What People are saying

This is the place to eat in this magical town

Pinkhillon 28/08/2017 08:26

We were there for lunch on a lovely sunny Monday. We had a table outdoors which was excellent. A very good lunch served in a friendly fashion. A busy restaurant which is always a good sign. The food was good washed down with a Bavarian beer. Nice friendly staff and reasonable prices.

Interesting Village Nice Hotel

Our group spent the night here on our tour of Germany. We also had supper and breakfast here. While we were here we walked around the town and shopped in some of the shops. It is a very nice place and we were very comfortable here. The rooms were spartan, but comfortable in spite of the lack of air-conditioning. We did have a fan in the room which we used in the night with our window open. This is the village that does the Passion Play as a promise to God made many years ago. The shops were fun to go through and they had some interesting things to look at and buy. We went on a walk in the evening. One of the stops we made was in a cemetery where the grave sites were very well tended gardens. Another point of interest in the village were the houses that were decorated with art and murals. Two of the homes were of particular interest, one decorated with the Red Riding Hood story and another decorated with the Hansel and Gretel story. Very interesting indeed!!!

Excellent Bavarian food

We had the Bavarian platter of sausages and roast pork as well as a plate of roast pork. My fussy eater 5 year old walloped everything on her plate in record time! We also tried the Ettaler dark beer. We are not usually fans of beer, but this was good.

management refused cancellation of our second night

unclepaullon 30/07/2017 21:29

I had stayed here with my wife 30 years ago, sandwiched to stay again at the end of our month-long celebration trip for a big anniversary. We were booked into room 49, at 135 euros per night with breakfast. This I considered a reasonable arrangement all round. There is free parking behind the hotel. We arrived and were met by a charming fraulein at reception. Our room had a brand new bathroom ( nice!), though the room itself had not been lavished such attention. We found the beds( 2 singles shoved together) to be extremely uncomfortable, and pillows were impossible to get a copy sleep on. There was a small balcony with table and chairs off the room.
Since we had a flight from Munich airport on departure, and had found lots of works and delays on the airport road on our arrival, we were concerned about the lengthy drive from Oberammergau to the airport and being able to catch the plane. We therefore decided next morning to cancel our second night, and drive up directly to Munich ( to the excellent Opera Hotel) for our last night to be sure of timings the day of departure. We were totally shocked when the hotel manager refused point blank to allow us to cancel, even though we had already stayed a night in his hotel. When pushed and shamed into some sort of action, he grudgingly allowed 27 euros off our total bill. He had no sympathy or consideration of client situation. That should be a clear lesson to all who think to stay in this hotel. The management has NO interest in you other than your money, and evinces an image that would shame their profession and their community. There are numerous other very quaint and pleasing hotels in the centre of Oberammergau, and the wise traveller would do well to heed this sad story and use one of them instead of Alte Post.

Such a lovely place to stay!

This is a wonderful place to stay - right in the middle of Oberammergau, very friendly staff, lovely rooms, great food - what else can you ask? I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here and the experience at this hotel made it all the better.
