What People are saying

Great introduction to Japan - we'll be back!

Gabbythebookon 09/03/2017 06:45

We (husband and I) stayed here for one week on our first visit to Japan. We chose a Japanese style room and after the tiny hotel room in Tokyo, it seemed huge. There was plenty of room for all of our luggage and ski gear and for relaxing. Our room had one table with two regular chairs as well as a low table with two low chairs.

The single layer of futon was slightly firmer than we were used to so after the first night, we stacked a second one on top for extra cushiness for our ski-tired muscles and that did the trick. The stacked futons combined with pillowy down quilts made for very cosy sleeping.

The gear room downstairs from the foyer has kerosene heaters to dry your boots, gloves and clothes after a day on the slopes. There is a restaurant in the hotel, which has a small but interesting menu and a mostly western-style buffet breakfast is provided between 7 and 9.30 daily. The hotel also has its own Onsen, which we did not use, instead going to the public Onsen next door (is the oldest in the village - 800 years old!). There is also a physiotherapist in the building and daily yoga classes.

Staff spoke excellent English and were very helpful. A variety of leaflets, maps and other information was available at reception. On arrival we were each given a gift of an Onsen bag - a small fabric bag, plastic-lined, containing a small towel and toiletries for use in the Onsen.

Not right in the centre of the village, it is only a few minutes walk to most of the shops, cafes and restaurants however there are a couple even closer - like Akebitai Okonomiyaki next door.

The best way up to the ski slopes is via the Shinyu Pair, about 5 minutes walk (ok, feels closer to 10 if you're wearing ski boots and carrying your heavy fat skis). You don't need a lift pass to get on the Shinyu pair, you can purchase your pass or redeem your voucher once you get to Hikage.

All in all an awesome stay and we'll be back - not just to Nozawa Onsen but to Kawamotoya.

Fantastic Family Stay

We stayed at Kawamotoya over Christmas, New Year 2016 and had a great stay. We were lucky enough to have a room on the 2nd floor that had been completely redecorated for the 2016/17 ski season. Room was western and had very good appliances and amenities, and had a fresh new look. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast each morning, that had a combination of either western or Japanese - we preferred the Japanese, but each to their own!! We had read a number of reviews who had commented on the distance to the ski field. My wife, 14 year old son, and I did not have a problem with this, in fact we found the walk was a good warm up for the legs, gave an opportunity to pick up a coffee on the way, and a street market freshly steamed spicy bun on the way home!! The staff were very helpful with restaurant booking recommendations, and provided good customer service. We had a very good stay and will use Kawamotoya again. Very close to a number of natural onsen - read hot natural spa - and numerous restuarant were within a 5 minute walk.

Good choice for families

Location is down the hill a little but wasn't problem with Travelator taking you up to lifts. Breakfast included was standard western/ japanese buffet but pretty good. Rooms Ryoken style with Tatami mats. Whole family in one room but worked well. Staff were excellent and went out of way to help. I would stay there again.

Nice hotel

Nice Hotel with great staff. Food was delicious. It is a bit of a walk from the town centre especially in deep snow.

Would be nice if the offered a shuttle to the walkway that takes you to the ski area base as it is quite a distance from the hotel.

Not how it used to be

This is my second review for Kawamotoya. We had a great experience when we stayed three years ago and thought we'll come back again. This time round, the rooms are still the same - spacious and comfortable, there's still a relatively good onsen and yukatas (robes) are still provided.

However a few things stood out as different - the daily cleaning of the rooms were really sub-par, sometimes we don't even know if it has been cleaned, until we see the bins have been emptied. The cleaning staff would leave their supplies strewn along the corridors, vacuum cleaner and their cords lying haphazardly around.

The onsen gift bag that was given to us at check in used to have shampoo, shower gel etc so we can go the other onsens outside of the hotel but this time, you only get a tiny bar of hard soap.

The breakfast was the most disappointing. There used to be a good spread of Japanese/Western breakfast options such as grilled fish, onsen eggs, miso, rice along with fruit, salad, yogurt sausages, bread etc, now there's only a small selection of western dishes. We even paid for a good breakfast at a nearby ryokan on the last day because we wanted to leave with a good breakfast.

The ski storage room used to be warmed up daily but now we only had it warmed up once in the week we were there. When we checked out previously, we were sent off with a gift of warm bread for our journey. Not any more. These are rather small things but for the same price we paid (pricey) we kinda expected at least the same service and benefits.
