Just missing the air conditioning .....
roctoureron 27/07/2016 05:03Our group of three stayed one night. Unfortunately, this was during some hot weather and the lack of AC significantly detracted from what would have made it a great stop over. As were were driving, the distance from the city centre was no issue -- in fact, from the hotel, it is a straight shot to the Porta Nigra. There is free public parking near the hotel, and, if you are lucky, you can park right across from the front door.
The hotel is located on a busy road. However, the sound insulation is spectacular -- with the windows closed, one hears nothing even in a room in the front of the building. But, the heat required us to open the windows and the traffic was loud till around midnight.
The room was quite spacious and the three of us could accommodate ourselves in comfort. Very clean and a modern, spacious bathroom -- nothing to complain about but the pillows which, while looking fluffy, squished down to nothing once one put one's head down! (We just rolled up the duvets and used them as pillows as we had no use for them in the heat.)
The manager/owner is very pleasant and extremely helpful. He takes good care of you and makes sure that your parking is legal! He is also very helpful about restaurants, etc., though we ended up dining at the main square. We did not take breakfast at the hotel.
Apart from the issue of the AC, I would say that this a very good privately owned establishment to stay in. Older building, but updated, with all modern conveniences but for the AC.
It was a restaurant, but it was closed on the night we stayed. In any case, we would have eaten at the city centre as we went out to see the sights in the evening.
Hotel Zur Post: Edwardian Gem In Trier.
Linda Con 22/08/2015 03:02A quaint old city inn called Zur Post looks like something from the turn of the century about one hundred years ago. It displays antiques in the hallways and features a grand carpeted staircase. One can imagine Edwardians staying here and writing to their friends back in England and America about their travels to Trier in Germany to see the Roman ruins. The small hotel offers a restaurant open only for dinner offering late night dining until about midnight. In the morning there was a separate breakfast room. It is close to the French border in Luxembourg. You begin to see French words and dishes such as baguettes. Since it is so old there is no room for parking your car except on the other side of a busy street.
Get a room at the back if you can.
DoeHEADon 26/08/2014 20:30This was a great place to settle after day-tripping around Trier and the Mosel Valley. Our room, in the back of the newer section, was quiet (away from the street noise), clean and comfortable. The manager frequently went out of his way to provide extra help, with information about buses into Trier's Mitte, or about area attractions. He even called ahead, on his own, to one of the nearby castles to ask about their visiting hours. Breakfast was a combination of a wonderfully large buffet and special orders for egg dishes. The attached restaurant, though operated separately from the hotel, has excellent traditional German fare.
The Hotel zur Post is convenient to the freeway, but not near enough to be noisy. It is a quick bus ride to the Zentrum and all its attractions. And it's a fine base from which to explore the beautiful Mosel wine country.
Difficult to find!
Purplepixie48on 14/07/2014 11:29The reason I have dropped to 'very good' is the difficulty in finding the hotel. Although we had printed out instructions we still had to stop 3 times to ask where it was! It is also a long way out of town (not necessarily a bad thing but as we were only staying for 1 night, we never got into the town itself) Having got the negative out of the way, the hotel was very good. Lovely room and accomodating owner. We had a meal in the resturant in the evening which was very nice with friendly serving staff. (I can recommend the schnitzel)
Breakfast was also very good with a big selection of things. They had run out of eggs but when I asked they immediately put some more on and a few minutes later my egg was delivered personally to my table.
Fantastic stopover
Tim Hon 23/06/2014 14:41Stopped here for 1 night on our way further into Germany and Europe, great food in the restaurant very friendly staff and clean comfortable rooms. Breakfast was extremely good with plenty of choice.
Would recommend this hotel to fellow travellers and all staff spoke English which is very helpful.
