Perfect weekend getaway from Taipei

nickkembelon 16/05/2017 02:23

As a family with two young children, this made for a great splurge/weekend getaway from where we live in Taipei, a 1.5 hour drive away. You won't get the same value for money as you would in just about anywhere in Southeast Asia, and the beaches in Taiwan aren't as beautiful either, but if you live in Taipei and don't want to travel to the far south for a luxury resort experience, this is an ideal venue. The hotel feels very new and sparkling clean, unlike other similarly priced resorts we've seen in Northern Taiwan. We stayed on Sunday night for significantly cheaper than Friday/Saturday. No wait for check in/out, don't need to tip guy who carried our bags to room, free underground parking, free access to Fulong Beach (normally 100NT for the public), arguably the prettiest beach in Northern Taiwan. The beach is a 5-minute walk from the hotel, and there are no drinks/food available, but 7-11 and several simple eateries are only a 5-minute walk from the hotel near the train station. We were there for the sandcastle competition (mid may to early July), which was truly impressive, and there were even huge sandcastles built inside the hotel. Outdoor kids' water park on ground floor isn't very big but great for very young kids. The swimming pool on the lobby floor has a shallow section with water guns, and a section of swimming lanes, all with mountain (not beach) views. Don't expect many chairs for lounging and enjoying poolside cocktails and a quiet atmosphere like you would in an international resort; in Taiwan the pools are for kids, and the naked/sex segregated hot springs sauna is where adults go to relax, though we didn't have a chance to check out the sauna here. Room itself was lovely; we opted for the cheapest room on the non beach side, and on the cheapest day, but I honestly can't imagine spending more to stay in this hotel. The prices are standard for Taiwan, but if you are spending that much, you might as well fly to the Philippines, Okinawa, or Thailand and get way more options and bang for your buck. The beach facing rooms don't have phenomenal views since the hotel is not directly on the beach, so there are some ugly shacks/low buildings in the view. Hotel staff were very friendly to us and our kids, gave us chocolates at check in (it was Mother's Day), and the breakfast buffet was excellent with lots of choices.

Beachside Hotel

Luxurious hotel overlooking Fulong Beach. Our room was more than adequate with separate living and sleeping rooms and a balcony overlooking the beach.
As our stay was overnight, we did not get to use the facilities provided so cannot comment on these.
Meals were excellent and catered for all tastes.
Staff were friendly and courteous and rooms were clean and comfortable.

Family Unfriendly

Disappointed as quite family unfriendly. The children's pool area and slides have yet to be opened though the hotel has been opened for a year...I was told that it was still undergoing safety checks. Kids playroom was rather lacking/empty and my kids got bored within 10 minutes.

For those with kids, definitely do not recommend visiting here during the winter months starting oct 1st because the pools are closed and there are no facilities for young children. The hot spring area does not allow entry for small children (under 110cm) so I could not take my 5 year olds. As I could not leave my kids behind in the hotel room especially during a "family" vacation, we basically could not use the hot spring facilities.

Five stars room, three stars service

We chose the room type comes with hot spring in the bathroom. The room is spacious and designed very well, I really like the Japanese living room, two big beds, and the rack that you could put two of your luggage on it. It is perfect for a family to enjoy a beach holiday.
Although the beach is not private, very crowded and lacks of service completely, we still had a wonderful time there. You can walk a long way in the ocean, and the water is still shallow and safe for your kids. The wave is big enough to make your kids excited and scream, but not strong enough to endanger them. If the hotel could provide parasols for guests on the beach, it will definitely boost the booking rate.
The hotel built a beautiful swimming pool, but still lacks of service completely. Even worse, the safeguard will whistle loudly to correct guests’ behavior, so rude, you feel like you are in a public pool, not in a pool from a hotel. There is no room service menu in the room, when I asked, the responds was that they only provide fried rice and spaghetti, no need for menu. The house keeping is extremely slow, I called twice in the late afternoon to get new towels and toiletries, and I had to give up the cleaning service due to my family already back from beach in the room. I really don’t understand why the owner spent a lot of money to build such a luxurious hotel but manage to provide such lousy service.

A great place to stay!

We stayed here for a weekend in the off season. The rooms are big and Japanese style (including Japanese toilets). The whole property was very clean and breakfast was included in our package. The breakfast buffet was good with a mix of Western and Chinese foods. Close to other restaurants too. Do rent a bike and ride it through the old train tunnel and along the beach. A must do!
