Whilst on holiday in Lewis, we decided to come for Sunday lunch to the Doune Braes Hotel. My sister-in-law uses a wheel chair so we took great pains to phone the hotel in advance to inquire about its accessibility and more importantly if there was a disabled toilet. We were assured that the hotel was both accessible for wheel chair users AND had a disabled toilet.
We then travelled 45 minutes from our holiday accommodation in Uig to celebrate my sister-in-law's 50th birthday with a lunch at the Doune Breaes, only to have the lunch cut short because my sister-in-law needed to use the toilet - which turned out to be NOT accessible by wheelchair at all as the doors were too tight.
Needless to say that this thoroughly spoiled my sister-in-laws day as we then had to rush the 45 mins back to use the toilet in our accessible cottage.
I find it very disappointing that the hotel clearly doesn't think what should be classed as accessible. The situation was not helped by a member of staff trying to be helpful and offer assistance with the words 'How far can she walk'? Well, she is using a wheel chair for a reason - because she CANNOT walk.
If your toilet facilities do not allow for wheelchair access, please don't claim that you are accessible. If we had known this, we would have ensured to choose a different place to eat.
We stayed here on the last night of our wonderful cycle along the Hebridean Way. It was supposed to be a special treat for our last night and was by far the most expensive place we stayed in. We'd stayed in some fantastic B&Bs along the way but sadly despite paying £75/person for B&B we did not have a good stay.
We arrived very cold and tired after a long days cycle and said we hoped we had a bath which we did. So we really looked forward to a warm and relaxing bath each. They said we should wait 1/2 hour to check that water was warm which we did. I managed a very small bath which was just warm enough, but by the time my friend tried to have a bath there was no hot water left at all, despite the hotel being quiet. I went down to explain and they said they would re-boot the hot water. Half an hour later still no hot water, so I went down again, at this stage I was offered a bucket of hot water from the kitchen??? In the end my friend tried to have a shower, that didn't work either!
The best feature was the view from our room which was lovely over the little lake. The room was OK, very large but lacked any real quality or added extras and it was all a bit tired. The other highlight was the lovely Italian waitress who was charming and friendly and tried to make up for the fact that despite a long wine list there were actually no bottles of wine available to buy! Dinner was home cooked and quite enjoyable but with limited choice. Good breakfast and a very nice Scottish lady serving.
However the biggest issue was the total lack of care or attention to the issue of no hot water. I hate putting bad comments on Trip Advisor and would always give the manager/owner a chance to put things right. In this case despite raising the issue repeatedly in the evening there was no real apology, no offer of a compensatory drink even. In fact we were even asked to pay our full bill in the evening, what did this imply?? In the morning I raised the issue with the owner, again no apology and a total lack of recognition or care that there was any issue at all. No offer of a free night in the future, no apology no nothing. It just felt like we were two troublesome cyclists that weren't worth bothering with. Usually Scottish hospitality is superb, this experience really let that reputation down, we were both really disappointed.
We were advised that this place was good for Sunday lunch. So we arrived, asked for the lunch menu, to find a choice of 3 mains, haddock and chips was priced at about £13+. We decided on soup and sandwiches. The "home made" tomato soup was no more than tinned tomatoes with basil flavouring. The sandwiches were on cheap white bread which was stale. I told the waitress but little response and to be frank couldn't be bothered pushing further. Don't go here, terrible.
We had to stay here for one night in June due to awful weather and whilst the rooms were comfortable the food was truly awful. One member of our party had some allergies and the serving staff sent to speak to the Chef who said he was unable to provide any food at all. There was no solution or alternative provided and only after intervention from one of our party with the suggestion of a baked potato was that eventually provided. The guest was extremely embarrassed and had actually gone to our own food supply to eat with us at the table. The Chef should be ashamed that he/she was not able to provide anything especially with the £140 room charge. Breakfast was excellent. Overheard the manager speaking to Chef about it on the Sunday and that was even more unprofessional when a guest was about.
We were here for three nights and enjoyed magnificent scenery, wonderful food and cozy accommodations.
I was in a single room which, while admittedly small, was very comfortable and had everything I needed, not to mention a lovely view of the little loch.
Hospitality plus!
