Stunning views but not getting the basics right

My husband and I stayed at the Grandvrio Resort Hotel for 3 nights with two of our friends. The views from the hotel are amazing and you can walk along the waterfront to the lighthouse which was so beautiful to do at sunset.
Check in was easy and straightforward. The rooms are quite dated with a rather uncomfortable bed and pillow (at least by Western standards)! The bathroom had a powerful waterfall shower and a decent sized bath. Breakfast had a good selection but the food quality was average. We ate lunch a couple of times at the on-site restaurant which served pretty tasty Japanese cuisine.
The opening hours of some of the on-site facilities were quite inconvenient. The gift shop, indoor swimming pool, bar and some restaurants tended to shut during core hours such as 12-2pm. We had one day where the weather was a bit rainy and overcast and wanted to spend some time at the hotel but everything was shut. The outdoor swimming pool was quite small for the size of the hotel with only a couple of sun loungers.
We did a snorkeling boat trip to Phantom Island organised through the hotel which was awesome. The water was so crystal clear, it was truly stunning! The tour guides didn't speak any English but that was no issue for us as we really enjoyed the trip regardless.
The hotel definitely has great views of the island but some of the basics are a bit lacking and for that reason we wouldn't stay there again.
Tricked by the room type

The room is not very good. Garden view, but turns out to be 1/F car park view......and 2 single bed, it claimed to fit 2 adults and 2 kids.....
Car park arrangement is poor, a lot of people park everywhere, management should do something....the hotel has 6 car parks for God's sake...
Also, it is not considerate to set a smoking spot right beside the swimming pool and Sun deck....
Breakfast is good, quite a number of variety.
Beautiful Hotel - sorry to have arrived late

We chose this hotel because of its hot stone bath and free shuttle service to/from the airport. Our flight from Naha was delayed while the departure flight was advanced so leaving us very little time to spend in the hotel.
We managed to make our way to the hot stone bath (1700-2200 only) and public bath (up to mid-night) immediately upon arrival, after having briefed clearly and greeted warmly by the very proficient English-speaking lady at reception. The 4/F sea-view twin room was perfect for two people, very large, clean, and has magnificent view of the ocean. We were at the corridor end so it took us a bit more time to go to the lifts.
Most on-site restaurants close early with last order at 9pm. The only place which we managed to get something to eat after 9pm and before 11pm was Cafe Diego, which served mainly drinks but also with a few local dishes.
Breakfast was one of the best in Japan - lots of choices with tasty local flavours. Refills were prompt. The day we visited probably was one of its busiest days. Seats were assigned when full so you don't have to look around and wait behind someone's back.
Shuttle service was efficient too and on time, although I would suggest they seriously consider getting a larger vehicle.
Disappointing

For the price we paid, very disappointing. The bed clothes and bed covers were stained (not badly), the mirrors in the bathroom hadn't been cleaned and the chairs had seen better days. I felt this was probably a fine hotel some years ago when it was most likely better maintained. We changed the first room (2nd floor) to another (3rd floor), which was better but not much.
Upon seeing the first room, I asked to see the manager, and was kept waiting 15 minutes or so because he was busy placating another guest. . .
Compared to resorts in Onna-son or Chatan, where I usually stay, the standard was poor. The staff were friendly and the manager was easy to talk to, but if cleanliness is an issue for you, you would probably be better off staying somewhere else, or perhaps the superior rooms may be better.
I won't be back. There are better, cheaper (non-resort) hotels closer to town. If you want the resort experience in Ishigaki, I would consider ANA or Club med.
Great Spa and hotel is fine

We had a huge room on the ground level. I think I would have preferred to be up a level for a better view. The room had small ants, and perhaps they need to fumigate better. The best experience was the spa. My husband and I had Aya and Ako, and the massages were heavenly. Honestly, one of the best we've had, and we get massages once a month. The restaurant experience could be better, especially if you want to eat healthy. The breakfast buffet, however, was excellent. Staff is courtesy and rates a 5 in our books.
