What People are saying

Great location. Terrible hospitality

simesonas on 27/09/2017 19:31

The location and environment of this hotel is amazing. We attended a wedding here. Unfortunately the owner is not hospitable and created issues that were not necessary during the wedding or to the guests who stayed at the hotel. Hotel rooms definitely need to be upgraded. Breakfast in the morning definitely not worth the price of 18 euro and if you don't show up on time....the room was locked up...not even a coffee ...unless you argued...which we did !!! Unfortunate experience and terrible service and hospitality which was unfortunate. Additionally we were charged extra for dirty towels and a broken wine glass at a wedding. Ridiculous!,,,

A mixed bag but still worth a visit

A place with huge potential but severely lacking on a few points. I stayed here with my wife for one night in September. We arrived at around 1.30pm to discover that reception doesn't appear to open until 3pm, we discovered this when looking for some staff to see if we could check-in and a gentleman shouted from his car to come back at 3pm! A quick trip back into brantome and back again we were this time met with a very friendly receptionist.

Check in was quick and easy and we were shown to our room personally. There is no lift so if you have any mobility issue try to make sure you get in a room on one of the lower floors.

The decor of the place is interesting, from the outside the chateau is beautiful and set in some lovely grounds. We thought the bar and dining rooms were nice old worldy French and quite quirky but as you walk up through the corridors to the rooms and in the rooms themselves it is very very dated. In fact, my wife commented that it reminded her of her Catholic high school!

The room was in particular very dated and looked like a room in a dated 3 star hotel in Blackpool. The bed wasn't particularly comfortable and every time our next door neighbours turned the tap on we could hear the pipes going.

We had booked in for dinner which again was a bit of a mixed bag! Service was very friendly and prompt throughout and we opted for the 3 course set menu. The omlette was pretty average but my wifes starter was enjoyable, both of our steaks were cooked perfectly and were very enjoyable but my wifes walnut cake for dessert was really dry.

Breakfast was fairly standard and in another one of the more dated rooms.

As you can hopefully see from the review, the stay was full of a mix of highs and lows but we still enjoyed the stay given it was only for one night and I would say its probably worth a visit but not for any longer!

I think this place really could be spectacular with a bit of investment and a good interior designer!

Avoid if you can.

On arrival we were advised the restaurant was closed on Mondays. A nearby restaurant was recommended . Do I need a booking I asked. No should be ok I was advised. Went to the restaurant but it was full. Returned to the hotel all was dark and the reception couldn't be accessed as all doors were locked. This was before 9 pm

Some good and some worse but not a bad experience.

The chateau is really nice as a property: not too big not to small, really elegant ; could possibly serve in a motion movie. You will need your GPS for finding out the place, in the middle of the fields. Location is gorgeous, on top of a hill (from there the name). Exterior is impressive, interior is less, wellin line with the alledged 3 stars. Things look and are a bit old fashioned but comfortable enough: beds are good and bathrooms decently large. Amenities are little genereus.

The restaurant is definitely not bad but somewhat expensive ween compared to local competition: a starter combined wirh entree and dessert will cost you 48€ per person + drinks. The menu offers different flavours but appears limited with a chouce of 5 starters, 5 entrees and as many desserts. Cheese offers a single option. Knowung that the menu changes onlymperiodically, you quickly will have doen the complete journey.

The wine list is limited and expensive vis. competition.

Breakfast is correct: Bread, butter, ham, cheese, jam, fruit and unlimited excellent coffee. Privé is apportioned.

More annoying is the complete absence of dood or drink service from 10::30 to 17:30. NOTHING, ZERO, NADA!

Would you not move and stay at the simple but pleasant swimming pool , you beter have taken care of drinks and lunch at the superette of the next village, a few kilometers away.

Personnel and service is friendly and efficient, with flaws sometimes which are then corrected with good will.

As a summary, the Chateau de la Côte is definitely not the place for fans of five stars hotels. Well an interesting moment for lovers of places with character, ready to forgive a few things which could definitely bring the place to a higher and more professional level.
The question is whether doing so is the ambition of the landlord.... probably not I would say.

From there the average rating, with a + mention maybe.

Shabby but far from being chic

The suite we were allocated was situated in the tower which offered nice views of the surrounding countryside; however, the rooms were barely clean. We spotted a dead spider in the bathtub . The bathroom itself was a long and narrow corridor which was divided into two sections, the two being linked by an even narrower stretch of a corridor. This was very strange indeed. The fixtures of the washbasin and bathtub were of the cheapest quality , making it impossible to properly turn the washbasin faucet off.
In addition, the bed was extremely uncomfortable, consisting of a hard and thin mattress, lumpy pillows , and scratchy sheets.
The room was spartan, bordering on cheap and shabby with a wobbly chair and scratched chest of drawers.
The hotel is remote from any village which may add to its charm, but this wasn't for us as one had to drive miles through a forest and narrow road in order to get there.
We had booked the rooms for two nights, ate in sits the first night. The meal was fine but the service proceeded at glacial pace.
We ate out the second night, arrived back at the hotel at around 11.20 pm to find the whole place shut and dark.As we had left the room keys with reception in the morning, we found ourselves in a bit of a dilemma. Fortunately, ten minutes later, we spotted one of the staff jumping on his motorcycle to go back home. He was gracious to open the door for us. It is still amazing to me that reception didn't even notice that three guests had no means to get back into the hotel!!!
Needless to say, we will never return.
