Outdated motel room
Christhenurse54on 07/06/2017 21:54Very tight fit for even just 2 people! Had to walk sideways to get in and out of the bathroom.. Bathroom fixtures rusting and chrome all peeling off. No hot water unless your un for 5 minutes and you better be one of the first in the morning or you wait longer. Next time, we will try another resort first and check reviews before we book.
Great location, clean room--small but adequate
erikalockwoodon 07/06/2017 06:00The room we had was a short distance up the hill, other rooms seem to be quite a distance--carrying luggage that far might be an issue for older people, or anyone with disabilities. It was a small cabin with a little kitchen, and a tiny bath. Don't plan on making any big meals, but it's great for fixing snacks, heating soup, etc. The refrigerator is pretty small, so don't plan to stock up for a week. Von's grocery is very conveniently just a few doors down. We were within walking distance of everything we wanted to do.
The beds were comfortable. We needed to ask for an extra blanket. The towels were not luxurious by any standard, but were clean.
This is a no frills hotel, absolutely adequate for our needs. The people were very nice too. If you can live with out the luxury, than this is a great place. I would go back again.
Tiny Bargain
CCN6on 07/06/2017 02:01Great location, great price and fantastic staff. Rooms are old but clean. Biggest downside is size... the cottage rooms are incredible small -- like, hard-to-maneuver small (e.g., it's a challenge to shut the bathroom door when you're inside the bathroom.)
Throwback to the good old days
lektra8462on 11/04/2017 19:12Hermosa Hotel and Cottages has been around for decades and is a survivor, having escaped the historic fire of 1915 that destroyed half the town. A short walk from the Catalina Express dock (short if you are pulling not carrying your bags,) it is a funky trip to a slower time. A block from the harbor and no scenic view. Yes, the rooms are old and basic, but clean, and the hot water is plentiful. Staff is young and friendly—especially the adorable puppy who “greets” you. Our cottage was, thankfully, only a short stair climb up a steep hill where they ascend, it seems, to the sky. AC/heater in the room but open windows refreshing. The room had two double beds and a kitchenette with all the appliances, mini fridge and dishes to take care of yourself if you are there on a scuba diving trip. Having a Von's Grocery half a block away (and a Von's Express one street over) insures replenishments--at surprisingly good prices considering it is all "imported" from "the mainland." We arrived well in advance of the check in time but they have a baggage/dive gear luggage room that means you can drop your bags and start exploring. This really came in handy on departure day when checkout was 11 and the boat departed at 430. They have a small wine and beer bar on premises and give you two complimentary chips to get you started. Only open 2 hours a day -- OR whenever you ask (although no one is at the desk overnight.) It was a bit noisy, however it was spring break and several softball teams of teenagers were staying there. But laughter of joy from young people creating lifetime memories, is NOT traffic noise--just takes you back to when you were young! An added bonus is the Hermosa is next to the Catalina Museum which showcases the island's storied history, which is CENTURIES long. Dale Chihuly's astounding blown glass exhibition, which will be there until June, is breathtaking. All in all it was a great experience that really took me back to my FIRST trip when I arrived by CATALINA SEAPLANES! Catalina, packs so much history into a small space, especially meeting all the people born there who are "advanced" in age but still young in spirit and working in retail and tours to make visitors' stay memorable. Highly recommend scenic tour with Miss Becky and the ZIP LINE where Lorenzo (another native) and Kyle provided thrills and lots of information about the delicate and unique eco system. A lovely, busy yet relaxing two nights and three days courtesy of a Groupon Deal (round trip boat trip and botanical gardens included.) If you are feeling more "hip" than "haute" this is a perfect place to catch up with your youth.
Great place to stay!
Ramya08on 03/04/2017 18:52We were upgraded to a cottage room as we booked the room along with the Catalina express from LA as a combo and it was also a weekday. The staff was very friendly and suggested us a few places to go around. The room was very clean and tidy. It also had a small kitchen to cook our own food. The place is a walkable distance to the boat, downtown and everywhere you want to visit on the island. My only complaint was the night we stayed there, the winds were very strong so I could hear a few neighboring windows banging which freaked me out a little. Apart from that, it was a great stay, enjoyed my visit and would definitely consider staying here again on my next visit.
