What People are saying

Not an enjoyable stay

GracySueon 11/04/2017 22:40

We stayed at the hotel for 5 days. We reserved a king bed room and upon arrival was informed there was no king bed room available for the entire week we were there. Hmmm, really?? The front desk help was rude when we questioned her about our reservation for a king. She made no apologies for the mix up but did give us $10 off when we asked about other options. The hallway outside our room smelled bad (like bo) the entire week. The breakfast buffet was good and housekeeping service very helpful and kind. Towels were Clean and high quality. Be forewarned there are no refrigerators or microwaves in the room and the hotel charges $10/ day to rent one. We probably won't choose to stay here again.

Great College Hotel

I stayed here for a conference event held at Iowa State right down the street. Check in was easy and covered which was nice as it rained both days we were there. Room was comfortable a little dated. I needed a fridge as I bring my meals with me often. They brought one up as rooms don't have one as a rule and was $10/day. Restaurant was good. I sat at the bar and Adam the bartender was very attentive and suggested his favorite meal a steak dish. Was very good and the Iowa Vodka was great. Overall good place to stay in Ames and will stay there again

Couple next door fighting all night!

Bill Hon 28/03/2017 03:42

This was bad from the beginning. Got to the hotel about 9pm....and was told I didn't have a reservation!...booked thru Hotwire. The next 20 minutes was spent calling Hotwire, who then called the hotel and they were told that I in fact did have a prepaid reservation. The clerk at the desk was very nice, and gave me two free breakfast tickets to use the next morning for my inconvenience. The hotel used to be very nice, but it is in bad need of updating, worn carpeting in the elevators, etc. I was given a room with an adjoining door to the next room. I was awakened at 4am to a knockdown brawl going on next door with a guy and his girlfriend. She angry with him because "You went outside and smoked MY weed!"....things being thrown, etc....then he locks himself in the bathroom, and she is banging loudly on the door for him to come out. This went on for 3 hours. Inside their room, outside in the hallway, outside the hotel to their car, back and forth.......finally about 7am they fell asleep.....the desk chair didn't work as far as going up and down, among other things just strange about the layout of the room....I won't be staying again......

Clean hotel, with excellent service, fast WIFI & amazing burgers

Brittany Con 14/03/2017 01:13

I thought this hotel was fantastic, especially for the price:

- Location: I had meetings in Ames and Des Moines, and this location was perfect. The drive into Des Moines is only 30 mins, and it's a straight shot with little traffic.

- Very clean: The building is tired and clearly old, but my room was SPOTLESS. I am a pretty picky person, and this is definitely one of the cleanest hotels I've stayed in.

- Amazing service: The hotel is run by eager, earnest, friendly college kids. They go out of their way to help you, and always do so with a smile on their faces.

- Room Service: I loved their burger. Got it twice in 2 days. Room service was fast, delicious, and reasonably priced.

- Free WIFI: I was traveling on business, and was very pleasantly surprised by the fast (free!) WIFI connection.

If I ever come to this area again, I will definitely stay here.

Nice convention center, decent hotel

Chris Oon 13/03/2017 22:28

This hotel is a few minutes from Iowa State and it is an easy drive if you are visiting. Overall the hotel is a nice and it has had some updates. When I arrived at 3:50 my executive room was not ready and they asked if I would take two queens instead of one king. Based on the write up on the site, I think I was put in a standard room. The hotel was booked solid for our two day convention so I could not switch back. My room was a typical room without a fridge or microwave, however the bathroom appeared to have been revamped in the last 5 years. Unfortunately I was across from the elevator so I had to listen to each time someone used it during the night. The convention side is very nice and was adequately staffed for an event with 350+ people for cocktails and dinner.
