Stayed for 1 week in june 2017 and I would say this hotel is good value £287.00 plus flight for one week half board. Room nice size with kitchenette , med size toilet with shower, all very clean. The food is ok no complaints. 2 pools very clean. The hotel is in a quite area so zero nightlife/pubs etc. Small spar shop on site and large supermarket 10/15 mins walk away. one of the reception ladies is just plain rude and is in the wrong job, perhaps the worst behaving front of house person i have ever met.
Don't be put off by some ridiculous bad revues, the aparthotel is clean, is cleaned regularly, with fresh towels daily except of course for Sundays. It must be conceded that there were ants initially with the odd mozzy buzzing around but a huge aerosol was provided and was very effective. The bed and sofa bed were very comfortable with ample covers available. The kitchen was very well equipped with; coffee maker, kettle, toaster, hobs, ample cutlery, plates, pots, pans etc and a microwave. Sometimes there was the brief wiff of mild sewerage but unless you are ultra sensitive it's not a problem. The criticism of the reception staff is partially justified in as much as they are quite abrupt and not full of beaming smiles but never the less helpful. The resort is very quiet, ideal for a chill but little else. There is a small Spa and gift shop and a very welcoming '' Safari Bar'' on site as well as a buffet style eatery which we didn't try but that's about it. The white/gold sandy beach is lovely and vast and just about 300 yds away, however nudists abound to the right. The bus stop referred to ''as just outside''the hotel is not used anymore and is now sited up the hill towards the main road.
Worst Hotel I have ever had the Misfortune to stay at it could have ruined Christmas for us. The staff 3 receptionists were equally as rude and unhelpful as each other I was in the Hotel business for over 12 years and never came across such rude people before, the food was inedible over baked slop I have stayed in better travelodges and that's saying something. On a plus side Esquinzo is a lovely little place the locals both German, English and Spanish were lovely Owen's bar staff were great. the Surf Bar on Beach has lovely food reasonable priced just a shame the Monte del mar was so bad
For info, I was confused as to whether this hotel 'Monte del Mar' was the same as 'Esquinzo hotel' on arrival, I found they are one and the same but this isn't clear when booking and weighing up each review against the other.
Yes, this was a reasonably budget priced bracket hotel. However, despite my expectations being low, there were some aspects I feel fell below standard.
On arrival after 24hours since leaving home, there was no hot (nor even 'warm') water. This was a let down, and over 7 nights stay there were only 3 occasions when the water was hot enough to be pleasant. The shower pressure was fine but shoots out beyond the shower curtain and onto the floor unless you hold the head all the time. So beware flooded bathroom floor!
The room size was fine for two. The furnishings and decor were perfectly adequate, and on the surface the room was clean, however, I did feel it needed a thorough deep clean (black mouldy grouting, general dirt behind the doors, fridge smelled of mildew and was grimey).
The laminated info sheet in the room in German, stated that bedding would be changed once a week (which I interpreted as we'd have clean sheets once during our one week stay, we didn't). The info stated the towels would be changed and the room serviced/cleaned every day bar Weds and Sun. This didn't happen on Sat (nor Sun, but expected not to), nor Mon or Tues. well, it did eventually happen on Mon at 5.30pm after I had complained 3 times since 2pm. I don't believe in changing towels unless there's a need and after 3 days of use and no way of drying them (they blew off balcony), there was no heated towel rail etc, so they were very damp and starting to smell. I had to use them to mop the shower flood too. When the room hadn't been serviced yet again on Tues, there was no one to raise this with. The reception staff are just two German ladies who rotate shifts but seem to keep their own hours bearing no relation to advertised open hours. They really aren't there when it's convenient for guests. When I reported the room issue the next day, it was met with a grunt. We were leaving anyway so I guess not even an apology was forthcoming. I do speak some German, but I feel for anyone who doesn't, as no one appeared to speak English.
There are two pools but neither are heated so are so cold and no one used them in December. This was a shame as the areas are more sheltered from the wind so they would have been useful.
Food is German and buffet style, there was plenty of it. Veg & fruit, aside from lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes, seemed to be canned; green beans, artichokes, mushrooms, pineapple, peaches etc. 99% of guests were German. The restaurant staff are Spanish but speak German. Only one seemed vaguely content and was pleasant, the others looked miserable, over worked and I didn't see them smile the whole week.
Location-wise Esquinzo is very quiet. Near the Monte del Mar/Esquinzo were two other hotels (one is a nudist place), there is a Spar shop, a gift shop and a bar which are all located on the same site as the Monte del Mar. The beach is very nice and about 6 mins walk from the hotel down a rough stony track which leaders to steps. I wouldn't say it was pushchair friendly nor ideal for people with mobility problems.
There are lots of nudists on the beach. It's very very very windy. The sea is very clear, a lovely turquoise and very wavy. In late December it was also very pleasantly warm! The sand is white, there are also lots of black boulders/rocks (get covered or uncovered by the sand depending on how rough the waves and strong the tides are). People have built small circular windbreaks which are great and certainly mean you can enjoy the warmth minus the wind.
I wouldn't return to this hotel at all, nor would I recommend it to anyone.
Up the cliff from a beautiful natural beach, hotel pretty average, but clean and comfortable with acceptable range in restaurant. We had half board, don't know if it's usual but it doesn't include drinks of any kind, so you have to pay for them separately: only two Euros for water etc.
One complaint: the smell of sewerage up from the nearby tank farm, it's occasionally a bit strong!
