What People are saying

No sleep

john1810jdwon 02/08/2017 06:48

Have not enjoyed this hotel one bit. Although the staff are spot on this hotel is no good if its sleep you want. Rooms are out dated bathroom fixtures falling off. Paid 100 quid for the night an didn't even have a bath in room. Mould in shower an the shower head hanging off. I worked nights Monday an was woke to the noise of glass being shot in skip at 6 next night I was in room overlooking rail track and I got no sleep. Food was crap for a great western. At breakfast The bacon and sausages tried to do a runner when I lifted lid . Evening meal was ok the chips are good an my gammon was 50 percent fat. Internet wise I couldn't get nothing in this room so couldn't get my work done.

Excellent

Stayed for 2 nights over weekend of 21/22nd July. Had a lovely clean spacious room at the front which was surprisingly quiet. The hotel decor was refreshing, the staff all polite, friendly and helpful. We had an excellent meal in the restaurant one evening. All cooked fresh to order and nicely presented with a good choose of meals. All-in-all an excellent short break.

A WALK IN THE PAST

The hotel is a very old Railway hotel and must cost a fortune to keep in the good condition we found it. Very clean, well decorated. Reception was well organised and speedy. The staff were fantastic. All so helpful and nothing was to much trouble for them.
The room was large and very comfortable, but very hot when we stayed. Could have done with a fan in the room. Fortunately the dining room had air conditioning. The food was plentiful with a good choice as well as very enjoyable. The only draw back at each meal was the chaos of layout for the serving area and a toaster which blocked everything as it was so inefficient. A good hotel clean, friendly hotel with Excellent staff.

Clean room good nights sleep

Check in was very efficient and friendly. Room was clean and towels fluffy. Hot water was plentiful :-) I got a really good nights sleep on the second floor. I am very happy with the room. However, I sat in the restaurant for a very long time and was completely ignored by the waiting staff. I was there long enough for the man behind me to make two long business calls, the man at the table on my right to make his order and be served a beer, other people to sit at a round table for 4 and be served wine. Long enough for the server to go in and out of the kitchen more than once. Long enough to not wish to stay and order the Burger that I was looking forward to after reading the menu in my room. Epic fail here. Not even the slightest glimmer of eye contact did I receive. Shameful customer service...

A hotel from a bygone age please preserve.

We have been on many coach tours with National and stayed in a variety of hotels but it’s been a while since we stayed in a Best Western and my recollection was of an older establishment compared with the Holiday/Jurys Inn type of establishment. And so it proved with this hotel, from a bygone age but none the worse for it, our room, on the second floor, was a fair size and very welcoming and clean, what more could you ask for? Check in had been straight forward and the electronic age has overtaken the door key. The bygone age hotel provided a bath, and showerhead affixed to the taps, instead of the just the shower option, soap/shower gel was provided by containers on the wall. My wife and I freshened up and went down for our evening meal, the décor of these older establishment tends to be more stylish, not so much wooden floors, more carpets.

We were directed to a large beautifully styled room, again a décor from a bygone age of large cornices and huge windows with imposing curtains. We were handed a menu, the soup was served to you but for the main meal you just went to a little room next door, set up as a temporary servery if you like and picked from what was on offer. We had the chicken, served to by a chef, then you chose your veg and potato’s, but then another staff member served either gravy or a mushroom sauce. As seems to be the case a whole coach load of customers, many elderly, are not patient so when some of the holiday makers dawdled over their choice of food others soon got irate, but the staff did their best.

The food was superb, from the soup to the sweet, which was, like the soup, served to you by very able and efficient staff. We finished our meal, then back to our room to settle down for the night in comfortable beds, and having had a fairly busy day of walking we were soon asleep. Down for breakfast in the morning and a similar set up only you just helped yourself, in the little annexe room, for the full English breakfast. When some of the food trays were low they were replenished from a kitchen in a room opposite, but as is the case some still grumbled. Fruit juice, bread and a toasting machine, fruit itself, yoghurt, were all on offer but I’ve probably missed something off as I just take on board what I want. Again, staff were on hand to take away empty plates and like the night before the same staff and the same efficiency. This hotel was far more decorative than some we have stayed in and I hope they don’t refurb or modernise the décor in the future, freshen things up by all means but the splendour of such hotels are fading from our country.
