What People are saying

Riffelhaus Hotel

whinaemon 01/05/2017 17:28

Location
Perfect access to/ from slopes. Easy access to Zermatt by train or gondola. Spectacular view of mountains from terrace, lounge and dining room.

Rooms
Excellent cupboard space, large bed, good work table, and good view to Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn.
Good spacious bathroom.

Service
The well managed staff were excellent, friendly and went out of their way to be helpful.

Food
Breakfast was a good spread.
Dinner was 4 courses of interesting and well prepared items. The first course was fairly large and would, perhaps, be better as a light soup, giving the option to fill up on the second course which was a buffet with a wide choice of interesting dishes.
Wine list was a good range of Swiss wines.
Dining room is beautifully designed and decorated and has amazing views. Lounge, corridor and dining room had lovely photos, documents and paintings of local historical interest.

Ski Room
On main floor and easy access to/ from slopes. Boot warmers, excellent.

Truly Unique Alpine Experience; Best Views in Zermatt

Tom Bon 19/04/2017 13:35

There are certain places in skiing that are simply unique--Alta (including Collins Grill), Vail back bowls, Whistler Peak Chair, bullet trains from Tokyo to mountain train stations with gondolas inside the station. I am adding Riffelhaus 1853 to my list. This small Zermatt hotel is located at the top of the Riffelberg Express Gondola at 8000+ feet. You reach it by the Gornergrat train which starts right next to the Zermatt main station. The hotel is quaint, very comfortable, full of history and more than ski-in ski-out. It sits alone on the mountain above Zermatt. The views are 360 degrees, unobstructed Swiss Alps. The Matterhorn fills your vision. While the busy, touristy village sleeps in the shadows below, you watch the sun first touch the mountains in the morning. You will get first tracks. When the ski lifts close, the surroundings become wilderness quiet. The rooms are beautiful, simple and Swiss. Your stay includes half board, with a simple, hearty breakfast buffet (the fresh, warm bread was the highlight) and a four course meal at night. I would rate the food as consistently "good" with a few dishes very good. My steak and a seafood salad were excellent,. The view from the dining room will take your breath away. Raymond, the owner, is a welcoming, smiling man. His staff is efficient. You can easily navigate from here to all of the various areas of Zermatt's skiing. Some of it is right out the front door. If you are looking for a luxury, loud, chic hotel in a bustling village, this is not your place. If you are looking for a unique alpine experience in one of the most beautiful places in the world, then you should try this. Raymond told me he does leave for holidays, but then returns to this paradise. I see his point.

Nice hotel to stay with view on Matterhorn

If you want to experience a nice evening up in the mountains for staying over during the night or having a dine and watch the sun go down - this is where you go.
Take the Gornegrat Bahn up the mountain and get off the stop where the hotel is located. You will enjoy a great meal and as well see an incredible mountain panorama ( 28 mountains above 4000 meters).

Just perfect

Having never visited Zermatt we stayed with the family for 8 incredible days of skiing and could not have been happier with our choice of hotel. The location is unbeatable with direct access to the slopes and wonderful views of Matterhorn. What really made the stay special was the restaurant with a great breakfast and excellent set of menus for dinner. The chef was amazingly friendly and flexible, every day asking the children what they would like to eat that evening. We will definitely be coming back next year!

Best relax

We stayed only for one night in Riffelhaus in January. Hotel is very nice, at a high altitude. Complete relax and amazing views in the morning, like nowhere else. New and very nice SPA. Such a calm and peaceful place. We will come back next year for more days. Good breakfast.

The only negative point that when we checked in after skiing all day, even though it was after 4 pm we had to wait for our room to be ready, we got into our room around 4:30. so we waited like 15-20 mins, which was long in ski closes when the only thing you want is a shower.
