Charm and Hospitality

My husband and I stayed at the Futrell House for two nights. I called Gary to let him know what time we would be arriving at the B&B. He gave us complete directions and described some local landmarks which made it easy to find. We did see the dog mentioned in another review, but he was playing with the owner's daughter in the backyard and paid no attention to us. The house is spacious and very comfortable. I believe Gary converted it from a historic home into a B&B. He did a great job of selecting appropriate furnishings for the house. Each room is unique. Our room (the Bordeaux) was very large. It was clean and quiet. Gary is a very welcoming host. He entertained us each day at breakfast with his many stories. He and his wife are both from the area so he can offer good travel advice. He is an excellent cook. His breakfasts were hearty and unique: individual breakfast trifles and Indonesian pancakes with coconut/brown sugar syrup. The Futrell House is a perfect location for visiting the Land Between the Lakes Recreational Area and for walking around the charming little community of Cadiz. We left an item behind when we departed. Gary found it and left a message on our home telephone number even before we realized it was missing. He promptly sent it back to us at his own expense. We would definitely return.

Did not stay here

We made a reservation to stay here, based on Trip Advisor reviews. Gary told us he would be away on vacation the weekend we were staying but he would have an innkeeper on property who would take good care of us. Upon arrival, we drove past it -- twice. We called him -- only to learn that there was a FOR SALE sign in the front yard -- and NO SIGNAGE indicating it was a B&B. Upon pulling in, there was also no signage indicating where to park, and we pulled around back (which was not well kept, I will add). We were greeted by a not-friendly dog (and we are dog lovers) -- who was clearly not happy that we were there. Hesitant to get out of the car, we drove to a side parking lot. Still hesitant to get out, we called Gary again -- who told us it was his daughter's dog (so maybe the dog isn't usually there???), was young and nothing to be afraid of though "he does enjoy chasing cars when presented with the opportunity." Gary said the dog was on an electronic collar and had no access to the door we were supposed to go in. We were not comfortable that the dog would not get past the electronic collar -- happens all the time! (Even if we got in safely the 1st time, we were going out for the evening and did not want a 2nd encounter with the dog.)

I spoke with Gary from our car and told him we were not staying. I understand their policy is to charge for the full night if they have held the room. However, I do not feel he held up his end of the agreement for a night's stay at a B&B-- to provide us with a non-threatening enjoyable night. I am willing to pay 1/2 the charge -- and wrote him an email and asked him to split the charge with us. He has refused -- and has charged us the entire fee. I wrote him again -- to tell him I don't feel he upheld his end of the "agreement," -- and he has not responded. (We have stayed at several B&Bs and have been greeted warmly by dogs in the past. We have never encountered a situation such as this -- neither with the dog or complete lack of signage, especially where to park. I do not wish to support this business and am, therefore, writing this review. (He obviously doesn't care -- he's selling the place anyway!)

Great B&B With Superb Service

We enjoyed our visit to Futrell House. Gary was an outstanding host. The home has an interesting history. Renovations have been done tastefully and the place is well kept and very clean. P.S. Gary is a good cook and he uses the freshest eggs (they come from the backyard😉). Thanks Gary!

PASSING THROUGH

From what little we saw of Cadiz, we arrived late and departed early. This was most likely the best choice. My wife had commented to the innkeeper that she did not like runny eggs, so he obliged, but they were over cooked.

A charming B&B!

En route to Land Between the Lakes, we stopped in Cadiz for the night. Gary, our wonderful host, welcomed us in and gave us a tour of the historic homes. Old family photos lined the walls and hot water was on tap in the lobby to make a warm cup of tea. Gary gave us the rundown of places to eat in the area (options were somewhat limited) and we headed off the Lodge for a delicious dinner of fried catfish.
Upon returning to the hotel, we slept soundly for at least 9 hours and were woken to an incredible breakfast of homemade donuts, fresh fruit, and eggs (from the chickens out back) topped with a sun-dried tomato pesto (from tomatoes Gary grew). As great as the meal was, the real treat was getting to chat with Gary as we ate. It was my first time visiting Kentucky (I was there to visit the town my grandpa grew up in) and learned so much about the people, the history and locals politics from Gary. He then gave us detailed recommendations for activities and hikes to do in Land Between the Lakes and where to eat on our way to Memphis. Patti's 1880s Settlement in Grand Rivers is a must see!
I hope to make it back to this lovely B&B again soon!
