What People are saying

Old World Japanese Hotel

Sue Con 03/04/2017 09:25

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. A short walk to see the snow monkeys complete with gumboots provided by the hotel. Fantastic service and a great dining experience. We had an enormous Japanese style room with our own hot bath. Highly recommended.

Excellent service and really nice rooms

Stephen_C_SGon 01/04/2017 05:36

We only managed to stayed one night as it was booked out. Nice onsen, room and food.. There is a cosy coffee lounge (free flow coffee or tea 😁) overlooking a courtyard garden. There is even a heated Swimming pool.

Really nice Onsen - closesr hotel to Snow Monkeys

Timo Ron 29/03/2017 11:03

This place has really nice Onsen and it is also the closest hotel to the Snow Monkey Park - to access the park is it however 1,6 km path (one way) everyone visiting the place have to walk.

The lobby of the hotel looks like people's hall somewhere in China - large and grand in old fashioned way. However the rooms are better than in many other ryokans. The dinner was served on second floor restaurant and was not the finest kaiseki dinner bit at least there was enough of small plates to get even a westerner full.

The best part of the ryokan was the onsen: large indoor pool and very attractive outside pool.

Elegant Japanese Ryokan

Lisa Jon 25/02/2017 01:40

This elegant hotel is a special treat if you want to experience an upmarket, formal traditional onsen hotel. From the moment you step into the expansive foyer overlooking the gardens a sense of calm prevails. Rooms are traditional with tatami mats and futons. Our room had private bathroom. Yukata are provided for guests to wear while at the hotel. The extensive set menu has over 10 courses, offering the chance to sample many traditional and local specialities you might not otherwise order. Fussy eaters might not enjoy this quite so much. Everything is presented with great care and exquisite detail. There are two public onsen baths and two private baths (wood onsen or stone onsen) you can reserve for a small fee of ¥1500 per person for 45 mins. The onsen all have an indoor and outdoor bath in our case we could soak in the hot springs surrounded by snow.
Location is perfect for visiting the snow monkeys. This is the closest hotel to the start of the monkey park trail so no need to organize transfers, just walk on over (and beat the crowds). The hotel has a complimentary shuttle to and from Yudanaka station at set times.

Very pleasant experience

Peter Ton 14/02/2017 22:52

We stayed for one night in between visiting Tokyo and skiing in Hakuba. We had wanted to visit the snow monkey park and also wanted to stay in a ryokan, this provided both for us. Initially we were surprised by the size of the hotel, it was much bigger overall than we had expected, however it was still very quiet for guests and the rooms were large and well apportioned. Dinner was upstairs in their dining room, and it was a wonderful experience. The food was very good (as we came to expect in Japan) and the courses kept coming. My wife and I were quite full afterwards. We also made use of the onsen and swimming pool, the onsen in particular was very nice and it was quiet when we went in to our respective areas. We could have hired the private onsen but didn't feel necessary when I was the only one using the male pool. Breakfast was choice of Japanese and western, we had Japanese which was tasty as well, although there were a few interesting pieces.

It was our first experience of a Japanese traditional hotel / ryokan, and overall a very pleasant one. Staff were very polite, food was good, accommodation and amenities both good and proximity to the monkey park allowed us to get started early the next day before the tourist crush arrived. Would stay again.
