What People are saying

Great staff

mikecoliverwaleson 15/08/2017 18:34

Great staff, great location. We had a club meet there, so had a set meal, followed by entertainment. Hotel is an ex Travel lodge I believe. A little tired around the edges. But all in all a great couple of days there. Breakfast was excellent as was the evening meals. Staff couldn't do enough for you.

Good value stay with minor issues

Stayed here at the weekend for Saturday night. I booked via the hotels own website which had the cheapest rates for dinner, bed and breakfast.
When we arrived it was obvious there was a wedding party, however reception was not busy, and we were checked in quickly by the member of staff.
Reception was bright and light and very clean. We were directed to our room, which was a lovely surprise! It was at the back of the hotel so views onto the fields behind rather than the main road, and a massive size compared to the normal budget chain hotels.
The room was clean and tidy, had a lovely queen sized bed and massive en suite with shower over bath. The room could do with modernisation but was functional and clean. The best we could ask for. We had booked at reception for dinner as we were told the wedding meant it was busy.
When we arrived for dinner the restaurant was empty, however the barman (John) sat us and took our orders. The food we ordered unfortunately was not all we hoped for, a burger with different toppings than advertised and a mixed grill with items swapped and missing made for two rather unhappy diners. The waiter gave the explanation that the chef was not ordering in items as the menu was due to change. This was not mentioned before we ordered, nor when the meals arrived. We spoke to the manager who was obviously very busy due to the wedding who said he would take the meals from our bill as we were not satisfied and gave us free drinks. At this point the barman was run off his feet and obviously required more staff on, an oversight by the managers I would presume, and no fault of the staff themselves that service was slow. We took our drinks to our room and enjoyed the rest of the stay, there was wedding noise until about 11pm but not to keep us up.
Breakfast the next morning had all the components but nothing exciting, the meat and cheese options slightly disappointing but a range of cereals, fresh bread and cooked options were all good considering the hotel is a budget option. We were lucky with the time we went for breakfast as any later and after the wedding party there was a massive cue and the kitchen looked to be struggling with demand for cooked choices.
On check out the reception staff were lovely, and had no issue with taking the dinner cost off of the stay.
Overall a few issues which in my opinion were due to being understaffed and nothing else, we would happily stay again for the cost and the good standard of room we received.

Did we under pay??

I think 'value for money' is an understatment.

We were very pleased with everything about the Citrus Hotel Coventry and if we ever go back to the Warwickshire region to stay then we'll be booking here again.

A special shout out to Leane. She was very helpful at the time of booking, when we arrived, and at the time of departure. Thank you

Highly recommended 👍

Great staff, hotel needs a refurb

Stayed here for 1 night whilst in the area on business. The hotel was previously a Holiday Inn and I stayed whilst it was under that banner a year ago.
The rooms are spacious and clean, all staff are friendly and helpful. The meals I had which were from the bar menu(evening) and breakfast were fine and fairly priced.
What lets the hotel down is its overall decor which is looking tired and dated. Everywhere is in need of a good facelift.
The staff deserve the owners investing in this facelift to match their friendly helpful attitudes.

In need of serious improvement

We stayed for two nights while my husband had some business in the area. Other than being in a convenient location, there wasn't much that could be said for this hotel. Our room was surprisingly spacious, but in real need of updating, and not particularly clean. The carpet was stained and you could tell that the room had at some point had people smoking in there, the plastics were stained and it didn't smell great. The bathroom at least looked clean, although the grout on the floor was heavily stained.

The TV was useless, kept turning off after 15 minutes and when I raised it at reception the staff member told me that she had already moved one tv from an upstairs room for someone else that night, and that I should try wiggling the aerial. No further solution was offered so We just put up with it. Not great when I was spending the entire second day there as my husband was using the car and the hotel location meant that I couldn't walk anywhere. On the first night, we ate in the hotel lounge area and the food was pretty good, a couple of burgers and we didn't have to wait long.

On the second day, the fire alarm went off early morning, (can't be helped of course), but then the phone kept ringing in our room, nobody on the line when I picked it up, so not sure if that was a fault with the phone.

We decided to eat in the hotel restaurant on this occasion, and we were the only people in there bar another couple who arrived shortly after us. We placed our order first, however an hour later the other couple had their meal and still ours had not arrived. In the mean time, a large party had arrived for a function, and when their food started coming out to them, the young lady who was waitressing that evening came to apologise and told us that our food would be a while still. We had clearly been forgotten! She assured us that the meal and our drinks would be complimentary and apologised, and she did seem genuinely sorry. When the food arrived it was not anything like what was described on the menu, but as we had waited over an hour by this point we didn't complain as we were so hungry. If we had been paying for the meal I would have been even more disappointed!

That waitress was the only staff member in the hotel that showed any interest at all in ensuring we enjoyed our stay, and she was the one saving grace. On checkout, the member of staff at reception did not ask how our stay had been, and didn't take the room key back in, luckily I remembered it was in my pocket when we were about to leave. I had intended to raise these issues with reception, but they clearly weren't interested so I didn't see the point. We went to get a bottle of water from the vending machine, and the machine took our money but didn't dispense anything... went to the bar and spoke to the same waitress from the previous evening who went to reception and got our money back, and to her credit once again she gave us two bottles of water free. I feel that she really was trying her best and she seemed embarrassed that we had had such a poor experience during our stay.
The rooms were dated and not particularly clean(there's a reason only the 'executive room' is pictured on trip advisor! Meant to take photos but just wanted to leave), the staff (other than the waitress mentioned) were disinterested almost to the point of rudeness, and the food was expensive and not as described in the menu.
It is a convenient location, and not particularly expensive, but I feel it is not worth the money that we paid, and if we had paid the advertised price of £145 per night we would have walked out there and then. We considered leaving after the first night, but couldn't find anywhere else to stay.
