Looks lovely but found it very hot and noisy as we were situated to the side of the main entrance. We were disappointed in the food choices though may appeal to others. However, the spa was wonderful and the therapist very accommodating. Car parking not easy.

Good choice

Definitely a great choice. Romantic ambiente, big clean rooms with comfortable beds, quite and well equipped (fridge, hair dryer, coffee maker, rain shower, etc).
In very good condition, probabky fresh renovated.
Free parking, free WiFi.
Only negativ - our room was too far away for the WiFi and in the town there is not much to do.

Nice "historical" hotel, but needs some improvement

I was presented this hotel for a stay in Jaen (23 km away), and I was fascinated by its "ancient" looking. Actually, the hotel is in a historical palace in this small village, and its charme is without any doubt... fascinating.
I am satisfied by my stay, but some aspects could be improved.
The rooms need some renewals (the window did not close well, the walls were rather shabby, the towels and sheets were definitively old), the SPA was not clean, a part was not working, and there was an additional fee to pay. Anyway, the worst thing is that pidgeons, well... left their traces practically everywhere.
Finally, WiFi was not working for a long time.

Charming hotel, great value for money

Just stayed one night at the Palacio de Mengibar as a stop on a long drive from Tarifa to Barcelona. Booked online and got an upgraded room for $70 on hotels.com. Don't know if we were the only guests but the place seemed empty and was dead quiet. The room (room 1) was really nice, with a fantastic bathroom and marble tub. The hotel is in a small 'palace' from the 15th century and kept in very good condition. The old town center is sleepy and nothing like the more touristy villages in Andalusia. All in all a good experience.

Mixed feelings

On the one hand, we really liked the place. This is a good combination of authenticity and modern touch in a way I like it, i.e. when exterior & interior are all historical while appliances and fittings are modern and high quality. Really like their bathroom with a window. Beds are really comfortable. Location is perfect, right in the centre. There is a private free parking that is essential for travellers like us - we were driving around the province of Jaen visiting various places. This might be also a good alternative to staying in Jaen as it seems more attractive than the places in the city. Also very convenient for visiting Banos de Ensina that is just 20 minutes away.

On the other hand, and this might be probably due to high expectations.... when one reads "Palacio", one starts to imagine things:))) Moreover, description on Bookings.com was so sexy! Trying to be more objective, though.. Wifi is there and free but works badly. Bar service in the evening could have been much better - there was just one guy attending to all guests and the hotel was fully booked. I do not think this is the problem of that guy who was running around like hell rather that of the hotel management trying to save costs. Breakfast is, frankly, dismal, for a 4 star place. The staff was really friendly and helpful, the only problem is that they do not speak any language except Spanish. There was some very-very basic English but obviously not enough for clarifying those many details one usually needs. Again, one might think that there is no point speaking any foreign language in the middle of Spain where most guests are Spanish themselves. But, based on my observations on that trip around Jaen province and specifically at Mengibar Palacio, I could say that approximately a third of visitors were from other countries. And most of them were struggling in most places because of the language.
