Good, Could Be Better
Neil Won 13/06/2017 02:25Caves House was obviously in the past a delightful hotel, however it is struggling with modern times and one wonders if financially also. The heating system is basic - it's on hot. No changes possible, so the rooms are very hot, so much so that we slept with no blankets/sheets/doonas (and it's the middle of winter!).
The place certainly has atmosphere but is in need of a little TLC and the house keeping needs a little more attention to detail.
The food in the dinning room was very good, however the menu leads you to believe you need to order veg for the table... so we did... and it arrived as well as veg on the plates! If you need a steak knife, ask, there will not be one brought to you otherwise.
Bar staff were friendly and it was adequately stocked.
Absolutely horrendous
Matt Lon 11/06/2017 13:39Suffocatingly hot. Needs to be experienced to be believed. Absolutely stifling. Apparently a heritage listed heating system that is incapable of running on anything other than blazingly hot, with windows that only open a few inches. Our first room had a sodden carpet; the radiator had burst. We asked to be moved and we were offered an airless sauna of a room, where we spent a substantially sleepless night before moving on. In desperate need of renovation.
A stifling and unpleasant stay
Siew Ching Lon 11/06/2017 13:38We were booked for two nights but after one stifling hot and unpleasant night, we had to leave. This is because the hotel's heating system is kept on the whole day regardless and as we were not able to turn down the heating in our room (the temperature in the room was centrally controlled) and were only able to open our room window to about 4 cm, we were suffocating instead of sleeping last night. The heat would have been alright if it was snowing outside but unfortunately for us it was a very mild night. They did give us some money off when we explained why we were checking out early. It was a shame as I was looking forward to staying two nights there.
An unpretentious and peaceful respite
HMARMACon 11/06/2017 07:12We recently visited Jenolan Caves, to mark our 24th anniversary. We were fortunate to stay in a classic guest room at Caves House, as these are often in high demand. The room was very clean and quaint, and very much added to the ambience of what is a grand old hotel. Yes, the hotel is in need of a lick of paint and a replacement of some well-loved furniture. Notwithstanding, we were after the experience rather than reviewing the star rating of a hotel.
By far the staff were very much the highlight of our stay. Whether it was at reception, the bar or the restaurant, they were, at all times courteous, friendly and always willing to help. The dinner and breakfast food choices represent good honest food, which complements the hotel itself. We were able to take advantage of evening cave tours, and these were great. Returning back to Caves House to find the bar had been kept open for guests to grab a warm drink or nightcap was a lovely touch. Overall we very much enjoyed our stay and will no doubt return.
Atmosphere!
shaz1662on 10/06/2017 03:20We stayed one night only here for a quiet weekend away searching for a wild platypus sighting. Jenolan Caves House is a beautiful place to stay, full of character & atmosphere. Dusk here is magical as the chill sets in & the day visitors leave. Our room was basic but adequate, over-heated though, it got too warm. We ate at Chisolms restaurant & the food was lovely & very reasonably priced. We went on the River Walk & visited the Blue Lake at dawn, dusk & around 9pm which was incredibly peaceful & serene. Alas, no platypus to be seen! Maybe next time!
