Enjoyed my stay. Beautiful view and enjoyed the Takigyo ceremony

inottawa355on 03/05/2017 03:26

Stayed for one night to try the Takigyo ceremony. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. They provided a sheet with information about the Takigyo ceremony in English during the dinner the night before with an explanation on the time and what to bring. The view was beautiful and the weather cooperated. The room was a traditional Japanese style with futon, small table with warmer, and small typical gas heater.
After the Takigyo ceremony, there was a short ceremony in the temple area of the property (after walking back from the waterfall) followed by breakfast. I enjoyed participating fully in the Takigyo ceremony, as the words were also written in Japanese and in the alphabet. I hope to do it again someday.
Please keep in mind it is not a resort hotel, but a typical Japanese style accommodations, where you get to experience some of the Japanese culture, quietness of the mountain and gentle singing of the many bird species that are abundant in the area.

Beautiful, serene, and inspiring

If you are interested in experiencing the Shinto architecture or culture, I could not recommend this place more. The architecture of the lodge is in a traditional Japanese style (it's a bit cold, so bring a warm sweater if you're not here in the summer). The view from our room looked out across the mountains all the way out towards Tokyo. The food was fresh and delicious.
I went to because I wanted to experience the practice of Takigyo and was glad I tried it, although I must warn you it was cold enough to knock the wind out of me.

I highly recommend this place. Especially the Takigyo.

Great getaway from Tokyo

We had a very memorable stay at Komadori Sanso. Our hostesses were amazing, they really made us feel at home. Food was excellent, very well prepared and perfect presentation. Very clean accommodation. Perfect getaway from the city.

Probably the best thing I've ever done!

Stayed here a number of years ago actually whilst on a solo trip around Japan. It takes effort to get to this hidden gem but it is truly wondrous!
You will stay in the lodging of the shinto priest there and if you choose, which you definitely should, you can take part in the religious ceremony at the waterfall.
He is one of the loveliest people i have met and his wife who runs the lodgings is equally lovely.
You get to have true onsen bath there and the food is unbelievable!

ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE - 5 STARS - Recommend to anyone looking at all the options on Mount Mitake

AAK_theTravelleron 30/05/2016 02:16

Based on reading many many reviews on Trip Advisor about places to stay on Mount Mitake, I decided to book KomadoriSanso during the Shinto festival of Hindode for myself and two friends, all three in our late twenties. From start to finish it was an epic experience! We can't thank Yoshihiko Baba, and his lovely wife and daughter enough for their exceptional hospitality! Five stars on every front.

Getting there: We came from Tokyo (trains, then a bus, then the fenicular) and arrived in the late afternoon. The trip took around 2 hours and was relatively easy. From the station where the fenicular disembarks, the walk to Komadori Sanso is really quite easy and only took us about 15-20 minutes through gorgeous forrest and mountain scenery and past a number of other houses and inns. All in all, it's a straightforward journey if you plan ahead and a beautiful one. (note - there are shops at the fenicular station and vending machines throughout the mountain area as well as a little shopping street next to the shrine).

Komadori Sanso: When we arrived at the Shukubo Komadori Sanso, my name was written on a sign at the front gate and we were greeted at the door by the manager's wife and daughter, who are both extremely lovely and speak quite good English. They checked us in and then we went up to our room before dinner.

- The Room: Our room was a beautiful traditional Ryokan style room, with a tatami mat floor, a tea table and floor cushions, a safe, an electric teapot, a wardrobe, chairs to sit next to the window, and a sensational view of the mountains! We were up a little staircase and the room sat alone. It was plenty of room for three adults! Three individual restrooms and a double sink were in the hallway next to our room and we weren't sharing them with any other rooms. Kimonos were provided to wear in the room and at each entrance there are slippers (you leave your shoes at the entrance to the Shukubo, and then there are different slippers for outdoors, hallways, and bathrooms - no shoes should be worn on tatami mats). We also got a toothbrush at the sink so no need to bring one and there was green tea and cookies on the table.

- The beds: The beds are traditional style on the floor and really very comfortable. Traditional style mattresses with comfy duvets and firm pillows. We slept soundly in the peaceful quiet of the mountains.

- The Food: We paid for the dinner and breakfast and it was worth every penny. Unlike another Shikubo I stayed in, the meals were not served in the room, but instead in a dining room downstairs with basic tables and chairs on the ground floor. Dinner was a delicious traditional Japanese meal, with , among other things, fish, local vegetables, green tea, miso soup, rice, and a little pot of creamy soup with vegetables, mushrooms, and meat. You could also order Sake, which we did and we toasted KAMPAI with some other guests that were there for the festival. For breakfast we had the choice of Western or Japanese breakfast and chose the Japanese option. It was rice, miso soup, vegetables, eggs, fruit, yogurt, fish, bacon, coffee, etc. All the food was delicious!!!

- Showers/Onsen: There are normal showers on the first floor, but I didn't use them. Instead we opted for the Onsen - traditional Japanese baths. These are gender separated. You strip down, clean yourself thoroughly at the little shower stations, then get into the wooden onsen bath (like a hot tub, but everyone is naked, and you sit quietly, soaking away stress). There is soap, towels, shampoo and conditioner provided, and I think a hairdryer, with mirrors, sinks, baskets to leave your clothes in, and one toilet stall.

Our experience was all round excellent. The views from every window and outside are sensational, overlooking the mountains. The staff were all extremely nice, spoke relatively good English, and Yoshihiko Baba went above and beyond to make sure our trip was a great one, emailing me weeks before we arrived to sort out all the details. He even arranged for us to take part in the Shinto Hinode Festival, at the temple on the night of the 7th which ended in a procession down to the community center and a traditional Shinto ceremony. Then the next morning he and his sons dressed us in Samurai Armour and we paraded with other locals down to a ceremony at the fenicular station and then back up the mountain, where the paths were lined with people that had come to Mount Mitake to see the procession, and up to the temple.

It was a sensational, once in a life time experience and staying in Komadori Sanso is something I highly recommend to anyone visiting Japan!
