beautifully located hotel
academy506on 20/06/2017 09:40The Plataan is very nicely located directly in the city center of Delft. It's differently decorated rooms are lovely. The breakfast was really delicious and the staff very nice. I would recommend this hotel when staying in Delft.
Good location, comfy room, great breakfast
Belmarmomon 05/06/2017 18:33Our family of 3 enjoyed our stay over Whitsunday weekend. The staff was helpful and the homemade breakfast buffet was delicious. We didn't do a themed room, but ours was recently renovated, clean and comfortable. Adjustable beds are a nice touch. It helped having an elevator/lift to get to the 3rd (4th in US). It was a bit warm at night even with the window open, though. The location is a 10-15 minute walk from the train station and 5 minutes or less from the main town square. There's a small tree shaded square right outside with several bars/cafes with outdoor seating, but things are quiet at night.
Exotic stay in winter
Sharon Mon 15/05/2017 11:57Really enjoyed my stay in an environmentally friendly hotel. The staff is really friendly and accommodating.
Easily changed their menu to include my gluten free dietary.
The rooms are all different with exciting themes which are attractive in an unusual way, makes you forget all your worries and just enjoy the stay. My room had a jacuzzi, helped me relax after my long flight from Africa.
Centrally located, with close proximity to the station, restaurants and shops.
least liked hotel I've stayed in, but the staff deserve a star
WageandBaboon 07/05/2017 05:45This hotel is not for everyone, and I knew that it was not for me or my family's taste but we were staying as part of a tour group here. If you like themed rooms with kitschy decor and lots of painted walls, and don't mind the "eco excuse" of hotels lately to not wash towels or clean much of anything, then maybe you will like this place.
The room I stayed in had a persistent smell- like a smell of a bathroom- perhaps because there is a jacuzzi tub in the room. The theme rooms require an additional fee to 'upgrade' because they have features that in my opinion are not really wanted by customers. So I think there is a disconnect in that the hotel operators think customers want suntan lamps in the shower and jacuzzis in the room, and a remote control to angle the bed up and down. I do not think travellers go to Delft looking for these features, and I'd rather put my money towards cleaner rooms with more practical details like hooks and tables to put my belongings off the floor.
What really bothered me is that with the "themed" rooms the walls and furniture surfaces are painted, and it doesn't feel "clean". (This is somewhat psychological but also could be actual.) The rooms were not vacuumed and the tables felt sticky. The top floor is difficult because the lift does not reach it, and you have to get out and walk a spiral staircase that has a trip hazard (the black ledge below the first step nearly caused me to fall) and then the last four steps leading to the double doors are not evenly spaced in height so if you are not expecting it, they are an uneven climb.
But the dust in the room was pretty bad: the theme decor in our room had a canopy over the bed that was very dusty, and since all the surfaces are painted either it's the paint on the walls or the surfaces felt sticky. The themed chair was uncomfortable and I couldn't sit in it without fear it would break. And there was no closet (so there's a painted cabinet with African looking artifacts but there is no functional closet) and a very grubby looking guestbook. The sheets smelled as though they needed to use more laundry detergent when washed. I would run and renovate my own hotel very differently, but I have the impression the owner wanted a way to express his/her art all over the walls and have those added features (the sunshower and angle-up/down bed controls) rather than clean and restful feeling interiors.
Our room had an African looking statue behind the door: it appears to have taken a beating from the door. I covered it with the bedspread at night to avoid it scaring me while I barely slept.
I wish the door locks would be replaced: we worried about being locked out and one morning I was almost unable to lock the door as I was leaving since the door lock did not fit very well with the lock frame (so the door needs to be rehung or refitted).
The saving grace of this hotel is that the staff is very kind and I cannot give details but one of the staff did us a great kindness when one of us was sick during our stay and we are most grateful. The other thing we appreciated was the breakfast food felt very wholesome, not prepackaged typical processed food. For these reasons I felt the hotel deserved at least a couple stars. The location is good and I enjoyed the rooftop view of Delft and hearing the bells.
The hippie/DIY/amateurish design and the impression the hotel was not very clean left me very uncomfortable, but perhaps other travellers will like it.
The worst hotel I have ever stayed in
gailienon 03/05/2017 19:54We checked into a dreary dark dusty room covered in cow hide. Felt like we were in an oubliette as the windows were up by the ceiling. It was horrible and had a horrible smell to it (it could have been the skins everywhere but it was a nasty smell) and I asked to move rooms as I was so unhappy. The next room was the similar but decorated slightly better with no smell and no cow skins. Still the windows were up by the ceiling and there was a plastic cow on the metal structure outside the window which was weird. There was also a picture painted on the wall showing the food cycle of animals which to be honest was quite sick if you think about it too much. Also during the night the barrier from the side of the top bunk fell off when my daughter was sleeping in it, good job my daughter didn't fall out of bed too as she would probably have died with all the sharp corners below. Ruined our holiday we were supposed to stay for 3 nights but after the first night we moved to a different hotel because it was making us all so miserable. Paid 300 euros up front and weren't offered a refund or any form of compensation, the receptionist said the owners would contact us but they didn't. Check you are happy with your room before handing over any money, just glad we hadn't paid for the 3rd night up front too!! I have never felt so miserable about a hotel ever before and I have stayed in a lot of places in a lot of countries. Avoid..
