What People are saying

More a student house than a hotel

XMRI on 15/11/2016 13:47

When entering the building it was more looking at a student chambre like I used to have when I was studying at the university more than two decades ago. The room was clean and tidy but the bathroom was really disappointing. Could be ideal if you just ended you education but today standards and defaults are higher than this. Breakfast was not special.

Charming? Retro? Stuck in the seventies maybe

LaHaza on 31/07/2016 12:19

We booked this place to be able to attend a family celebration earlier this month. Our original intention was for it to be a place to be close to the family, yet have a little privacy. I know the place well from my youth, having spent many hours in the cinema, which is part of the set-up. The business card mentions: "charming, retro hotel" and an amazing breakfast. Errr no. Let's start with the good thing. The twin beds were comfortable to sleep in. The shower was OK but difficult to get into with the folding door. Good points: tick.
What the owner means with retro is probably "stuck in the seventies" when I spent my teenage years. And many parts of the hotel look like they haven't been touched since, cleaned or otherwise. Old-fashioned and dirty are better ways of describing, as for charm, well the only charm I could find would be the East German kind. It looks like the carpets are still original and tell a tale of woes. Pock-marked, dirty, everything in dire need of a paint job, windows with curtains half hanging off, condensation running down them (mid summer), locks so old you could probably open them with a pen, poky room and then the worst of all, the cleanliness. The shower had one clean pane (the one that could be reached) and one covered in limescale. The toilet had a rusty stain from where it had been leaking for quite some time, the air filter above the toilet looked like it had never seen a duster, and the hair and dust that greeted us in the corner by the shower is probably still there now. After the first night, our room was not "cleaned" either. To top it all off, between the curtains we found what probably once was a shelf, with the shelf broken off, exposing three screws pointing out, very, very dangerous, particularly for smaller children (see photo).
Breakfast (in what once must have been a beautiful room), described as an amazing continental breakfast suffered from the same disinterest. The moment I see a thermos with coffee, my heart sinks. And so it was: lukewarm coffee, even lukewarmer water for tea, anaemic cheese and ham, boil your own egg and everything else the typical plastic hotel fare (jams and honey). The only decent thing about it was the bread and selection of mini viennoiseries, no surprise with good bakeries abounding around the centre. The ambience was as good as the days of Erich Honecker, glass chandeliers and ditto wall sconces, all with one or two bulbs working when there were twenty in each chandelier, again never having been touched with any cleaning tools. Not one single effort to personalise, or make it into something worth eating, in all the times we had breakfast, we saw no staff, ever. No home-made jam, no offer of other egg preparations, just the same lack-lustre, minimum effort job.
Meanwhile, every night upon return we were greeted by a group of what appeared East European gentlemen having a barbecue in the courtyard. While they looked a bit intimidating, all went well until the weekend, when the place was filled with yelling and screaming, going off into the High street, clearly a disagreement after maybe one too many libations (plenty of which were apparent most nights). As we are in the same trade, and we like to do things properly, we took our concerns to the receptionist. Friendly enough, but not often in evidence. We pointed out our concerns about the room, the noise, but the lady was not particularly interested. While she appeared to share our concerns (and a few others once they heard us complain) and mentioned that they had "good rooms" too, all we were told was to contact the owner. I duly did that on the day of our return home, with a reminder sent a few days later. To date, 4 weeks later, I am still waiting. Incidentally, the receptionist told us off for waiting three days to tell them about the troubles in our room. Eermmm, the toilet had been running for months, the hair and dust was there for the duration, and why oh why do the staff not report any of these faults and problems. Ours do, as they know as well as we do it's important to get stuff fixed asap.
We did query why, when we booked a double room, we were given a twin, especially as we made our reservation months in advance, but no answer was forthcoming. The noise was blamed on a group of "Spaniards" who had beens staying for a few months. Always dangerous to lie to your guests, we live in Spain and they were, most definitely, not Spanish. All of them drove cars and vans registered in a variety of East European countries, and are probably guest workers in the building industry. Loud TV and barbecue noises at night, very early showers and lots of door slamming noises early in the morning.
Not an experience I would like to repeat

Not sure what to say

jan64london on 15/12/2015 23:02

I don't know what to say....... Was not what I was expecting, I know it was cheap but cleanliness is a weak point, breakfast could have been better, I understood that if your guests of hotel cinema was free, our room could have been cleaned (doors, walls) only 1 socket in the room (coming off the wall), room could have been hoovered and mopped daily, but did read previous review (month ago)off another guest stating that on entry into hotel it smelt of faeces, which was correct, there was workmen there, but this hotel not one of my favourites.

Good price

Very nice a retro cinema looking building inside and a cinema things in every step (wallpapers, cinema chairs).
After night we discovered, that is actual working old small cinema theatre :)

Very good and delicious breakfast. No fancy things.

Efficient and just what we wanted

Michael B on 26/07/2015 21:41

We stayed here one night after the ferry to Dunkirk on the way to Germany. The room was clean, nice shower and good wifi. Breakfast was fine. The town of Aalter has a lovely square with nice places to eat. The price was very reasonable and the location for the context of our journey very good. The only criticism, the stairwell had a musky smell but this did not intrude to our room.
