Peaceful retreat in poros

shiv32_10on 19/05/2017 10:30

Filoxenia is a secluded and beautiful place for a a peaceful break. We were greeted by the lovely Lily and with both our limited language, with the obligatory pointing and one words we where shown to our sea view room. The rooms are basic but with enough to get by, there is two hobs and a fridge and the kitchen and bathroom where cleaned daily by a sensitive cleaner who only came when we went out be it morning or afternoon, this was reassuring when we wanted to sleep in.
Filoxenia is very quiet so is perfect for couples wanting a 'get a way from it' break, with good wifi in the room if required. It is on the outskirts of Poros and in late may we had the entire beach to ourselves every day. It was a 15min walk to poros itself for daily bread and supplies, I would highly recommend the butchers next to the bakery which not only sells beautiful meats but a cheeses and deli counter too and amazing prices! The local Greek wine was the most reasonable priced 3.90 for 1.5 litre, and light and fruity. Most shops opened till 2pm. If you want karaoke and swimming pools this isn't the place, however if you want peace, Sun, quiet beach and sparkling sea this will be perfect at a very clean and Friendly accommodation. We will be back to explore more of the island.

Welcoming

I stayed at filoxenia for three weeks in august
the rooms are very clean typically greek basic but that's ok
no kettle a pan to boil water (quite fun)
the rooms are cleaned every day even sunday
one thing quite unusual in Greece No wet bathroom floor it was a treat to shower twice
a day and not have to wipe the floor afterwards they have got it just right.
The family are a delight mama and papa don't speak much English but are charming and cannot do enough for you if you need anything just ask, they are great
Dimitri was there for a while a lovely guy
if they ever open a hotel anywhere else in Greece I would stay there
I will not go back to poros because of the wasps they were present all day every day until it went dark after 45 stings I stopped counting, I was stung one morning 7 times in
ten minutes on the beach and felt quite ill so had to go back to the hotel
it didn't matter what you put on to repel them they were constantly around you
which became tiring
the hotel is a long walk to the nearest taverna and shop but the shop does deliver shopping
I found it easier to walk to the beach etc by going straight ahead instead of down the steep hill, the walk undulates a bit but was easier for me
if you have a car or bike, a great place to stay as long as you don't mind being stung all the time.
great family clean accommodation Dimitri please open a hotel in corfu

Lovely hotel but no pool

Cannot fault the owners, lovely and clean hotel. The hill to hotel was very steep though. Could do with a warning on the website for people who have difficulty in walking. No pool or snack bar either, wich would have been a bonus. Would stay in area again, lovely and quiet, but not in this hotel due to lack of pool or food availability.Another plus is the fantastic views and the very friendly people.

Good value, clean, and basic

Stayed a week in July 2016, upgraded to a sea view room before i went.

Pros - Very clean, quiet, helpfull owners. Owners offered lift back with water when they saw me walking along road. They gave me fruit out of the garden and eggs. Small flowers left in room. Could see and hear sea. Only a short walk to long white pebble beach. Free aircon and wifi.

Cons- No bar/swimming pool on site. 20 minute walk to restaurants and bar with pool. Owners speak limited English

Gave 5 star as owners were so nice, and room was such good value, with air con and wifi, and the lovely view of the sea. However, although i wanted a quiet break, it was a little too quiet. By the end of a week i was ready for home. It would be better for couples or partys with transport

The choice for peace and quiet

If you are going to stay in Poros you already know it is a small place compared with the resorts elsewhere in the island. Experiencing genuine Greek culture, mixing with the locals, and having the beach practically to yourself are just some of the upsides to staying in Poros. You really can have a proper break. If you want to see the island, rent a car for a day or two from 'Rentme' in the port, do the sights and then return to Poros for relaxation. We enjoyed our stay at the Filoxenia. It was very clean and well maintained. You are in a self catering apartment so it does not have a bar or pool but your room has a fridge, sink and small two-ring hob for cooking. We had a balcony with a sea view and the view really was wonderful. The price for this is the steep hill leading up to the building. If you have issues with walking you should consider whether this will be a problem. There is also about a 20 minute walk to get down to the tavernas and shops, though this is all along the seafront with views of Ithaca and other islands. The Greeks being as they are you will probably be offered a lift at some stage. At the bottom of the hill leading to the hotel is the pebble beach which is lovely to have a few minutes from your room. All in all a good experience.
