What People are saying

A pleasant weekend

Nigel Bon 29/08/2017 19:52

This was our first visit since the upgrade of the entrance and hall area's last week. The new entrance hall was very impressive and was more spacious. We stayed in one of the suite which was clean and well presented, a large comfy bed and a spacious bathroom. The best feature being the large rain shower.
Breakfast was god, enough choice for both of us, the hot food was kept fresh and hot. We had breakfast early to beat the normal last minute rush and this was well worth it.
The pool area was good for a hotel, changing rooms are a little on the small size but this didn't end up being a problem.
One word of warning, try and avoid the rooms over the function room, on all nights the noise from wedding guests was excessive and our sleep was disrupted, not the relaxing weekend we wanted!

Enjoyed our stay, but overpriced

happygirl189on 29/08/2017 10:15

Stayed one night. Immediately surprised that £185 for a basic double room did not include breakfast- which was going to be an extra £15 each!! Shown to our room and it was very pokey so asked if there was anything else. Second room at that price also very disappointing. We were then offered an upgrade, although it was above a wedding party so would be noisy and had a view of a flat metal roof and a wall. We went for the 'upgrade' as the room itself was nice and decided to forget about breakfast.

Went to the spa facilities at about 5.30pm. Had no gown to walk through the hotel with, as is usual elsewhere. Disappointed at first, as our chance to chill out was totally dominated by a lively, loud wedding/ hen group, who also hogged the jacuzzi. Luckily they left after a while and left us in peace. The spa after 6.30pm was lovely and restful.

Went to dinner at the brasserie at 8pm. Good atmosphere, but felt slightly strange sitting at what felt like conservatory furniture in a large, open greenhouse-like room. Had booked Ciro's believing it to be high-end dining compared to Nelson's bar. Given that expectation, I was quite disappointed with the menu- very uninspired. What you would expect at any bog- standard Italian/ 'Mediterranean' bistro. Decided to go classic - ordered a Caesar salad and garlic prawns to start and both had steak with fries for main. Bottle of red.

I must say, the food was absolutely. delicious. The menu might have been a yawn, but the chefs know what they are doing. They got both steaks perfect and even the chips were gorgeous. We had a really enjoyable meal in the end - because of the quality of the cooking.

The service was very good. The bill came to over £80, which I think is steep for 2 courses plus basic wine - no puddings or coffee.

Went to the spa instead of breakfast and then asked at reception where to get a decent breakfast. Advised to try the restaurant at the grosvenor garden centre 2 mins up the road in the direction of Chester. Went there and we were not disappointed !! Had a fabulous, massive full English for half the price of the hotel, fabulous service, happy and friendly atmosphere, busy with local grandparents and families. Thanks for that tip!!!

Giving 4 stars mainly because dinner was great. Decor a bit confused and busy for me, menu uninspired and overpriced, spa fine as long as you go when no one else is there. Overpriced for what it was, so wouldn't go again, but we enjoyed our stay.

Mixed bag

We almost cancelled before going. I was a little frustrated that we had to book one nights stay with the spa reception and then one nights stay with the hotel reception - daft. Then my wife phoned up to book the meals and sent me a text afterwards saying the receptionist was rude and we should cancel. But no refunds on the spa booking so we went. The room was nice, the spa was good, the massage great, the gym poor, the food was ok. We wouldnt go again.

Great hotel right in the middle of the city center

Had a lovely one night stay at this excellent historic hotel. The staff was especially helpful and provided amazing customer service. I felt like a queen at this hotel and highly recommend it. I had a beautiful room at the back of the hotel that was very very quiet so I could get a restful night's sleep. Breakfast in the dining room was delicious. A perfect experience!

Look forward to returning

Upon arrival, I walked into a bar. Quite confusing but there is a separate hotel entrance. Maybe I missed the signage.

The quality of the refurbishment in the reception, restaurant and public areas is incredible. Very impressive and obvious that some money has been reinvested. The outdoor areas and green house are really nice on a summers day and would host a great wedding. Very unique settings.

Room 42, I was greeted with spiral stair cases before reaching my actual room. Different, and very surreal at the time. It was obvious it was a loft conversion due to the slope of the ceiling in the room. Thus interfering with the shower curtain being able to move, in turn creating a wet room.

Nevertheless a great room, very clean and a good nights sleep, followed with a great quality breakfast.

Look forward to returning,
