Louth_13on 24/08/2017 22:50We stayed in Aunt Clara's. We were shown in by Ron who was polite but lingered a little too long. We'd just had quite a drive and he came into the room to show us how to use the tv and tell us some history about the area. I guess it was better than him being abrupt and just handing us a key but after our drive we really just wanted to relax. There's nothing to do within walking distance.
He recommended a place for us to eat, The Magnolia Grill. I'm not sure why it was recommended, maybe they have some business arrangement because the place was mostly filled with people who were staying at the B&B. The food was just ok, limited menu and it wouldn't be my top recommendation.
Breakfast was horrendous. They served this thing called peekaboo eggs which was basically an egg inside a bread roll. No one at my table could eat it.
I didn't get the impression that Ron was particularly nice to his staff which was the biggest off put for me.
Breakfast
RJB394on 09/08/2017 22:13Devereaux Shields House, Aunt Clara’s Cottage Breakfast.
Based on our past experience with B&B breakfasts, the breakfasts served at this establishment would rate 3 stars at best.
When we were seated, one half a place setting was missing. Another guest was missing a teaspoon which was replaced with a soup spoon.
The presentation of the breakfast plate was sub standard and the taste of the food was lacking. Of the six guests seated at our table two refused plates and the other guests left the grits barely touched because of excess salt. The two who refused the plates asked for something else and were offered white toast. The toast was placed on the table but the guests had to ask for plates.
When one of the guests requested hot milk for their coffee, the server looked bewildered by the request.
I offer these comments in hope that management will improve the breakfast offering and train the wait staff to improve the level of service.
Fantastic
Newbs2012on 09/08/2017 20:37We had been looking forward to this stop on our road trip through the music cities of the South. We wanted some relaxation before our final stop of New Orleans. Ron and Eleanor didn't disappoint. A beautiful house, luxurious linens and the amazing front gallery to relax on. Breakfast was served in Aunt Clark's cottage so we got to see the decor there too. I loved the homemade biscuits.
Our favourite local place to eat was the historic Kings Tavern, an easy stroll from the house.
Beautifully accommodated
Teri Gon 09/08/2017 11:46We stayed overnight at this wonderful B&B in the heart of historic homes. Owners were welcoming and thorough. Staff was very friendly. Every accommodation was at our fingertips. Bed very comfortable, pet friendly, rooms large. Short stay, but a nice visit.
Ron and Eleanor are wonderful
Matt Hon 25/07/2017 17:43I booked the Victoria Suite in Aunt Clara's Cottage (separate house from the Devereaux Sheilds House) for two nights for our anniversary vacation. We arrived at our check-in time of 2:00 PM, and were greeted by a young lady (I unfortunately did not get her name). I was not impressed with her service, as she did not give us very much information about the house or our stay, was rather unpleasant overall, and actually double charged my credit card for our stay. She did not offer a receipt at all upon our check-in. She then showed us to our rooms and gave us the keys. Later, when I caught the fact that she had charged my credit card again, I returned to the main house to ask her about it, and she gave me the feeling she was not happy to correct the mistake, but I felt like a bother. She finally had to ask the owner, Ron, to come help her, as she did not know how to fix it. This was the first time I met either of the owners, and I was pleasantly suprised! He was very friendly, and quickly corrected the receptionist's mistake, refunding my money. He offered to make reservations for our dinner at the Magnolia Grill later that evening. Throughout the remainder of our stay, we only dealt with Ron or his lovely wife, Eleanor. We enjoyed a reception of Rootbeer floats and cheese/crackers while chatting with Eleanor later that afternoon. I cannot say enough good about them. They both went out of their way to make us feel at home, and treated us like family. Also, the breakfast both mornings were delicious, and the staff were excellent. The bed was perfect, and we had a very comfortable stay, other than the troubled check-in experience. My only suggestion is that the owners keep a tighter reign on the employees who check-in their guests, as the first impression is usually the most important. The young lady's attitude left a good bit to be desired.
