Fairfield Inn, It was what I expected
steveleary1on 02/05/2017 19:33Fairfield Inn in Olean, right across the street from St. Bonaventure University. Clean, Good location. Just what you would expect from Fairfield. Staff was friendly. Hotel is an upgrade over Country Inn and suites ( which used to be at this location ) I prefer it to Best Western because it is quieter.
Just OK.
Raymond Lon 04/04/2017 15:57This hotel used to be a Country Inn and Suites.
It was excellent - with comfy furniture in the lobby and rocking chairs on the front porch - perfect for rural Southern Tier, NY.
Then they re-designed it into a stark, ultra modern hotel.
The furniture in the common area and the rooms is minimal and uncomfortable.
A front end manager said they were aiming for a younger clientele.
What really bugged us this trip was how tiny the room closets are now. In our 2-queen room - it was barely 12 inches deep!
And the ironing board hung on the back wall of this 'closet' takes up a lot of that VERY limited space.
The three of us couldn't hang everything we needed to hang.
How could anyone design something like this?
Very guest un-friendly!
But perhaps the biggest negative is that the hotel basically DOUBLES the room rates for Parents' Weekend and Graduation Weekend at the local university, and mandates a 2-night minimum!
$500 is a lot of money just to spend 2 nights in Olean, NY.
When we called around to find a cheaper room last fall for Parents' Weekend, we found the same policy at the other 2 newer hotels in Olean (owned by the same company - sign of a greedy owner.)
I understand about supply and demand but the 2-night min. is a rip-off.
I sincerely doubt Mr. Marriott - whose story and pictures are prominently displayed in the hotel lobby - would approve of this.
Is this any way to treat your guests?
The only plus really for college parents/family is that it is directly across from St. Bonaventure University.
Didn't appreciate it
ljcjordanon 21/03/2017 21:51Someone had thrown up in our room prior to us staying and that is all I could smell. It smelled like the vomit plus the powder they put on it to absorb it. My Mom and a friend were with me and they could smell something but wasn't sure what it was. Neither of them felt well anyway. I was awake all night and then could not force myself to shower there in the morning because of the feeling that it was not a clean room. I asked housekeeping and they said someone had thrown up in that room but they thought it was thoroughly cleaned and didn't think it could be smelled. They said they removed and cleaned everything. My clothes and my hair smelled like it so I am sure it was on the bed/bedding/pillows. I was sick to know I did actually smell what I thought I did. It was a room with 2 queen beds. I am sure I slept on the one that was thrown up in. I told the front desk about it and they offered to put points on my card. They put 2,500 on my card. (big deal). I have stayed in 2 dozen hotel rooms over the past year. I am just ill about the thought now of how unclean they probably really are under the surface. I am just sick imaging what we were exposed to.
Not that this matters to the stay but the outside coloring doesn't make sense. It is like someone couldn't decide which color they wanted to paint it so they painted it several colors. I thought they were trying to decide which one they liked best and were going to finish later but I guess not. The décor is brand new but it all looks mismatched and busy.
The elevator is the slowest elevator I have ever seen.
On a good note though, the complimentary breakfast was above average and had a very nice bright seating area.
The staff was very friendly. My Mom stayed later than me because she was ill and wanted to sleep longer. When she checked out, one of the cleaning ladies helped her carry her bags out to the car. That was very nice of her and I did appreciate that.
Clean & Quiet
Laurie Mon 16/03/2017 06:53Enjoy this hotel much more now that it's a Marriott brand. (Stayed before when it was a Country inn). Much cleaner, quieter and modern than hotel across the street.
Only noises I heard were doors closing occasionally. Very Comfy beds. Will always stay here when I visit yearly -unless a better Marriott brand builds nearby.
Good, basic Motel within short walk to SBU
ceharvon 07/03/2017 17:51There's nothing fancy about this Fairfield, but it is a nice, very clean, basic motel within a short walk to beautiful St. Bonaventure University and a relatively short drive to various places in and near the "Enchanted Mountains" - e.g., Ellicotville skiing, Finger Lake Wineries, Chautauqua Lake, Salamanca Seneca Casino, etc. The staff is particularly friendly for a chain motel - special shout-out to Amber who noticed me struggling to walk with my luggage and (free) coffee outside my room and came over to help me by taking my luggage not only to the elevator (WNY's slowest), but right to my car. If visiting Bonas - stay here
