What People are saying

Great hotel and some superb food reasonably priced

Whilst attending the KSK symposium we staid in on his little town and tried out the hotel Kloster Hirsau. What a great place with some traditional elements. Food was excellent, served in a homely environment with fresh ingredients and reasonably priced. The staff are friendly and helpful. Definitely one to recommend.

Good hotel

Stayed here for an overnight trip on our way down to Austria. Easy to find in the small hamlet, and setting was very nice. Hotel quite large, but is in the middle of a town with nothing in, we took a stroll around and could see nothing open it was a very sleepy village but nice scenery. Check in swift and simple, room large and beautifully clean, a little dated but spotless and very nice. Good facilities in room.
Ate dinner here, and food marvellous, service exemplary and thoroughly enjoyed our evening sat outside eating and drinking.
Breakfast was typical continental, which I always struggle with and there was limited cereal choice, but lots of meats and cheese if you enjoy that.
Great little base for overnight

Mixed Feelings

Stayed here for 3 nights with friends. The hotel is located in Hirsau, a village a few miles outside Calw. Unfortunately, the hotel is located on a traffic island, so the rooms do suffer from road noise. A problem if you are a light sleeper.

The staff are very friendly and most speak English. The waitresses wear traditional dresses, which is a nice touch Shame that the lady owner chooses to wear jeans.

Rooms are a good size, but perhaps a little dated. Everything was spotlessly clean. They do not have air conditioning.

We ate in the restaurant two of our nights and very much enjoyed the meals and service. There is an extensive menu and everything we tried was very flavoursome. On our last night (Sunday) we decided to eat elsewhere and got back to the hotel at about 22.15 hours only to find that is was locked and no staff were present. Thankfully we had kept our key, but our friends had not and could not access their room. There was a sign on the front door asking guests to telephone to get their keys. That was fine providing you could read German, had a mobile phone with you and you knew the dialling code for Germany. Otherwise you were locked out! Thankfully we managed to contact the management and we did not have to share a room for the night. But beware if you come back late to the hotel.

Generally a good stay, but it could have been better.

Great Base to explore the area

Do not be put off by your possible initial thoughts on arrival. This is a typical family owned German hotel. My wife and I stayed 3 nights and had a pretty good time overall. There are some good points and some not so good points. Let me start with the good points. The food in the restaurant is very nice. Well cooked with good portions and a nice selection. The rooms are warm and typical hotel rooms with nice modern bathrooms. The staff were all friendly and helpful and as my German is somewhat lacking most spoke English, thankfully!!. The pool and sauna were never busy during our visit. For international travelers remember you are in Germany so no clothes or swimwear allowed in the Sauna!! We utilised the free WiFi in our room to gather inforation about the surrounding area. There is plenty of FREE car parking spaces and the hotel is well located just a few km from Calw.
On the downside, typical of this type of hotel in Germany, no ability to have tea of coffee in your room; no iron or ironing board in room or available for guest use, a real pain when clothes are creased from travelling. The shag pile carpet in the room is not ideal. The 'gym' is very uninviting and my wife felt the pool was too cold. Again typical of the hotel type there is no 'guest lounge' where residents can get a drink and the bar closes when the restaurant closes so no late night drinking after a day out.We did not find any alternatives in the immediate vicinity to eat other than the hotel so you need to travel 10-15 Km for a change. Would recommend the Wildbad Hof in Bad Wildbad about 30 minute drive away.
The hotel backs onto the old Monastery ruins and is well worth a look around as is a simple walk around the village.
Overall we had a great stay but little things could have made it much better

A big cheat! 3 examples for attempted fraud.

I stayed at this hotel now for the third time, 6 years ago, 4 years ago and now. We have a family event there every 2 years, with 60+ people of which maybe 20 stay at the hotel.
The first instance started with the reservation when the staff PP, the same as in previous years, tried to charge me an even higher rate than what the hotel publishes on the internet. I expressed my surprise, the director apologised and offered the internet rate. The fact that PP is doing this for at least 6 years, every day, makes it highly unlikely that it was a mistake. The fact that PP has no advantage of a higher rate makes it likely that it is done with explicit agreement by the directors.
The second instance was on the first day when we ordered food that never arrived. However, we were charged for it. Upon unpleasant discussions between my wife and the waiting staff, they realised the mistake and took it off the bill. Another attempt....
The third instance was the departure when the director/ owner tried to charge me for drinks we never had. The explanation was: These things were still open at your table, everyone else has paid meanwhile, so we charge it to you. Amazing logic! There were 12 people at our table and more between and after courses.
Next would be the quality of food. We decided to have a set menu and buffet for the main dishes rather than a la carte, in order to minimise the chance of disappointment and to enable people to eat more or less at the same time. The soup and the dessert were acceptable, thats the good news. However, three people at my table, who had the trout for main dish, mentioned independently that the trout was very hard! When I brought that to the attention of the serving staff (which happened to be the managers, as I found out) I was met with denial and the manager pulled out a fillet from the bottom, which had been soaking in the sauce longest, to demonstrate how soft it was. Another cheat!
On both occasions when we ate the restaurant, no-one (12 people) had anything in their glasses for 30-45 minutes. The waiters were busy with other things, chatting behind the bar, for example, ignoring us.
All in all a great disappointment; there is no relaxation. One has to constantly pay attention in order to either order, get what you ordered or not pay what you didn't order/ ordered but never got.
