What People are saying

Great hostel with excellent service!

Milo-Duimon 31/08/2017 13:22

Me and my friends had a wonderful stay at this Hostel. We met a lot of people at the bar, which had a great vibe. Unfortunately, due to my fast departure, I left my passport in my hotelroom. A employee, named Sandra, took the time to send it towards my home adress in the Netherlands (after she got confirmation that it was really me). She even send me a copy via Mail so that I had a back up ID during the time that i wasnt able to use my real passport. Thanks again!

Getting by on the Generator name!

Nobody would stay here if it wasn't part of the Generator family of hostels, and boy will I think twice about staying in any of their other properties after staying at this place! I was in an eight-bed dorm that was fairly clean, but MY GOODNESS were the bathrooms on my level disgusting. Based on the record sheet on the wall (see for yourself) they were only being checked twice a day! That is disgusting! Other hostels I've stayed on this trip have had their bathrooms checked hourly. Needless to stay, there was hair and soap scum all over the bathroom floor every time I visited, and the drains were so clogged that you could be ankle-deep in someone else's dirty bath water (fingers crossed they didn't pee!). The showers themselves were bizarre, spraying water everywhere and impossible to turn on without initially soaking your body with freezing or scalding water in the tiny stall. Similarly, I am only 5'4" and my knees touched the door when I sat on the toilets in their tiny stalls! What is this, a hostel for ants?

Staff at the front desk were rude (I had to wait almost five minutes when I arrived because they were all playing on their phones and chatting, and none even looked up!) and not helpful - I was made to feel stupid for asking about laundry (?) as though I should have magically known it was on the fourth floor and procured my own laundry tokens out of thin air. They were also rude when I requested a late check-out (which is an option you can pay for... I didn't want a freebie!) and I observed them being rude to other guests. Bottled water from the fridges at reception costs €2.30, compared to €1.25 at local convenience stores and gas stations... way to rip off your guests!

The vibe of this hostel also sucked... it was very full of school groups and other groups of rambunctious young teenagers, plus families with small children and senior citizens. Nothing is done to encourage people to meet one another or to help travelers discover Berlin. I went to the bar one evening (during opening hours!) and not only did I not find any other guests, I didn't find anyone working! I awkwardly stood around for a few minutes and then left to do my own thing. I will say that while the location isn't awesome, it's actually pretty easy to get to good bars and restaurants using public transportation, so it's not hard to ditch the empty hostel bar for somewhere more fun.

I'm sure management will comment about how they've taken my feedback seriously and will discuss my comments with the relevant departments, but if you read other TripAdvisor reviews you will see my complaints are nothing new, and have been noted by travelers for the past two years. Generator should drop this place from their collection like a plastic bag of flaming sausages.

So bad that I left early

garbagetmwon 15/08/2017 15:52

Tried to change room or something but the staff was rude and not helpful. You know it´s bad when they don´t offer a solution when you ask to leave early.
The rooms were not cleaned the entire time, the bathrooms looked like I was in Orange is the new black- the mirrors were taken off with all the glue remaining. There are no plugs of use in the rooms so you need a mirror or something to get ready. The hall smells like feet. The food is terrible. My sheets had holes and multiple rips in them. Awful. Stay in the Mitte one.

Don't gooooo

katjabytleron 14/08/2017 19:22

Horrible stay. They don't clean the sheet that covers the mattress so you sleep on top of other people's hair.
See pictures: hair on one of the "clean" beds (i was in the room when the lady changed the pillow case and the other sheet). / Something sticky on top of one pillow. / the trash that they don't pick up. It was there when we arrived and they only cleaned it the second morning we woke up there). / The sign on the door very ironic.
Beds don't have a socket nearby or light, like some normal hostels have.
The showers!!! Omg. A prisoner in my country has better showers. Only ONE of them worked properly in the second floor, which is the only one that has a water mixer instead of the basic temp regulator. Of course it was taken my first night so I had to try all the others. And there is no changing place, you have to be naked with other people, so if you don't mind that...
There were dirty clothes on the side and it took it a day to disappear. Gross. And I could tell the bathrooms were not clean because the paper on the floor stayed there for two days.
There is no kitchen. You "can't" bring outside food. Which is VERY unfair because food is expensive. If i had money i would get a better hotel.
Breakfast was complimentary for the complaints we gave and still sucked. Some bread, ham (or something like that) and cheese, jam, coffee, and then everything else you have to pay extra.
To sum up:
Beds 1/10
Showers -3/10
Breakfast 2/10
Towels are 2 euros but deposit is 4, also expensive. And if you want to exchange it for a clean one (because you paid for it!!) You pay again.
I hated this place. Don't go. Stay far away and go to better hostels.

Not like other Generators. Beware

I often stay in Generator Hostels. They're normally well designed and interesting. A cut above other hostels in their price range. The one in Berlin Mitte is in fact one of the best hostels I've stayed in. Not so the Prenzlauer Berg version. The newest Berlin Generator is just utterly, utterly loveless and all done in the cheapest possible way with no good features what so ever. I was in a private twin room which was ugly, tiny and uncomfortable. I'm 5'2" and the bathroom was a bit of a squeeze for me. It's also incredibly badly soundproofed, you can hear people when they're whispering in the corridor outside, let alone when they're talking, or heaven forbid, being a bit louder. Of course you expect some noise in a hostel, but this is just crazy. The food is absolutely terrible, like what you'd get in a bad Belgian petrol station, the communal areas are ugly and run down and the whole ambience is just like whoever built the place couldn't care less about anything other than just spending the least money possible even if they end up with a terrible hotel - which they really have. It's such a shame when so many of their other places are so well done. It's not even that cheap! The reason it doesn't get one star is that the staff are really friendly and helpful and it's close to the S Bahn, but those are about the only redeeming features. Awful, awful place. Go anywhere but here.
