Shambles of a hotel

Have stayed here at least three times with no issues but have just returned from a disastrous 2 nights. We arrived to find a very confused man on reception who insisted we didn't have a booking, this was despite me having printed out the email confirming that I had booked 3 rooms for us and our friends. Eventually someone else came along and confirmed that the bookings did exist. Great, except that she then mentioned that there was no food available and the bar only had draft beer. I had received a phone call from the hotel two days previously confirming details and this was not mentioned, as we had planned to have lunch here after a long drive this was not welcome news. Once our friends arrived we had no choice other than to walk nearly 2 miles to the next village in search of a meal.
Breakfast the next day was chaotic, not enough crockery or cutlery and only the basics available although the staff were trying their best the service was woeful, it was even worse on the second morning. The staff explained that the hotel had changed hands and the previous owners had taken everything - cutlery, china, cooking facilities etc. Although not unsympathetic to the new owners plight none of this was mentioned during the confirmation phone call two days previously.
I could go on and on about this hotels shortcomings but this would be an even longer review!
In view of all the problems all 9 of my party, and several other guests, did not feel inclined to pay the full £80 per night charge. We explained this to the, very pleasant and sympathetic, receptionist. After consultation with the new owner we were offered a 10% discount, we didn't feel this was enough and after a lot of telephone calls to the owner we eventually settled at £60 per night.
This place is best avoided at the moment, hopefully the new owners will eventually restore the good service we have recrived in the past.

Good location - needs to be warmer

Visited Devonport earlier this year and found the staff very good, as well as the food - location is brilliant. One improvement to make is to have better control of the temperature, as it was cold when we visited.

Great place but let down by breakfast

We stayed for one night on the 7th July 2017, which was our 33rd wedding anniversary and was paid for by our son. The room was comfortable and clean and we had a lovely view at the front of the hotel. The staff where friendly and we could not fault the place, apart from our disappointment at breakfast time. We had little jugs of milk on the tables and so I poured milk into my coffee and it began to curdle. I thought it was cream but it turned out to be milk gone off. My wife pointed it out to the, very polite young man, and he just explained that it was milk left overnight and we should use the big jug on the main breakfast table. We looked and noticed other jugs on other tables the same. The bottom of our milk was solidified. It made us feel like it was our mistake for using jugs of milk on your table. Very strange and then my wife picked an orange from the fruit bowl and half of it was green and white mould. The breakfast itself was lovely and plenty of it but the milk, orange and seemingly, lack of acceptance for the errors by the staff, made us regret our stay at this hotel. Very sad because there was nothing else we could falter and we always look for the positive when we can. A little closer look to detail and this would have been rectified.

Great value for money

Stayed here just the 1 night whilst visiting our son. Bed and breakfast for £50- unbelievable value. Room was basic but had a comfortable bed as well as tea and coffee facilities- even a packet of biscuits. The shower was difficult to get to work but once it was set right it was fine. The young fella that checked us in was lovely and provided us with the local number of a taxi so we could go for something to eat. Breakfast was good quality and plentiful. Would definitely return

I loved this place

Came here for one night for a change of scenery. Beautiful surroundings. The hotel itself was quirky, but I like that. It wasn't high end by any stretch of the imagination, and fixtures and fittings were a bit dated, however, I don't spend a lot of time looking at them. The staff were great, very laid back yet accommodating, food was ok, but I must say the whole ambience of the place was great! Only gave 4/5 as I've stayed in places that are much more up market but this is by far my favourite. Definitely worth a visit.
