If you are looking for comfort, stay away
eveybpon 16/08/2017 21:40I reserved two double rooms in close proximity to each other. My husband and I were given the Manor Suite (not as an upgrade) and my friend was stuck on the top floor. No elevator. If you cannot do stairs, don't come here. When I asked the receptionist to help with the luggage, I was presented with a sour face. When I told here we were to have been placed close to each other, she looked at the computer and said "Oh, I didn't notice that." She told us that we could park on the perpendicular street, but it was all for residents. When I asked for a restaurant recommendation, she sent us to a place that had already stopped serving dinner after I specifically asked her if they were still serving (it was 7:45pm). So much for customer service.
Now onto the other issues. The room looks OK at first blush - palatial even - until you start to see that everything is old and worn out. The bed is at least 50 years old with the impression of all previous residents - kind of like the mother's bed in Psycho. It was extremely uncomfortable. There were burned out lightbulbs, no bottled water and no tissues.
But the worst was the bathroom. There were two sinks, one of which did not work. There were two mirrors - guess what? One had nonworking lights. The toilet seat was like taking a ride every time you sat down because it was not fully attached. The flusher was loose and broken. But the piece de resistance was the shower. The screen sounded like Banquo's ghost had paid a visit. When it was finally in position, it did not stop the water from spilling out onto the floor. The shower attachment was coming off the wall and the shower head would not stay in position. You were lucky to get any water actually on your body.
I had also been precharged for breakfast but did not eat anywhere near the amount charged. It would have been better to just pay as we ordered. There wasn't much to choose from anyway.
I have to say this was probably the worst hotel I've ever had the displeasure to stay in. In actually I would like a refund as a gesture of good faith.
Nice location and quiet
scarletredcton 14/08/2017 21:22My elderly parents and I needed space for 4 without reserving two rooms since we had my 3 year-old daughter with us. We were given a choice of two rooms- we chose the basement room sight unseen. Bad choice. It was a VERY small space for 4 people and the room had no ventilation so it was extremely stuffy and damp in the room ALL the time. I can deal with the dated furnishings, but the "bed" for myself and my daughter turned out to be a VERY uncomfortable pull-out couch. At least there were kids tv channels and Wifi to keep her happy. I am pleased to report, however, that the bathroom was excellent- spacious with a deep tub. It was in a good, walkable location three blocks away from Princes Street and was close to good restaurants. We also appreciated that they only charged 10 GBP for a laundry service. And the staff was wonderful and helpful. But be aware breakfast is NOT included in the price- it's 5 GBP per person for a continental breakfast, not a hot cooked breakfast.
Quiet location in August
DRL615on 13/08/2017 18:43Family needed space for 4 without reserving two rooms, so family rooms got our attention. It needs a complete make over, typical old European hotel, carpet, walls, bedding and baths all a mishmash of colors and fabrics. Kids were in a pull out sofa, bathroom floor very soft, like the entire subfloor was gone. All that to say, this was a very quiet part of town and in August that is impossible to find. It was only 1 mile from Edinburgh Castle, 2 miles from Holyrood. Close to good restaurants. A very walkable location, the staff was wonderful and helpful in every way.

SSleinadon 31/07/2017 15:15I found Thistle when I was looking for accommodations for 3 guests in one room. The room was a little smaller than I thought it would be (for 3 guests but for 2 guests it would've been fine) and we barely had room to open our suitcases at the same time (unless they were on the beds). No A/C which is usually fine for the UK but we were in the basement and the window only opened a few inches so it was stuffy. No hair dryer and the door on the shower actually fell off and I wasn't even touching it (was able to fix it without calling the front desk) but it could've been bad if it had broken. Location is great; on a quiet road in New Town and walking distance to a lot or a short Uber ride to everything else. The best part of the hotel was the employee/customer service as he was really nice and welcoming.
A hotel in need on some TLC
krashlordon 27/07/2017 10:01Very tired rooms with poorly maintained decor. Toilet seat was loose. Bed was about 1 foot off the floor. Internet connection was slow. Continental breakfast offering was pathetic. A hotel living off its past glories.
