river or woods immediately near the inn. You'd have to drive to one of the state parks like Starved Rock, etc. Princeton, IL is about 15 minutes away and will satisfy people who want to go antiquing and window-shopping.
Monika and Jeff are very warm, down-to-earth, jovially friendly hosts. They will sit and chat with you as much as you like - or they'll leave you alone when they get that vibe from you. I asked Jeff if he could prepare a fire in the outdoor pit one night and he did, joining me and a young couple. We enjoyed the cool October evening, pitch black skies dotted with brilliant stars, a cozy fire, and comfortable conversation. I think Monika was in their apartment singing Celine Dion songs into her hairbrush. (She's a Celine freak - I mean fan - but she's absolutely harmless. And adorable. And very talented.)
I have no reservations telling you to book a room. Or maybe you shouldn't because you won't ever visit any other B&Bs again.
Wonderful place for our wedding party

We booked the Inn for our wedding that was in the area. We had the house to ourselves for the weekend. The breakfasts were delicious and the Innkeepers were more than accommodating. Look forward to visiting again.
Fabulous dead relative tour

While touring my Father's family heritage, we ended our trip with a wonderful stay at The Chestnut Street Inn. Jeff and Monika are wonderful, available and delightful when desired, invisible when not. The Inn itself is lovely. Beautiful rooms, quiet location, and a lot of thought went into functionality. The food was simply amazing! Chestnut Street Inn will now be the family "go-to" location when returning to the old stomping grounds.
