The staff at the Gideon were as always superb. The small town of Saratoga offers great restaurants with plenty of options in price range. Great location for shopping, eating great food with friendly atmosphere
Lovely Setting in a Park
VacaCouple2014on 01/08/2017 21:48We have not been to this hotel in a while. The porch suite was nice with a lovely glass enclosed porch looking out into the park. Although the windows have screens, you cannot open them. We were pleased with the bed - very comfortable and the room was quiet except for the barking dog above us which we did not appreciate. The shuttle to the Saratoga racetrack is a nice amenity and saves you trying to deal with parking at the track. We enjoyed the room but it could have been cleaner - we found used dental floss in the bathroom on the window sill and it looked like the sink had not been cleaned. The pool which is in the state park and a short walk from the hotel was nice for my husband but the people at the pool check-in were rude. We might consider coming back although we learned that there were only 32 rooms occupied during our stay which was mid racing season and things are very busy so not sure if they could improve.
Historic venue
ilrichon 31/07/2017 16:48This historic hotel situated in Saratoga Srprings park, promises to deliver much but sadly fails on so many fronts.
The good parts are the front desk staff, concierge and bell hops, in particular Mike and David. The sweeping entrance to the hotel is a grand affair, as is the entrance lobby. The hotel shuttle will drop off and pick up from the racetrack and downtown Saratoga Springs (albeit you pay a $20 per day resort fee irrespective of use). SPAC is a short convenient 5-10 min stroll away as are the auto museum, springs and Roosevelt Baths.
Price wise, the hotel is very expensive given the dated room amenities. The bathroom, although historic is small and resembles an institution with its stark white tiling with black borders. The plumbing is also noisy in a 'historic' way! There are several decades of ground in mould which were clearly evident to the naked eye.
Our room was a king size and although spacious, strangely stark. There was a good size dressing area but no full length mirror in the room, which my wife felt was rather odd.
Lighting was romantic at best and although the weather conditions were poor outside, there was little natural daylight entering the room.
The chair and footstool were heavily stained, which is a sad oversight in my opinion. In a building of this age it's obvious that you need to make add ons, such as a/c and by its very nature they tend to be less efficient than purpose built equipment.
A quandary for the owners I would imagine. You probably can't and wouldn't want to knock the building down and start again, so I suspect the only alternative is to keep fixing and adding on but in any case the hotel doesn't warrant the very high room rates that we experienced during track season in July.

Grounds are super maintained. Very professional staff.
Accommodations are perfect! Breakfast was out of this world with choices.
Transportation availability to town is a huge plus!

Staff: Rude, unaware, unprofessional, condescending, dour.
Don't waste your hard-earned money.
It is a real shame, given this hotel's history, that it is in the hands of people who don't seem interested in the business of hospitality.
