What People are saying

Very nice but NO WATER!

NaomiGreenon 27/04/2016 14:58

After roughing it in Cambodia for a few months we decided to treat ourselves to air conditioning for our last few days.

This place was a pleasant surprise. To be honest it doesn't look opened from the street as the foyer is dark & uninviting but when we walked in we were greeted by a table of Russian ladies. We were shown two rooms to choose from - a 'small' room on the ground floor (which was enormous & very nice) and another room on the first floor which had the most gorgeous view of the sea. Needless to say we chose the sea view which was huge, tastefully decorated & had a beautiful bathroom (after travelling I now truly appreciate what a nice bathroom is!).

The pool area is a lost potential as it has an unused bar/restaurant area but understandably left as is due to lack of customers. The pool is kept vey clean & it was nice to go for a dip. Every time we went down there we had the area to ourselves which was also great.

We wanted to stay here for three nights but ended up leaving after just one. We did not know Victory Hill has water issues which leaves the entire area with no water for days at a time. A lot of guest houses in this area have tanks on their roof to avoid this but unfortunately The Golden Rooster does not. No water = no shower and no flushing toilet. We were a little frustrated we weren't even offered anything to help flush the toilet with (I suppose even filling a bucket with water from the pool would've been OK for this?!). It just got really uncomfortable & we had no choice but to leave.

Due to the unpredictable & frequent water outage, if staying in Victory Hill I would strongly suggest to ask if they have water tanks before checking in. I realise The Golden Rooster have no control over the water issues on Victory Hill but they can control the situation by having tanks installed.

Highly recommended

Nice place in Victory hill. Clean and big rooms, balcony was big and we loved pool! Good and cheap breakfast, helpful and nice staff and no problems with wifi!
And of course good drinks in bar, hahah.
And what is the best, you will get nice rooms and place to stay which is not expensive!

Faultless. Unbelievable value for money - highly, highly recommend. We're going back!

What a week of absolute luxury. Sihanoukville seemed fairly expensive so shopped around a little and this place looked really nice for just below the online average cost of a room in Sihanoukville.

We arrived in the evening after dark so it was difficult to appreciate the place straight away - though the room itself was clearly amazing - absolutely huge and spotless with a lovely looking balcony and very, very comfy and HUGE bed. After an early night we woke up and were so, so pleasantly surprised. Amazing sea and island view from the room (could see the Koh Rongs on a clear day), with a view of the port which we loved, cruise ships coming and going every couple of days. Sunset over the island off to the left was a treat every evening. We originally booked to stay for 4 nights but we just couldn't leave, we kept asking for an extra night as the days went on and the owner was very accommodating, (even when the hotel was all but full she managed to organise it so that we could stay in the same room) we ended up staying for 8 nights in the end and loved it so much we're going back in a fortnight after a quick trip around vietnam, and we can't wait.

The breakfast is delicious and good value at $3 for a big cooked breaky and iced coffee served by two very friendly local staff, whose english is good and the girl made an effort to remember our orders the next day in case we wanted the same again, a nice touch.

The location was ideal for us being a couple that wanted to be close enough to get involved with the night scene at serendipity if we fancied it but far enough away to have a quiet one too. it was only $3-$4 in a tuktuk to serendipity, well worth the peace and quiet every so often. The beach was a 10 minute stroll through a little local village sprung up along a pretty steep hill down towards to sea. Though a little litter-ridden, as is common, it was surprisingly really, really nice (towards the pier), with warm, clean water despite the boat activity.

There is a beautiful little italian restaurant just around the corner too called Raphael's Tavern, unbelievable lasagne and cheaper than most other places there.

The one downside to the Victory Hill area, like many others in SEA, is the abundance of disgusting old western men - (especially one man on the beach behaving in a wholly unacceptable way. I really don't want to put anybody off because we loved this place but It is very important that girls are mindful of their safety especially whilst in a bikini on the beach - try to avoid being alone.) But please, please don't be put off by that - it's similar in far too many places unfortunately - just keep safety in numbers and we need to use it as an incentive to go to these places to help show the area that there is an alternative and they can survive and thrive without the need to be exploited, there are far more honest forms of tourism but it only wins out if the honest tourists provide sufficient trade. I feel very strongly about this having been there.

Back to the hotel and I recommend this place to anybody. Lone traveller wanting to treat themselves, a couple (definitely), a family - the rooms are huge and if you wanted two rooms, the two at the back, rooms 7 and 8, share a balcony that would be ideal.

The pool is also lovely. the area around the pool is a bit neglected, there's a building down there that probably used to be a restaurant or bar, that could be a really, really cool space, looking out onto the sea, but it really doesn't taint the pool experience either, it's lovely down there with a fresh, clean pool - unlike others we've experienced in cambodia.

Wifi worked fine in our room, shower was lovely and hot and room cleaned everyday.

Honestly an excellent hotel and unbelievable value for money - the owners and all staff are very, very friendly. We genuinely can't fault the place and can't wait to return!

Nice place with friendly and helpful people!

Big rooms with good prices everything clean (the cleanest we have seen so far traveling in Cambodia) very nice view on the sea, big balcony and there is a swimming pool. It's not directly at the center but that actually also one of the things we liked about it. We had a very nice and quiet stay.

Basic hotel with very helpful staff

Stayed in a king room with balcony that supposedly had sea views. Technically correct but somewhat exaggerated. Room was basic but clean and the wifi worked well. Bed comfortable, shower good but the downside was the barking dogs and cockerels waking us up early morning, also many mosquitoes. Food was reasonable and the price at a little over $30 was high for the area. A long way from a decent beach but very close by are plenty of restaurants and bars.
