Quality hotel, exceptional location
Daniel Don 02/08/2017 20:29The best thing about the hotel is its location: On a small street right off the Royal Mile, just up the hill from the Waverley train station, and a short walk from the stores of Princes Street and the restaurants of Rose Street. Our room was relatively spacious and very comfortable, though the cleaning staff could have emptied the trash bins more often. Because of the location we could often hear the pipers playing on the Royal Mile (good if you like pipers). Best feature of the room: It came with its own smartphone, the Handy, which we could take with us while we explored the city and use to reserve restaurants or even call free internationally. The Handy is a very cool feature! Our biggest surprise: the hotel restaurant is vegetarian. So no full Scottish breakfasts! Actually, they didn't even have porridge: The bread was delicious, non-industrial and hearty, the cereals had a sugar-free option, the fruits were plentiful and there were hard-boiled eggs. But nothing was served hot (not even the coffee, which was nice and strong but always seemed to be just a few degrees cooler than I would have liked.) So no hot porridge, which was a surprise in Scotland. Would I go back to this hotel? In a heartbeat! It's a great place. But I'd still be hankering for a hot breakfast.
Great location, terrible hotel standards
Deepa Won 02/08/2017 16:32If it's location you are after then yes this is a great hotel as it's only a 5 min walk to the castle, but if you have standards on cleanliness and general look of the hotel don't book this place! At best it's a 3 star hotel and I think I'm being generous.
I booked this hotel for my 1st wedding anniversary and told the hotel in advance of arriving that was the purpose of the visit and yet this is wasn't even acknowledged... didn't start our trip off well.
We were given a room on the ground floor with no windows,it was depressing (make sure you get a room above the 3rd floor for any hope of decent light). The room standards were terrible. The carpet has marks all over, there were stains on the bedding, stains in the bathroom on the toilet seat and around the sink area, the sofas were dusty as was the whole room. It felt as if they hadn't used the room in a really long time. We complained about the room and were given another room which looked better than the first room but the standards were exactly the same. The areas behind the bedside cabinet has not seen a hoover in at least 6months and generally the room wasn't dusted even as part of housekeeping after our first night.
We were so disappointed that we even contemplated spending more money to go to another hotel.
On checkout we weren't even asked how our stay was which goes to show they don't care once you've paid your money.
Overall this hotel lacks any standards and is run down but was central to everything. I wouldn't book here again.
Disappointed
HappyEdinburghMumon 01/08/2017 00:19Chose the Fraser Suites as the reviews were very good and we wanted a romantic night away in a hotel in our home city so we wouldn't be far away from the kids (just incase).
Upon arrival we were advised that we were in the Observatory suit, we questioned this as we had requested and had email confirmation that we would be in the Courant Suit. We were told at reception that this suit was unavailable, no reason why, just no.
And the room, well it was very clean and the mattress was firm and comfortable, but the decor was dull, the view OK, wooden furniture chipped and there was cooking smells coming from a restaurant nearby when you opened the window to get some air as there was no air con.
The Buffet Breakfast was good, though the plates were really small and one small piece of butter on a table for two, come on.. I did ask for more and was given another small square of butter so gave up.
For the price, we were quite disappointed and will not recommend to family coming over from Australia.
Good Accommodation
bazzawongon 30/07/2017 14:13Hotel was in a great part of Old Town in Edinburgh. Easily assessable to New Town and just a stone's throw from the Royal Mile. Walk 5 minutes up the hill to Edinburgh Castle, or down 15 minutes to Holyrood Palace. The rooms were clean and modern, but could be a bit bigger. There was practically no space to walk after we opened up our luggages. Right in front of the wardrobe, there was an obtrusive pillar which made walking even more difficult. Overall, a nice hotel but with room for improvement.
Perfectly located!
Craig Mon 29/07/2017 15:13Just off the Royal Mile; central Edinburgh is at your doorstep. The hotel is lovely; well equipped and well staffed. The rooms are clean and comfortable. And being situated on a side street you have the best of proximity with a bit of seclusion. Lovely!
