Terrible Experience - Will Never Stay At this Place AGAIN

vacation_dud3on 21/08/2017 17:28

Finally arrived back after a 3 week stay in Europe and have the time to write my thorough review of this absolutely terrible experience.
My wife and I arrived at the Novum Select Hotel Berlin Ostbahnhof on Aug 1 which was for a stay of 4 nights until Aug 5. We should note that we booked this hotel through expedia.ca and got a more than decent rate
Upon arriving at the hotel, the outside looked as though we were going to be staying in an upscale place. It wasn’t until we got to the room that the problems started. We arrived at night. Walked into our room and it was at least 80 degrees in our room. We were looking all over the room for an A/C switch and sure enough after calling downstairs the place is not equipped. There was a door leading to a balcony but no way for air to flow through the room as there were no other windows in the front. Basically just stagnant air.
I went downstairs to talk to the concierge and he stated that there was nothing he could do. He said there were no fans or anything to provide for guests. We went back up to our room and had our first of 3 cold showers. Woke up about 3 times soaked and could not sleep.
First thing in the morning went downstairs and to speak to management. I asked politely if there was a way we could move to another one of their hotels somewhere else in Berlin. I stated that the room was unbearable due to extreme heat. She stated there was nothing she could do because it was booked through expedia.ca we got great rate. I stated I would be willing to pay extra, or she could charge me for the night we stayed and kindly refund us for the remaining dates. She was willing to do nothing.

I asked for her to call her head office as I wanted to speak to someone there. She went off to her backroom (who knows if she called anyone). Came back and stated there was no one around and gave me their number. I went upstairs and called from my room the number she provided and got some random call center manager. She stated she would call downstairs and resolve the matter.
Went back downstairs and met up with the manager once again. She stated that she talked to the girl and AGAIN stated she could and would do nothing.
We ended up losing our $400, leaving the hotel and going to the Catalnia hotel which was a much better experience.
My wife and I are not picky people, but on a 3 week vacation if you are staying in a hotel that is absolutely unbearable to sleep, why would we stay there? There was nothing in any advertisement that stated that their rooms had no A/C.
Regardless of this, this is horrendous customer service. I work in the service industry and if anyone had issues such as ours we would gladly take care of them. Compromise to make your customers happy and they will take care of you. Why would you risk negative reviews of this nature? I am absolutely disgusted that I spent $400 on a room for 4 nights that sat empty.
I really hope head office speaks to this manager and disciplines her for her actions. Luckily after moving to the Catalonia our stay in Berlin was salvaged.

Lovely spacious apartments

We arrived here quite late and we were met by a very lovely staff member who quickly sorted our room key out so that we could get organised and climb into bed. He told us we had been upgraded and I was super happy with this. We were on the top floor with a huge room... it was more of an apartment than room. A huge bed, two huge windows (which would come in handy), a sofa, a microwave, cutlery and a hob... more bizarrely a shower in the middle of the room.

We really enjoyed our stay here, they had a lovely bar with a friendly barman, a fitness centre, a sauna and an option for breakfast.

Great place

Nice, very clean hotel. The room was big, bed very comfortable, great water pressure in shower (unlike other places we stayed). helpful staff. Unfortunately no good restaurants nearby, but rail station is only 5-7min away from where you get quick access to city center. The breakfast was kind of pricy, but a rail station cafes is a good alternative.Overall, great price-value combination. I would definitely recommend this place.

City Break Hotel

This hotel is ideal for a city break stop over.

Although the hotel is situated out with the centre of Berlin, it is within 200 metres of a railway station. ( 7 minutes to travel to the city ). Unable to find any restaurants nearby but used the cafes in the station for excellent continental breakfasts. ( we did not try the breakfasts in the hotel due to the cost 17.40€)

The staff were helpful and spoke very good English.

The room, on the sixth floor, was large and airy. We were pleased to have a micro wave, kettle and fridge thus enabling us to eat in our room. All was kept spotless.
The location of the shower was interesting! But we had seen this before in China. The bathroom had an excellent range of toiletries.

The hotel bar was not open every night we stayed! However alcohol could be purchased from the supermarket by the hotel.

Would recommend this hotel if you are happy to be a bit self sufficient.

Only an 'OK' stay and arguably more like a 3* hotel than the advertised 4*...

I chose this hotel due to it's close proximity to where I was working and nothing else.. For the purpose I needed it for, it was OK - being only there at night, however if I was in Berlin for leisure purposes, I would have been a bit disappointed..

Positives:

- Large, light, airy room with fairly modern decor, plenty of wardrobe space with decent kitchenette (microwave, hob etc..)
- Easy to walk to, from 'Ostbahnhof' (nearest fairly well connected station)..
- It was fairly quiet and I slept well.
- Near to the river and the remaining parts of the Berlin wall (definitely worthy of a look).
- When open, the bar was good - great barman and drinks not too outrageously expensive.

Negatives:

- Miserable welcome from the receptionist on Sunday night.. The particular gentleman on duty really couldn't be bothered, to be honest.. If I hadn't pre-paid, I would have walked out and stayed elsewhere.
- The neighbourhood was more residential than anything else, so as a tourist you might struggle to find anything to do/see in the immediate vicinity (i.e. just outside the door). There was a lot of construction going on nearby (apartments blocks, etc), so it looked like a fair bit of regeneration was happening. It was very quiet, walking back late at night.
- There was no air conditioning (rare for a 4* hotel) - luckily it wasn't too hot this week. Opening the windows meant you heard people drinking outside in the courtyard.
- There were no tea/coffee making facilities in the room.
- There was no bathroom as such - only the toilet was in a separate room. Therefore, if sharing, you would be showering in full view of your friend/partner - in the strange perspex pod like enclosure.
- The hotel bar is closed on Sunday nights.
- The internet code expired every day, so you needed to keep getting a new code from reception.
