What People are saying

An amazing hotel but service needs work

Hannahrejohnsonon 07/08/2017 17:46

I've been visiting Mondelieu-la-Napoule every year for almost my entire life! My family and I have stayed at L'Ermitage more times than I can count and have continued to return there for many consecutive years. It's one of our favourite places in the world and the hotel has always been a delight to stay in.

However, having recently returned from a trip there, I am disappointed to say that the service has decreased so much, I think we would re-consider returning. The rooms have always been clean and well taken care of, and although they have been beautifully refurbished recently, we were put in a room that had clearly had smokers staying in there before. The room stank of stale smoke and the hotel staff were fairly unsympathetic about it. After somewhat of a fuss was made, they did agree to put us in a different room, which we were grateful for - but the gesture was tarnished by the amount we had to fight for it. We would never have had to do that 2-4 years ago.

The breakfast is now completely self service, and although eating on the balcony is a spectacular way to spend your morning, we missed the service, particularly when it came to the coffee that is now a 'help yourself to Espresso capsule and make it yourself in a machine' situation, which I'm very familiar with because I do it at home every day. They used to serve pots of delicious coffee that could be enjoyed in abundance throughout your breakfast was very much missed. Part of the pleasure of coming on holiday is to get away from daily routines and enjoy some French culture and cuisine, and should be something we see in a 4 star hotel.

We missed the service around the pool. Lovely waiters and waitresses used to come around every hour or so and ask if you would like any refreshments or a fresh towel. Now, you have to go up to the restaurant bar and order it yourself. A small touch that makes all the difference. At one point we were actually told where to find the towels ourselves in the cupboard under the pool, which again is not the service I expect to see in a 4 star hotel.

They also got rid of their gym recently which was, granted, a small room with some simple equipment in but it was very convenient and was an excellent touch. The gym is now a 15 minute drive away, and barely worth the visit..

I really hope the hotel takes on some of these comments and reconsiders the direction the hotel is going in. It genuinely used to be a fantastic place to stay, a real treat in fact! It's in a wonderful location with stunning views, it deserves to be AMAZING not average.

The hotel is very nice. My room had a small balcony towards the seaside. It is very quiet at night, and the personell is always smiling and helpfull. The breakfast was taken at the balcony towards the cannel, and was rich and tasty. I recommend this hotel!

Our Stay in France

Our stay was only one night but it was a good experience. The staff were most helpful and friendly. The location was wonderful for our needs. We certainly would recommend this hotel to our friends and family.

Mixed experience

All the staff were really friendly and good. Nice location and pretty hotel but very, very expensive for what it is.

Specific downsides: Annoyingly I specifically requested a king / queen sized bed as I am 6 feet 2 inches tall and we were given two single beds (made up individually as such) which were merely pushed together.

Worse still this "4 star hotel" had no functioning kitchen - or so we were told when we requested room service. This was not 3 am room service either but just something simple at 2000. Only thing on offer was either meat or cheese sandwiches, nothing hot or any salads even. No idea how they managed to provide the advertised breakfast in the morning. I guess that makes it a 4 star hostel, not a hotel. Despite very apologetic front desk no offer of a refund was made at check out by way of compensation.

The shower in this expensive "deluxe room" was merely an attachment to the bath taps in the bath so was very restricted and difficult to use.
