We booked this property because my husband was scheduled for a heart procedure at UCSF the following day. We arrived around 10 pm. The parking was free, but very tight.
We were given a room on the 2nd floor. There are no elevators. It was very difficult to climb the stairs with our bag and small ice chest. If I knew there was no elevator, I would not have booked it.
The breakfast was served by the front desk. There were only 2 tables and they were all occupied. The breakfast was a continental breakfast. I just stood and drank my coffee in the small area.
The bed was very soft. The room was clean and fairly large.
This property served our purpose.

The location for this hotel is ideal. We took a Hop On & Hop Off bus with a stop a couple of blocks away on Lombard Street,
Hotel is a little dated and could do with some TLC. But overall rooms were clean, breakfast sufficed us until we found a lunch spot.
Staff were friendly and with a 12:30 a.m. arrival was greeted with a smile and assistance.
Unfortunately we were headed off to a cruise with some heavy luggage and there is no elevator so it was a struggle to get them up the flight of stairs to the room. Our room was located besides the stairs and you could hear the luggage banging on each step as people either went upstairs or down all times of the day.
Road noise was also a factor - very loud all night. But as we live in the country with no traffic it was an issue for us but a city person would probably not even notice.

I was a bit hesitant, based on earlier reviews. I was pleasantly surprised to find a decent, clean room in a great location. There was some unpleasantness the first night we stayed, but not the staff's fault, just some rowdy guests that were no longer a problem for the rest of our stay. The staff was friendly and accomodating and the property might have been old and a bit unsightly but was clean and comfortable, which is really all we needed since we were budget travelers. The internet was a bit spotty, but it worked for my needs. I am not sure what your level of comfort for the price should be, but you are not getting all your needs catered to in a five star level at this property for the price, so you should not expect it, especially in this area. Two blocks either way and you could have gotten a property to give you what you want, for a higher price, obviously. So don't be petty and badmouth a property based on your own inflated entitlement and enjoy yourself!

The HoJo is a nice budget option. The Marina location on Van Ness is ideal for access to the waterfront, dining, shopping and transit routes. There are great restaurants in the area. The rooms were fine - clean and basic. The cleaning solution smell was strong but at least they sanitized the room thoroughly. I could faintly hear the road noise but it wasn't bad. The breakfast was weak but I never expect much from these freebies anyway. I would recommend this motel for those looking for an affordable option in SF.

Overall good stay, nothing fancy but rooms were clean, price was right and decent location, parking is limited and there is some road noise from traffic but I would stay here again
