We visited the beach resort for new year's eve.. and what a fantastic location admist of the coconut groove and the beach on the other side! Villas are all facing the ocean and its lovely breeze and sound of the waves.. its an amazing experience in total.
One of the best place to spend a holiday. The cottages are very much spacious with a bedroom, drawing cum dining area and an open deck. The view of sea from the bedroom is one to die for. The beach is so clean that someone might wonder whether it is part of India or not. It also has got a good swimming pool. They had also arranged for backwater boat ride and ayurvedic massage. The food options are good but lacks the local cuisine and not much variety.
The place looked exotic, we booked a cottage for two nights. The cottages with two rooms facing the sea are large, but lacking in hotel comforts. The rooms have no cupboard and the adjoining room for luggage had no fan or mirrors. Wonder where one will dress up. The only mirror is in the mosquito infested bathroom, large enough but very dark.
There is a menu card, but most of dishes we zeroed on were not available. The rates included breakfast, but they were really meant for diet.
The beaches are not fit for bathing and there are no life-guards. So there are little activities for my sons. They have a pool, but the water is dirty as there were no filtration. Overall, it pinched in comforts and pleasure for the price we paid.
It was a well-planned break from a busy schedule. Mr. Prakash was available whenever I needed him to get details of the resort before arriving. I got a better deal booking directly with them than through travel sites. We flew from Bangalore to Mangalore and it was a 2-hour drive to Kanan Beach resort. I had pre-booked a cab from Mangalore for our transfer onward and return.
The place is not very populated and there are 2 other resorts in proximity. We could hardly see anything in the night around. We arrived last at night so we took to our beds for a good night’s sleep.
The morning had a pleasant view with garden around and the beach few meters away. It’s best to start any beach activity early in the morning before the sun gets scorching hot. It is peak summer time in April/May. Good part was that the resort’s trees offer shade near the beach area where you can sit, relax and watch the waves hitting the shore. This beach is practically empty except for a couple of people who may wander here from outside in the evenings. If you want to unwind, admire natural beauty, experience calmness, do nothing at all...this is the place to be. The surroundings can revive your spirit and if you like meditation there is no other better place. They also have a watchful guard at the premises to lookout for miscreants.
The cottage was big and had all amenities in place. It has a sitting area with a kitchen slab, though no kitchenettes. All cottages have sea view except that some are closer to the sea than the others. We stayed in room #7 and it was closest to the kitchen and dining area with a complete sea face. If you have babies or small children this can be a convenient option for accessing the kitchen staff whenever you need them. Some trees may restrict a thorough view though. They have brochure for their Ayurveda treatments, outdoor excursions and food menu placed in the cottage. The bed was comfortable, AC worked properly and all electrical points worked fine. The shower had both hot and cold water available throughout the day. There is no television, so come prepared to indulge in a good conversation, walking and feeling the grass, reading a classic or just relaxing. On the underside, an essential item to carry would be mosquito repellent as there are mosquitoes in the room. Keep windows closed in the evening to minimize their entry. Another inconvenience was that the wooden doors were difficult to open and close when we wanted. The walkway in the night gets dark and we had to carefully navigate and access other cottages, reception or kitchen. Lit paths are only restricted to few spots. I highly suggest that common pathways be well-lit to avoid inconvenience to guests. We only got 2 complimentary mineral bottles for 3 occupants. They charge for extra.
The swimming pool provided an enjoyable experience for my kid who loves to play in water. There isn’t a separate children’s area in the pool with shallow depth. You need to accompany them all the time. The water isn’t clear but it looked adequately clean.
The restaurant breakfast (included in room rate) was limited for choice. We did try most of what was offered. The idly and uthappam could have been softer. Feel free to ask them for more options like egg items, fruits, juices etc. They take an advance order for lunch and dinner and this arrangement works well, as you don’t have to wait long at the table. The kitchen staff is accessible from 8am to 10pm and they always gave me milk when I asked for my son. The menu rates are way higher than I expected, for e.g. a bowl of rice cost Rs.200. However the food quality was never compromised.
Our only outdoor venture was visit to the Bekal fort. Transport was arranged by the resort.
I would like to highlight the staff here, as they made our stay pleasant. Overall, it was a short but memorable getaway.
Visited here in April, weather was HOT, but the property is very nice, excellent location right on the beach, very well made rooms. Staff was also friendly ... However we just did NOT enjoy the FOOD. It's as if we were not in India and asked a foreigner to prepare Indian food. Also the variety available for breakfast was as good as nothing. So they lost marks in food, but as a property is was nice.
