Convenient and friendly hotel near the motorway.

The new hotel part is at the rear of the building with a large car park. The room was quite large and the bathroom well equipped.
The hotel was difficult to find when using internet (kept choosing Limoges or another hotel), but once we got there the welcome was very friendly.
Although dinner was ok (nothing special), breakfast was good with very fresh pastries etc.
Excellent hotel for a stop en route

This hotel is a stone's throw from the A20, but it was peaceful and quiet with no noise form the road at all. The rooms were modern and comfortable. There was free parking and Wi-Fi. The food in the restaurant was superb - locally sourced ingredients cooked to perfection. Staff were friendly and helpful. All in all it would be difficult to think of anything that could be improved.

The room was very uninspiring (beige and dark green). The bed was comfortable. The staff were unfriendly and the food very disappointing. Soggy chips were served with every main course and the choice was not very wide. Bessines is a good stopping off point for the A20 motorway and the village has some shops. The cafe in the town square did a very reasonable traditional French breakfast.
Do not confuse this hotel with reviews of another hotel de France in Limoges

This hotel was a bit difficult for me to locate on trip advisor. I would type in Hotel de France, Bessines-sur-Gartempe, and it kept popping up with a hotel de France in Limoges. I almost didn't realize I was trying to leave a review for the wrong hotel until I read a review about prostitutes in a park!!!!!!
That is NOT this hotel....
This Hotel was in the beautiful village of Bessines-sur-Gartempe. It had an older building on the front half of the property, and a newer modern hotel on the back half.
We pulled in to this town after 30 some hours of travel and were too tired to continue. We were given a room in the new building. No questions asked, no payment required at check-in. The room was large, clean and quiet. It is apparently part of a hotel chain called "inter-hotels".
We were originally going to have dinner in the hotel dining room which is located in the older front half of the property, but it was 5pm, that magic time between lunch and dinner when most restaurants aren't serving food of any kind. The hotel wasn't serving dinner until 7:30pm and we were starving! We starting walking around the village and nothing was open but a small store where I bought some strawberries. We talked to a local who told us about Bar du Lac at etang Sagnac that was a 5 minute drive away.
With our hotel key in hand we drove toward the lake. We found the Bar du Lac located in the Hotel du Lac and had a wonderful 3 course menu with a view of the lake.
We returned to the Hotel de France just about the time dinner was beginning, and fell into the large bed and slept for 10 hours!
In the morning we had showers in the large shower with enough hot water and water pressure to impress anyone. We were going to check out and go find coffee and a pastry because we are not sit down and order a big breakfast kind of people.... But, when we entered we saw that we were confused and what they had to offer was a variety of pastries, fruit, juices, bread etc and not a sit down and order off the menu breakfast. That and spotting the espresso and we quickly changed our mind and had breakfast there. It was right up our alley.
We then checked out and paid our bill and I asked the owners about what else was in this older building and was told it was also a hotel. I'm a bit confused as to how you would actually book a stay in the older building rather than the modern one. Maybe they just assume that road weary one night travelers would prefer the larger quieter modern building to the quaint small rooms in the old building.
Hind site, I would have been interested in seeing the older hotel rooms, but they probably assumed right that we wanted quiet clean large and comfortable vs. older smaller and noisier.
Either way, it was a nice place to stay at a reasonable price and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
Superb stay!

Very good hotel with friendly owners. Food very good and rooms comfortable modern and clean. We were on a trip to and from our holidays, and this hotel is nicely situated from the main highway. Still it is a cosy village with lots to see as well. Also make sure to visit he bakery in the morning. The only minor thing was that the WIFI was not perfect in the whole room. But the chair and bed near the door had perfect free WIFI. All in all a splendid stay!!
