Bed bug trouble

Tuomas Son 19/06/2017 20:09

Location was really good and interiors looked clean. Hallways and rooms were not in state of disrepair as far as I noticed and check in and out went well. Our room was quite hot but I guess that is expected at this time of year.

However sometimes a nice surface hides a nasty surprise. On our time at least three rooms in fifth floor were reported to have bed bugs. Maybe even more. On our room we found two living individuals on our third night. Some people got relocated to other rooms.

Since the infestation seemed to be quite major and affected multiple rooms I'd recommend to avoid this hostel in near future unless you want to take a chance of having new pets on your return to home :)

Bed bug problem

Lasse Hon 19/06/2017 16:48

I was supposed to stay here 3 nights but checked out after a couple very badly slept hours.

When arriving at late evening in mid-June, our 4-person room on 5th floor was very hot with relatively much noise from outside. There are tram tracks, train, restaurants next to the hostel, and a street of course. On the positive side, I was glad to notice the room had own tidy looking bathroom with a shower. The room also looked quite clean. Lockers for stuff had a practical configurable middle shelf.

The room did not seem to have proper ventilation, just a single exhaust in bathroom. This was sort of compensated by the fact I was not able to fully close the window. Not sure if it was broken, supposed to work like that, or was this more about my incompetence. I decided it wasn't problem, as it would have been a trade-off between even less breathable air or more noise anyway.

When returning to the room around midnight I found a huge bed bug on my pillow, waiting to suck my blood. Soon another one was found from my towel which was on the bed.

The receptionist guy was nice and friendly, but told there was *nothing* he could do at the moment. All rooms were booked. I received a new towel and a free soap, and was asked to come to talk with some manager after 10:00 or so.

My roommates arrived and we started looking and found more bed bugs (on walls and in beds). We felt quite disgusted, and nobody was willing to sleep in the room, so we left to look for a hotel with a free room. No luck. Around 3:00 I felt too exhausted, returned to the hostel and went to sleep with bed bugs. Other guys were not ready to return even then.

The bed was uncomfortable, I could feel springs or something quite badly. High temperature of the room made blanket and bedsheet unnecessary. But I was able to partially sort-of-sleep for about 2.5 hours before amount of bed bugs in the bed was too much. They were also climbing on wall next to me, and ceiling above me.

In morning air quality in the room was confusingly bad even though I had been there alone (well, sort of...) and the window was partially open.

I guess breakfast was kind of OK if it was reasonably priced (I do not know price). When arriving to the buffet I was immediately reminded not to take any food provisions with me when leaving. After eating guests were apparently supposed to wipe tables themselves. Gloves, soap water and rags were provided. Naturally I just had to exercise this rare opportunity.

Then I checked out despite 3 nights were paid beforehand. Hostel staff was nice, but it didn't comfort much after a near completely ruined night and next day. They did offer to wash my laundry for free (a proper thing to do, but didn't really fit my plans at the moment), I received a free lemonade, and some basic instructions about how to deal with bed bugs. Guys in our group found bed bugs from several other rooms too, so this didn't seem to be a random isolated event.

I will never return to this place. Sleeping properly in that room would most likely be challenging to me even without bed bugs.

Bedbugs!!

Toni Pon 19/06/2017 08:42

There were bedbugs in our rooms.

For the next night we got another room from different floor but also there were bedbugs. The second room didn't have own shower or toilet. We got 2 free beers (total value around 2€) from the lobby bar as a compensation.

Good budget hostel with perfect location

Industriepalast is a nice an clean hostel with perfect location. Close to both s- and u-bahn which makes it easy to get around. Walking distance to kreuzberg where there is tons of good restaurants and bars. The breakfast they serve costs 6 euro and I would not recommend it. For the same price you can get a far better breakfast in one of the surrounding cafes or restaurants.

I spent five nights here but the day before I left I did find bed bugs in the dorm. They were really professional, imidiately closed the dorm and assigned me another one. Bed bugs is a problem all hostels have from time to time, no matter what they do to prevent it. So even though the ending of my stay did not go as planned, I still want to recommend Industriepalast  to other travellers. They seemed to have good rutines in the case of bed bugs which I think is a good thing. They were very professional and when something unexpected happens, they take good care of you and provide you the best service possible.

Great place

We had a private twin room on the 5th (top) floor.
The entire venue is very clean, modern, funky.
The room was spacious with private bathroom, in top conditions.
Not one bit of noise may it be during the day or night. (Our room was "far" from the rest though, it may be a different story on one of the middle floors).
The private room was a little expensive for being in a hostel (around 70€/night when we booked a month ago), but after all, No regrets as the value for money is high.
Secured building (need room key to enter at night), reception manned 24/7, staff is friendly and very helpful.
Across the street from U-Bhan station, 100m from east-side gallery, bikes for rent at 10€/day, and everything is reacheable by bike.
WIFI works perfectly in common areas as well as the rooms, and it's free.
Breakfast is 6€/day and quite generous. OK, the juices are awful, let's be honest, but that's really the only thing I can fault about our stay (and I'm just mentioning it to put into perspective the quality of our stay here).
Definitely a place to star on your potential accommodation list when coming to Berlin!
