What People are saying

Very Japanese!!

shostensonon 21/06/2017 22:04

We stayed in a Japanese room - tatami mats and all. Very nice experience. Enjoyed the private hot baths. The crowning glory was the dinner buffet...had not expected such a varied selection of items which were amazingly good. And after that bounteous dinner, another buffet was waiting for us in the morning.
The staff was helpful. Only downside was that the bath in our room was small.

Nice Onsen hotel

heundon 27/04/2017 20:04

While unassuming on the outside, this large hotel in small town full of similar hotels was very nice inside, and our room was great -- while most were tatami mat style, we requested and received a western style room with beds (perhaps a bit too firm for us). Lovely stream ran by hotel on our side - no nearby convenience stores or restaurants. Room had tv (no English channels), frig, water heater, and free wifi (we had no problem with wifi despite what other reviewers have said). Very quiet room - no traffic noise nor any from adjacent rooms. Had terrific dinner buffet - many selections, both Japanese and western - incl sushi, sashimi, and pizza, and desserts galore. Breakfast buffet OK - mix of Japanese and western items. Almost all literature in hotel in Japanese; staff very service friendly.

Onsen Hotel at a remote location

Walter Son 10/12/2016 22:45

To tell the pros fist: The Hotel rooms are nicely decorated in a western/japanese style. The meals are offered as a comprehensive buffet. The staff is friendly and very helpful.
There are 2 onsen locations separated for female and male.
And the cons: The location of the hotel is somehow remote in an unspecatacular environment. Hotel and rooms are face to the main road and the rail which can be noisy at times. The buffet has a touch of mass production. The onsen can be crowded depending on the occupancy of the hotel.

The travel time from Kinugawa Onsen to Nikko by train takes 45 Minutes plus additionally 15 Minutes walking to the station (or 5 Minutes by shuttle).

Resort style ryokan

nuhkolon 16/11/2016 12:33

Huge hotel in a small town. Great for family with decent buffet with a wide variety of Japanese food. Nice little touches - had little tables for stamps for kids and Halloween costumes to dress up in. There was also a short one man variety show in the evening for the kids to enjoy. View to the river was beautiful but not spectacular (make sure to book facing river).

Otherwise, the onsen was ok.

To note:
Rooms are tired, in need of update.
In kinugawa, which is 4 train stops from Nikko (free pass doesn't include bus to hotel). That was ok, because our main destination was deplane for the kids.

Good Value Ryokan Style Hotel!

Overall I would say the stay was better than I expected. Although the condition of the room is probably more like 2 or 3 stars, but it was clean which was important. The public areas are nice and comfortable enough. The Wi-Fi works at the lobby but not in the room. I traveled with 2 teens. We stayed in the large Japanese Style room for 4 people and chose the breakfast and dinner option. I would recommend everyone to purchase the breakfast and dinner buffet with the room. The quality and selection were pretty good with both Japanese and Western menu, also there is really nothing to eat around the hotel! The local shops are almost non-existence! The Onsen was large and clean. There was an etiquette poster in the front with the explanation in English, other than that you just had to follow other people what to do. The price is on the expensive side for the room (consider it was older and dated) but that goes for everything in Japan. Most guests were Japanese, so don't expect the staff to be very proficient in English. Just beware that if you want to stay in Nikko this hotel is about 30 minutes train ride from Nikko and about 15 minutes walk from Kinugawa Koen Station. We didn't find that it is too inconvenient to come from Nikko. Overall, we had a pleasant stay and would recommend it for anyone looking for Japanese style Onsen accommodation near Nikko.
