What People are saying
Less than meets the eye.
GranPenaon 16/06/2017 04:29The grounds are charming and the old building is maintained in great shape. In full daylight, the decor of the rooms take you back to a time long forgotten. But as a hotel converted from a colonial monastery, amenities are less than what you'd expect a hotel in it's price range (rack rate.) There's really no place in the bathroom to put your toiletries while you're getting. There's a jerry-rigged shower head over the middle of a "Victorian" style tub. It does the job but for a big person it's awkward.
The room is long and narrow. There's barely enough room for a double bed and two night tables. There's a desk but it's so low, I can't get my legs under it.
During the day, it's bright and cheery but when the sun goes down, the three table lamps are not quite adequate.
I have had lunch and dinner here. The fixings are excellent but the preparation leaves something to be desired.
Prices seem high but looking at other hotel listings, choice seems to be quite limited. The city is a great cultural attraction. It might be a better choice to stay in a more modern town and make Chichicastenango a day trip.
A travel standard disproven
Okopieon 13/06/2017 05:14We stopped and had lunch here. I've traveled to many countries and my standby is always toasted cheese sandwiches if there is nothing else on the menu. This time, my friend ordered one and it was awful - weird ham (I think), weird lettuce and bright orange cheese. This was after waiting for 40 minutes watching as a few other tables came in after us and got their food first.
Note the manager was charming before we ordered and really tried to accommodate us. Why our simple food took so long was a mystery...but while waiting she did an awesome job of explaining the Mayan cemetery.
A Visit to the Past...
Melissa Son 05/06/2017 23:45This hotel is very unique; it is certainly a visit to the past. Every piece of furniture in the rooms and throughout the hotel grounds are antiques. Since the hotel is so close to the market, it can be very loud so try to avoid those rooms in the first floor and next to the market. Our room had very nice views and a beautiful fireplace. The beds are small, but remember this isn't your typical hotel. The bathrooms are also old, but clean and you will have to wait a few minutes for hot water. My husband had the best steak at this hotel. The hotel staff is very nice and accommodating.
Beautiful hotel and grounds
jessica_steedon 01/06/2017 22:07This is a great place to stay in Chichicastenango and very reasonably priced. The breakfast alone was worth the money we spent on the room. The hotel grounds are large with many plants and statues as well as an area for birds. Beautiful.
Like a romance novel from the 1800s
platafamilyvactioneron 31/05/2017 03:36Set in the edge of the Chichicastenango market, within a block or two of the must see local graveyard. Go on a Sunday, thousands of the indigenous Mayan K'iche come from the surrounding hamlets to share their goods and provide a kaleidoscope of color for the occasional tourist. This is as authentic as Guatemala gets.
Each room is assigned a personal manservant, mine - Manuel - was my waiter and room attendant, the push of a buzzer near the bed and Manuel was at the door, to light a fire in the fireplace or to assist in any way,
The town was one of the sites of the 1935 Edgar Rice Burroughs filmed serial: The New Adventures of Tarzan.
Close your eyes and you can imagine Herman Brix, walking the halls after a long day of filming. Little has changed since then. Highly recommended.
